    1199 SUPERLEGGER

The 1199 Superleggera is the rea dream shared by many of Ducpassionate employees - to offediscerning enthusiasts a motobreaks previous barriers of lighperformance, and is state-of-thevery detail. The result is clear: this incrediblcle has over 200 horsepower in gated version (including everyth

to ride on the street, such as mirlight, catalytic converter and licholder), and weighs only 166 kgride without fuel, which is prasame as a WSBK lining up on tgrid of a race. The 1199 Superthe best power-to-weight ratio mologated bike by a large marabsolute work of art, and a limof just 500 units. To offer an insmethods used to achieve its unplight weight, I give you a figure almost trivial: 9 grams. This is tion in weight that was achieved ing the radiator cap in aluminium steel (its usual material). By pation to this detail, we obtained a 3reduction for this single componwas in precisely this way, by anacomponent and asking ourselvminimize its weight and maximizemance, that we created the 1199gera. From this process emergtional components such as its mmonocoque frame, carbon rear sutanium fasteners, two-ring race pmany other details. As a final this bikes special nature Id like another wonderful detail that is lit features anti-wheelie control, be adjusted on-the-fly to maximeration - a feature which will be mon the track, obviously!

    99 SUPERLEGGERAE PROJECT

1199 Superleggera was born to be Ducatisological flagship, representing the maximumssion of lightness and performance from the Borgoale-based manufacturer. There are numerous,

ficant innovations on this new single-seat version, ned to be appreciated by enthusiasts, especiallyg use on track. Starting with the layout of the 1199ale, Ducatis designers and engineers got to workwo simple, but far from banal, objectives: to reduceeight (of what was already the lightest productionrbike in the world) and increase performance.

rst component on which they worked is one of thepillars, along with the Superquadro engine, of theale project: the monocoque frame. Redesignedand-cast in magnesium alloy, it weighs only 3 kg,is a 1.1 kg savings from the Panigales aluminium

    n. This weight savings was achieved withoutg the rigidity or strength of the frame. Another

important contribution to the lightness of the bike derivesfrom the carbon rear frame, redesigned from scratch andweighing in at just 800 grams, compared to the 2.1 kg ofthe other versions. Also extremely important in this weightreduction process is the role played the Marchesinimagnesium alloy forged wheels. The 1 kg weight savings(total) of the wheels is especially important, and greatlyenhances the dynamic qualities and manageabilityof the 1199 Superleggera in braking, handling, andacceleration. Extensive use of carbon fibre for the sidefairings, front cowl, tail, and other details also allowedfor a further weight reduction of about 1 kg while, moreimportantly, the entire exhaust system was redesignedto cope with the advanced engine performance and takeoff further weight thanks to the use of titanium in boththe mufflers and manifolds (-2.6 kg compared to thesteel system). Finally the suspension: Ohlins of course, featuring an FL916 fork with fully machined bottoms,Titanium Nitride coating, and stress-optimized outer

tubes that are asymmetrically lightened to maintainrigidity during braking. Rear damping is provided by afully-adjustable TTX36 shock with a titanium spring.

Nothing has been left to chance. The 1199 Superleggerauses a lithium-ion battery 2 kg lighter than the standardone, titanium alloy for various components, a BremboMCS (multiple click system) adjustable brake mastercylinder with remote lever adjuster, a hard-anodizedErgal rear sprocket, a MotoGP-derived chain, ahigh-performance air filter, a carbon seat base, andmachined-from-billet footpegs and top triple clamp.

The electronic equipment is enriched by the DWC(Ducati Wheelie Control) system, based on an inertialplatform with electronic gyroscopes that provide theparameters to the ECU, with 8 settings. Furthermore, through two dedicated buttons mounted on theleft handlebar its possible to modify the level of

intervention of several different parameterDWC, DTC and EBC, while riding. Anothefeature of this very exclusive Ducati, cfurther to its identity as the closest streetbcompeting in the Superbike Championshipwhich automatically calibrates the electrosystems and final transmission ratio, to adrolling circumferences of different tyres. DDA+ system (Ducati Data Analysis), that to acquire and download data regardingfunctional parameters of the bike, is now enlean angle acquisition.

The bike is completed with a host of detaia titanium racing exhaust which increasespower by 5hp, a larger windscreen, fronpaddock stands, a bike cover, and kits to mirrors, license plate holder, and sidestand.A fan would have trouble dreaming of anyth

L THE SECRETS OF THE NEW ENGINE OF THE 1199PERLEGGERA, MAXIMUM EXPRESSION IN TERMSPERFORMANCE DERIVED FROM THE SUPERQUADRO,RGO PANIGALES LEGENDARY TWIN-CYLINDER

Another innovation is the use of tungsten inserts tobalance the crankshaft. Tungsten is a material withgreater density than steel, about 18 gr/dm3 versus

7.85 gr/7dm3, that allows for the concentration ofsignificant mass in a small space, better balancingthe alternating masses of the rod and piston andallowing the engine to be lighter and accelerate morequickly. The use of tungsten has allowed us to reducethe weight of the crankshaft by about 400 gr. Theengine also uses titanium exhaust valves (in additionto its titanium intake valves), further reducing weightand inertia to benefit its eagerness in making power. The combination of all these modifications bringsthe maximum power to more than 200 hp and resultsin a higher power and torque curve at all speeds. Weadd to this a new sensor, derived exclusively fromSuperbike and applied to the Quick Shift gearbox, which serves to determine the position of the drumand makes for a quicker gear change.

This Quick Shift means that the rider barely ever hasto come off the throttle (the system acts on ignitionand injection), and the sensor controls the positionof the gears to reapply torque when the gear iseffectively engaged. All of this reinforces the pureand focused spirit of the 1199 Superleggera, whichis essentially a World Superbike with a license plate.

The new engine is lighter, with less inertia and friction

and the ability to rev to higher speeds.

ngine of the 1199 Superleggera is der ived fromf the 1199 Panigale, the now famous L-shapedcylinder Superquadro with 112x60.8 mm of

and stroke, with solutions that descend directlyDucati Corses experience on track. The

ple areas of evolution regard the heart of thee itself: or, above all, the use of a piston withssive geometry that modifies the combustionber, raising compression from 12.5:1 (as on thePanigale) up to 13.2:1.

her innovation derived from Superbike is thef a two ring piston instead of the usual three.

main advantage is the weight reduction, whichs down by 10-15% from the approx. 600 gr ofriginal piston on the 1199 Panigale explainsnzo De Silvio, Engine Design Manager. The

nd advantage is the reduction in friction as wellcourse, less inertia that allows the engine to

    erate more quickly.

E INGREDIENTS OF LIGHTNESS? THE REDUCTIONNUMBER OF COMPONENTS, THE INTEGRATIONFUNCTIONS AND THE OPTIMISATION OF SHAPES

199 Superleggera was born to be the closestbike, in terms of weight and power, to the bikeseting in the Superbike World Championship:

kg in its riding configuration without fuel andthan 200 hp.

s project the intense research into lightnessevery single component of the bike intoderation and also led the complete redesignme key elements of its suspension set-up: thecoque frame is one such stand-out.

dea of a monocoque frame - explains Simoneazza, R&D Vehicle Design Manager was borncati Corse and they patented the concept;ally it was produced in carbon and mountede MotoGP bike. The innovation of this concept

of frame lies in its ability to integrate numerousfunctions, something that inevitably led to a significantreduction in weight. The frame is fixed directly tothe two cylinder heads and also acts as an airbox, housing the throttle bodies and air filter; this allowsus to have a narrower front section, advantageousin terms of aerodynamics. It integrates perfectly withthe other components of the bike including the frontair filter and the engine, ensuring better closure of theairbox. It also guarantees the possibility of regulatingthe steering head angle, a vital element to indulge theneeds of more expert riders, derived directly from ourexperience in the Superbike Championship.

The 1199 Panigale is equipped with an industrialisedversion of the original monocoque frame, producedin aluminium alloy using the shell fusion process.

With the 1199 Superleggera we needed to takeanother step forward in terms of lightness and thisis why we turned to a light and strong material likemagnesium. This is a unique application among productionmotorcycles in all the world. With a careful redesign of the frames lines, wall thicknesses and its internal bracing usingsophisticated techniques of finite element analysis,we were able to achieve the extraordinary result ofa 25% weight reduction compared to the aluminiumversion; it went from 4.1 to just 3 kg, while itscharacteristics of rigidity and strength, necessaryfor a machine with such extreme performance asthe 1199 Superleggera, remain unaltered.Another design difficulty was having to retain theinterfaces with those components adjacent tothe frame. Due to the particular characteristics

of magnesium, we had to carefully evgalvanic compatibility of the various maas a result, redesign all the connection the components that are attached to the

Finally, in order to produce such a complex we had to combine thorough knowledge ofand its final use, one of Ducatis areas of exthe specific product and production knowworlds best specialist suppliers, who havbecome Ducatis partners in co-design.

    TORY OF THE COMPANY

Ducati has had a long life.Founded in 1926 to manufacture

electro-mechanical products, fromradios to razors, only after the SecondWorld War did it begin to manufacturemotorbikes. Initially it made mopeds, with the famous Cucciolo, thengradually began to produce bikeswith small cc engines, eventuallyleading up to the maxi twin cylindersof the 70s. But its over the last thirtyyears that Ducati has become a trueprotagonist in the sports bike sectorand in competition.

Claudio Domenicali, Ducatis CEO,has experienced this all from theinside. We asked him to run throughthis incredible history made up of

passion, technology and design. And he, a keen motorcyclist, tells itthrough the story of Borgo PanigalesSuperbikes.I think that history can teach ussomething for the future, beginsDomenicali. To remind us of thosestrong values that make Ducatiinimitable, and to provide an idea ofwhich direction to take.

At the beginning of the 80s Ducatihad become a state-owned company. It was part of the IRI (Institute forIndustrial Reconstruction, a publicbody) and its owners certainly hadno great passion for bikes. Luckily,in 1983 continues Domenicali,Ducati was acquired by Claudio and

However, thesuccesses achieved in SBK and thegreat reception for Ducati brandedproduction bikes were unable toprevent a new crisis, caused by thenot so careful management of thecompany by the Cagiva Group. In September 1996 they were forcedto hand over ownership of Ducati tothe American investment fund, TexasPacific Group.

The new management initiatedsome serious commercial andmarketing changes: Ducati beganto be transformed from a purelymanufacturing company, to a Brandtouching many aspects of themotorcycling world. These were the years of the first WorldDucati Week that saw the communityof Ducatisti meet up for the first timeat Misano. They were also the years of corporatefinance, with Ducatis listing onthe Stock Exchange in 1999; andof maximum production capacity, with more than 40 thousand bikesmanufactured in 2000. Very intenseyears, also in racing. Ducati won11 SBK world titles (including TroyBaylisss triple in the World Superbike

In 2006, the Italian groupInvestindustrial became Ducatismajority shareholder and in 2007the 1098 was born. It took the placeof the 999, and was quickly votedBest Design and Best SupersportBike from the Motorcycle DesignAssociation. E NEW MONSTER

u see it from a distance, maybeven just a glance, but you haveoubt, its a Monster! As youcloser you start to notice thatthing important has changed:more imposing, bigger, moressive than its predecessor, butains that family feel which these

finally, you see it up close but,h its unmistakably a Monster, ared to the models you arear with everything is new rightto the last bolt. If you then have

ortable and ergonomic, and thata wide handlebar that enableshtly forward-leaning set-up toat wind resistance when riding.

ever, it is in technical terms thatMonster is really completelyand different. For the first timeopts the solution of a load-ng engine connected to the front

and rear subframe, which is aept that was first introduced onop-of-the-range 1199 Panigale.s case, however, in place of the

aluminium casting the classic Ducatitrellis frame has been used, albeitshorter, lighter and much more rigidthan that used previously. The brakingsystem has also been borrowedfrom the Panigale, and is certainlythe highest performing and mostadvanced system currently available.

The engine is also new: it is derivedfrom that of the Multistrada 1200 ofwhich it maintains the engine size, but it has been significantly revisedin order to provide a perfect fit forthis new model: the cylinder headshave been redesigned to enable thesolution of the load-bearing engineto be adopted, but also the powerand torque have been optimisedby changing the compression ratio, using new exhaust pipes, new intakemanifolds and throttle bodies, andremapping the control units whichmanage the engine and the variousriding modes available.

The result is a bike which exaggeratesand unites opposing elements:boasting an extra 100cc and 45 hpcompared to the 1100 EVO which itreplaces, and consequently higherperformance, while at the same timebeing a more comfortable and easierride for the city.

This category is that of the nakeds,of which the Monster has been thesymbol and reference point for over20 years (and still is today). INTERVIEW WITHANDREA FERRARESI

The question that everyone always asks:how does a new bike come into being?

How do you go from the initial drawings tothe final model? What are the steps whichlead to the definition of the overall style andthe details? Andrea Ferraresi, Head of theDucati Design Center, tells us how theywork in Borgo Panigale.

Question: when we think of a creative

process, we imagine the designer as the

freest man in the world, a sheet of paper

in hand, a pencil and lots of ideas. In

reality, we too have restrictions, certain

limits that must be taken into account

and used as a starting point...

Answer: Compared to other products, wehave a much freer hand. However, we toohave some restrictions. The main ones fora designer are that on a bike everythingis in plain sight, you cant hide anything, that everything is there in order to workwell and, on a Ducati, everything must belightweight. That is quite a challenge, butin some ways it is also one of the mostfascinating aspects of our work. The most intriguing challenge: you can dealwith everything.

We say that designers go jus

    engineers let them.

A.: In reality the bike really itogether with the technical sguarantee you that as an emight be difficult to believe, bfirst sketches, jotted down hereare the result of a lot of pre-stbetween the designer and the e

And size? How does that co m

    search for style?

A.:Designing small, compact, and attractive bikes is a chais relatively easy (if I can that). What is more compensuring the products have Das well as offering comfort and euse as key selling points. The n1200 is a very successful expthis sense.

DUCATI PANIGALE BEST OF THE BESTHE 2013 PRODUCT DESIGN CATEGO

we summarise the stages in the

ion and birth of a Ducati?

he starting-point is what we call theuct Mini Brief, which sets out a designand from here the creative processegin. Starting from a rough layout in

h there are few basic parameters (axleng, seat height, handlebar position,we start a kind of competition amongams designers usually three of themnd up with three draft proposals. Wese two of them and from these, afterng onto the virtual stage, we mill twols on a 1:1 scale. They are to all effectsurposes 3D sketches. On the basis of, we make the final choice of the mostncing proposal.

e is also competition in design

es, the winning proposal is virtuallydelled and milled, again on a 1:1 in clay. The manual modelling, whichne with the help of highly qualifiedssionals real sculptors is the mostrtant stage for a designer, since it isf creating the surfaces.more than in other stages in the

ss, there is physical contact with thethat is being created. At the end oftage, and after formal approval of thewe then reverse engineer the modelhere are two other approval stages:technical, in the Design Center inof the Master Model, and a final onee the company management, with theModel.

And it no longer has that brownish look

    like plasticine?

A.: No, it must look like a real bike. So theMaster Model is painted in the colours whichhave been chosen previously, in order toachieve the most realistic result possible. Some elements may already exist, if theyare available or used on other bikes. Forexample the engine, suspension, wheels.

Then its the turn of the technical office?

A.: Absolutely not! If the technical officeonly got started now that would be a majorproblem! Remember what I said earlier:the interaction between the Design Centerand the Technical Office starts right fromthe earliest conceptual stages. The MasterModel already represents the engineeredversion of the product. There would beno point with us all being happy with thestyle aspects if the bike then cannot bemanufactured and does not guaranteethe necessary performance, in the senseof global performance. Returning to theprocess, if the key players are convinced,we finally move on to the refinement stage,in which we make the choice of materials, colours, and surface treatments.

And for you the work starts a gain.

A.:In reality we work on parallel projects, some are just getting off the ground, othersare at the midway point, and others arecoming to an end. You never have time tocatch your breath and take a break. Thatslife I guess, its certainly ours.

SAFETY ISGUARANTEED BY ABSAND DTC, COMBINED

IN THE DUCATI SAFETYPACK WITH THREEAVAILABLE RIDING

    MODES: SPORT,TOURING AND URBAN

In fact for the Hyperstrada, the 2-valve configuration andair-cooling have been abandoned for the engine, in orderto adopt a new 4-valve per cylinder liquid-cooled system, characterised by a racing cylinder bore of 88 mm x 67.5mm and designed to obtain a perfect balance betweenuse and performance: it is the new 821 cc 11 Testastrettaengine which supplies maximum power of 110 hp @ 9,250rpm and torque of 89 Nm @ 7,500 rpm.

The new 11 Testastretta adopts the most advancedtechnical solutions, the result of Ducatis engineeringknow-how, solutions which have led to the creation of anextremely high performance engine that is also fluid andregular and can be enjoyed in all conditions, and that can, among other things, greatly limit the emissions of unburnthydrocarbons.

As a result, the new Hyperstrada range stand s out in termsof its proportions, ergonomics and practicality, as well asfor the application of the latest Ducati technology. And so,if the Hypermotard and Hypermotard SP versions faithfullyrecreate a Supermotards sprit and bare appearance, theHyperstrada model seems less extreme, with specificcharacteristics which make it fit for more varied use, including touring.

The night in its deafening silence envelops the city.

Boulevards and buildings are as if covered by a black veil.

Somewhere, a rider prepares to take to the streets.

His is not just any mount; it is the Diavel Carbon, a powerful and

elegant beast whose dominant nature is apparent simply from

its appearance. Wide shoulders, broadened by the lateral

radiators, narrow to a tapered waist that draws the eye to the

engine at its heart. Together with a bright red trellis frame

and lightweight forged Marchesini wheels, this unmistakably

communicates the performance within. The imposing and

dynamic rear tyre encourages lean angles of up to 41 degrees,

while a substantial headlight illuminates even the darkest night.

Uniquely for a Ducati, the overall look is not one derived from

competition but rather is solely to arouse the desire of riders

who demand power and sophistication, together with brutal

    street style.

e: the 1198cc, 162 hp Testastretta 11 engine lets loose

    eep, aggressive rumble.

e Diavel Carbon manages its powe r with 3 different Riding

de maps, making it as tame or fierce as the rider desires.

ban mode is the most reserved, with 100 hp controlled by

C (Ducati Traction Control) on level 5, the highest setting.

s is the mode used when a rider wants the Diavel at

most tame, for instance when the pavement is wet.

If he desires the next level of performance, the Touring

mode gives the bike its full 162 hp, but with a softened

power delivery that still keeps something in reserve.

And for the fierce unadulterated Diavel experience, there

is Sport mode, which unleashes all its performance in the

most aggressive way - creating scorching acceleration

and a sense of inexhaustible power so addicting that when

the dawn finally breaks, the only desire will be for the next

    night to fall.

The Great Ocean Road is perhaps one of the most famousroads in the world purpose-built for touring. Even thoughit is heavily publicized and known it still remains relativelydevoid of too much traffic on weekdays.

The road has lush green forests, spectacular cliffs, amazingrock formations and coastal scenery. Approximately 245km long, it stretches between the Victorian towns ofTorquay and Warnambool. In fact this road is the worldslargest war memorial, dedicated to the casualties of WorldWar I. Unlike some overhyped places around the world, this road actually is great to ride on at least once, if youare in Australia. Just try and pick a weekday with blueskies. Surprisingly you can find some isolated beacheseven on this road if you are ready to trek a little bit.

Mission Complete: From the time we are born to ourdeath - everything is measured in numbers. These tendigits represent everything in this universe continuum.

And sometimes, when the stars align, you come acrossa magical constellation of numbers which is otherwise arare, probably once in a lifetime occurrence and needsmeticulous planning, dedication and will to make possible, let alone to replicate.

As a motorcyclist I have been fortunate to create mile-by-mile one of these very special nexuses of numbers, while surging forward with my bike as a single entity bothphysically and mentally. Each mile covered has taught me something, given mequality meditation time, allowed me to listen to the pitter-patter of the rain over my helmet, introduced me to peoplewho might be my friends for life, taken me to sights noother medium could, given my lens views I could capturenowhere else and last but not least, tangibly defined thisroadtrip - a special sequence of events, numbers andplanned serendipity. 23.456 km done on The GrandAustralian Roadtrip!
