(*) INVOCATION, CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION (Please stand.) P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and

cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination. P: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have

sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

P: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives

you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen. (*) HYMN OF PRAISE (LSB 735, st. 1) Have no fear little flock; have no fear, little flock, For the Father has chosen to give you the Kingdom Have no fear, little flock! (*) SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray.

O Lord, the stronghold of our lives, in the midst of our waiting fill us with hope and confidence in you, in Jesus’ name we pray,

C: Amen. (Please be seated.) ANTHEM (8:00 am) “The Lord Is My Light” – Kayla Finley (You may follow along on LSB 723.)

SCRIPTURE READINGS L: The Old Testament Reading for the Fourteenth Sunday After Pentecost is from Psalm 27

1 The Lord is my light and my salvation — whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid? 2 When the wicked advance against me to devour me, it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall. 3 Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident.

4 One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.

5 For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock. 6 Then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround me; at his sacred tent I will sacrifice with shouts of joy; I will sing and make music to the Lord.

7 Hear my voice when I call, Lord; be merciful to me and answer me. 8 My heart says of you, "Seek his face!" Your face, Lord, I will seek. 9 Do not hide your face from me, do not turn your servant away in anger; you have been my helper. Do not reject me or forsake me, God my Savior. 10 Though my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will receive me.

11 Teach me your way, Lord; lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors. 12 Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes, for false witnesses rise up against me, spouting malicious accusations.

13 I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. 14 Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord. Psalm 27 NIV L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. L: The Epistle is from the twelfth chapter of Hebrews.

4 In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 5 And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says, "My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, 6 because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son."

7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? 8 If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline —then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. 9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! 10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

12 Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. Hebrews 12:4-12 NIV

L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. (Please stand to sing.) (*) RESPONSE

(*) HOLY GOSPEL P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the thirteenth chapter.

22 Then Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as he made his way to Jerusalem. 23 Someone asked him, "Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?" He said to them, 24 "Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to. 25 Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading, 'Sir, open the door for us. ' "But he will answer, 'I don't know you or where you come from. ' 26 "Then you will say, 'We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets. ' 27 "But he will reply, 'I don't know you or where you come from. Away from me, all you evildoers! '

28 "There will be weeping there, and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves thrown out. 29 People will come from east and west and north and south, and will take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God. 30 Indeed there are those who are last who will be first, and first who will be last." Luke 13:22-30 NIV P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

(*) APOSTLES' CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. (Please be seated.)

P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise. P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks

to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by His glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing:

(*) SANCTUS

(*) THE WORDS OF OUR LORD Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had

given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

(*) PAX DOMINI P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

Stephen Ministry STEPHEN MINISTERS ARE CARE GIVERS Everyone goes through difficult times. Having someone to care, to listen, to share God’s love with you, can help you get through the confusion, the stress, or loneliness you may be experiencing. Stephen Ministry is grounded in Jesus’ command to love one

another. Through one-to-one caring relationships, those who are hurting receive the love and care they need to support them. For more information about the Stephen Ministry program, here at Redeemer, or to learn how you can have a Stephen Minister walk with you during a challenging time, please contact Pastor Adam Koglin, (507) 289-5147.

Be sure to check out the “Call Groups” tab on the Redeemer website (www.redeemer-rochester.com) for the most up-to-date information on the Call Process.

UPDATES FROM THE FOUNDATION TEAM CALL COMMITTEE The Call Committee completed phone interviews with our six "semi-finalists" on August 15 and 16. We were blessed that all six candidates were able to meet with us at the scheduled time. The committee will now assess the information we have received from these candidates and narrow the list to the "finalists." They will then be invited to Redeemer for an on-site interview to meet with the staff and other church leaders. Once the on-site interviews and background checks are complete, a date for a Voters’ meeting will be set. The voters will then select the candidate to whom the call from Redeemer will be extended. As a reminder, the members of Redeemer are invited to express any objections or concerns to any member of the call committee. The six pastors once again are: Pastor Mark Dahn: Associate Pastor, Trinity Lutheran Church Tyler, TX. Pastor David Hormann: Most recently Executive Director of Missions and Ministry Cordova, TN Pastor Kurt Klaus: Senior Pastor, Messiah Lutheran Church, Mounds View, MN Pastor Adam Koglin: Associate Pastor, Redeemer Lutheran Church Rochester, MN Pastor Brent Parrish: Senior Pastor, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Prior Lake, MN Pastor David Seabaugh: Senior Pastor, Bethel Lutheran Church, St. Paul, MN

PRAYER TEAM Excitement is building . . . we have six names for consideration and ask that all members of

Redeemer pray specifically for these men as they discern God's will for their lives. Pray that as the Holy Spirit guides the Call Committee, they will clearly discern the

candidates we are to invite for interviews. Continue to pray for patience for members during this lengthy process with confidence that

God will reveal His choice for us in His time . . . to Him be the glory!!

LIFE QUOTES “A Christian father will also serve as spiritual priest of the family. As such he is to nourish the souls of the children, teaching them about the Lord, His will for their lives, and about His loving, gracious, and merciful way.” Rev. Mark Gullerud, pastor at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Bowdle, South Dakota.

WELCOME VISITORS Whether looking for a church home or just here for the day, we are glad to have you as our guests. Please sign the red Friendship Registration pad in your pew and pick up a visitor packet in the Narthex. Remember that you are our guests; the offering is for our members who support the work of the church through their voluntary gifts.

WORSHIP SCHEDULE Thursday 6:00 pm Saturday 5:30 pm Sunday 8 and 9:30 am HOLY COMMUNION is celebrated in each service the weekends of the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sundays of the

month. We invite those who acknowledge their sinfulness, recognize that Christ’s body and blood are truly present for our forgiveness, and are willing to give witness to the unity of their faith with this community, to join with us in receiving the sacrament. For those who for health or conscience reasons are not able to receive wine, please note that there is a cup of white grape juice in the middle of each tray. Gluten-free wafers are available in the middle of the bread tray for those with that allergy.

CHILDREN are always welcome at Redeemer. Parents should note that according to your needs and preferences, 1) children’s bulletins and “color bags” are available in the narthex; 2) our nursery is staffed each Sunday morning during the 9:20 am Education Hour and the 10:40 am service. The Nursery is located just off the Narthex -- look for our sign!

WORSHIP TAPES are available in the rack by the elevator. Listen and bring it back or contribute one dollar if you wish to keep the tape.

TRANSPORTATION is available each Sunday morning. Please call the church office (289-5147) by Noon on Thursday.

SPECIAL NEEDS Large print bulletins and personal hearing devices are available in the Narthex from an Usher or at the Welcome Center.
