VISITORS : We welcome you in the name of our Lord Jesus to our Father’s house. We’re glad that you are with us today and pray that you find comfort and peace in the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.

AS WE GATHER : Lighting the candles marks a time for prayer as we prepare to receive the blessings of our Lord. Please respect the prayers of others by praying quietly. In the same respect, please refrain from leaving the sanctuary during the Divine Service until after our Lord gives His benediction.

A WORD ON THE ORDER OF SERVICE : If you find yourself a bit lost, take heart! We were all there once. Listen to and watch those around you and learn from them how the Church worships God.

NB: Italicized words or phrases indicate an appropriate time to bow one’s head, such as at the Holy Name of Jesus. The (T) marks an appropriate time to make the sign of the Holy Cross. The symbol () marks a scriptural and theological explanation of that part of the liturgy.

A prayer before worship: O Lord, Creator, Redeemer, and Comforter, as I come to worship You in spirit and in truth, I humbly pray that You would open my ears to the preaching of Your Holy Word so that I may repent of my sins, believe in Jesus Christ as my only Savior, and grow in grace and holiness. Hear me for the sake of His name. Amen.

For more prayers during the Service see the inside cover of the Lutheran Service Book, or pages 305-318.

P Almighty God, our maker and redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto You that we are by nature sinful and unclean and that we have sinned against You by thought, word, and deed. Wherefore we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring Your grace for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ.

C O most merciful God, who has given Your only-begotten Son to die for us, have mercy upon us and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Your Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of You and of Your will and true obedience to Your Word, to the end that by Your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

The minister faces the assembly, announcing God’s mercy by the blood of Jesus which washes us clean in the waters of Holy baptism and allows us entrance into the holy of holies where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.

P Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us and has given His only Son to die for us and for His sake forgives us all our sins. To those who believe on His name He gives power to become the children of God and has promised them His Holy Spirit. He that believes and is baptized shall be saved.Grant this, Lord, unto us all.

C Amen.

The call to gather:“Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that He opened for us through the curtain, that is, through His flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” (Heb. 10:19-25)

The Blessing & Collect of the Day (A Collect is a common prayer of all Christians in every time and place.)

The Lord’s minister first addresses the congregation at the Blessing (the Preparatory Rite not properly belonging to the Holy Liturgy but an extension of private confession). The minister blesses the people – “The Lord be with you” – and they bless him – “And with thy spirit” – that he might fulfill his ministry of prayer and teaching by the Spirit of the Lord Jesus (cf. Ruth 2:4).

P The Lord be with you.

Let us pray....…one God, now and forever.

A prayer (Psalm 43:3) at hearing the word of the Lord: “O Lord, send out Thy light and Thy truth, let them lead me.”

The First Reading 1 Samuel 2:1-10 SitAnd Hannah, the mother of Samuel, prayed and said, “My heart exults in the Lord; my strength is exalted in the Lord. My mouth derides my enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation. “There is none holy like the Lord; there is none besides you; there is no rock like our God. Talk no more so very proudly, let not arrogance come from your mouth; for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed. The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble bind on strength. Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread, but those who were hungry have ceased to hunger. The barren has borne seven, but she who has many children is forlorn. The Lord kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up. The Lord makes poor and makes rich; he brings low and he exalts. He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honor. For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s, and on them he has set the world. “He will guard the feet of his faithful ones, but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness, for not by might shall a man prevail. The adversaries of the Lord shall be broken to pieces; against them he will thunder in heaven. The Lord will judge the ends of the earth; he will give strength to his king and exalt the power of his anointed.”The Word of the Lord. R Thanks be to God.

The Gradual Psalm 33:12, 6 Cantor( Called the “gradual” because it is a gradual step up from the Old

Testament reading to the Epistle reading on our way to the Holy Gospel.)

The Epistle Ephesians 4:1-6Brethren: I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call—one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.The Word of the Lord. R Thanks be to God.

The Alleluia and Verse (An acclamation of praise, the Church sings “Alleluia” because Jesus is risen.)

The Holy Gospel is the high point of the Liturgy of the Word. The Book of the Gospels is raised and we stand because the Lord is among us in His Holy Gospel. Processions and other rituals of prayer and bodily postures help honor and bring reverence to this solemn event of the Lord among us.

P The continuation of the T Holy Gospel according to St. Luke (St. Luke 14:1-11)

T At that time: one Sabbath, when [Jesus] went to dine at the house of a ruler of the Pharisees, they were watching him carefully. And behold, there was a man before him who had dropsy. And Jesus responded to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?” But they remained silent. Then he took him and healed him and sent him away. And he said to them, “Which of you, having a son or an ox that has fallen into a well on a Sabbath day, will not immediately pull him out?” And they could not reply to these things. Now he told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they chose the places of honor, saying to them, “When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest someone more distinguished than you be invited by him, and he who invited you both will come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this person,’ and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

P The T Gospel of the Lord.

The Apostles’ CreedI believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the

Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen.

The Hymn of the Day Seek Where You May LSB 557 Sit(It is suggested that the family use the Hymn of the Day throughout the

week for at-home devotions.)The Sermon

The Catechetical Instruction – Christian Questions With Their Answers7. Who is Christ? The Son of God, true God and man.8. How many Gods are there? Only one, but there are three persons: Father,

Son, and Holy Spirit.9. What has Christ done for you that you trust in Him? He died for me and shed

His blood for me on the cross for the forgiveness of sins.10. Did the Father also die for you? He did not. The Father is God only, as is

the Holy Spirit; but the Son is both true God and true man. He died for me and shed His blood for me.

11. How do you know this? From the Holy Gospel, from the words instituting the Sacrament, and by His body and blood given me as a pledge in the Sacrament.

The Holy Communion will not be distributed today; if you would like the Holy Communion this week you are encouraged to attend the

weekly distribution at the Divine Service on Thursdays at 10:00am at Legacy of Herington Assisted Living.

“At the outset we must again make the preliminary statement that we do not abolish the mass, but religiously maintain and defend it. For among us masses are

celebrated every Lord's Day and on the other festivals, in which the Sacrament is offered to those who wish to use it, after they have been examined and absolved. And the usual public ceremonies are observed, the series of lessons, of prayers,

vestments, and other like things.”

The Apology of the Augsburg Confession: The Mass, XXIV, paragraph 1

The Offering (The offering is given by Christians for the work of the ministry, St. Luke 8:1-3, and to care for the poor, Gal 2:10; 1 Tim. 5:18. The “Peace of the Lord” may be shared by all.)

“Through [Jesus] then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of the lips that acknowledge His name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” (Heb. 13:15-16)

Questions on the Gospel Reading & Service for conversation with your family and friends:

1) What does “Sabbath” mean?2) Why didn’t the lawyers and Pharisees answer Jesus when He asked them a

question? Do you think they knew He was wiser than they were?3) Is it more important to do look holy or to have mercy on others and serve their

needs?4) What does “parable” mean?5) What does it mean to be humble?

6) Is it better to be asked to move from the lowest place to the place of honor, or from the place of honor to the lowest place?

Remember to invite your family and friends to come, hear, and learn from Jesus next Sunday.

Sunday Morning Schedule10:30am – The Divine Service

the Confession of the Lutheran churches

~ The Augsburg Confession ~

ARTICLE XXVI: OF THE DISTINCTION OF MEATS It has been the general persuasion, not of the people alone, but also of those teaching

in the churches, that making Distinctions of Meats, and like traditions of men, are works profitable to merit grace, and able to make satisfactions for sins. And that the world so thought, appears from this, that new ceremonies, new orders, new holy-days, and new fasts were daily instituted, and the teachers in the churches did exact these works as a service necessary to merit grace, and did greatly terrify men's consciences, if they should omit any of these things. From this persuasion concerning traditions much detriment has resulted in the Church.

First, the doctrine of grace and of the righteousness of faith has been obscured by it, which is the chief part of the Gospel, and ought to stand out as the most prominent in the Church, in order that the merit of Christ may be well known, and faith, which believes that sins are forgiven for Christ's sake be exalted far above works. Wherefore Paul also lays the greatest stress on this article, putting aside the Law and human traditions, in order to show that Christian righteousness is something else than such works, to wit, the faith which believes that sins are freely forgiven for Christ's sake. But this doctrine of Paul has been almost wholly smothered by traditions, which have produced an opinion that, by making distinctions in meats and like services, we must merit grace and righteousness. In treating of repentance, there was no mention made of faith; only those works of satisfaction were set forth; in these the entire repentance seemed to consist.

Secondly, these traditions have obscured the commandments of God, because traditions were placed far above the commandments of God. Christianity was thought to consist wholly in the observance of certain holy-days, rites, fasts, and vestures. These observances had won for themselves the exalted title of being the spiritual life and the perfect life. Meanwhile the commandments of God, according to each one's calling, were without honor namely, that the father brought up his offspring, that the mother bore children, that the prince governed the commonwealth,—these were accounted works that were worldly and imperfect, and far below those glittering observances. And this error greatly tormented devout consciences, which grieved that they were held in an imperfect state of life, as in marriage, in the office of magistrate; or in other civil ministrations; on

Page 15: Our Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Churchourredeemerherington.org/.../docs/2017-10-08J_Trinity_1…  · Web viewOur Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church. 802 E. Trapp, Herington ...

the other hand, they admired the monks and such like, and falsely imagined that the observances of such men were more acceptable to God.

God has instituted a lofty, beautiful worship; namely, His remembrance and the glory of the passion of Christ, and to it He has borne witness that He is indeed well-pleased with it. If you want to engage in a marvelous great worship of God and honor Christ’s passion rightly, then remember and participate in the sacrament. In it there is a remembrance of Him; that is, He is praised and glorified. If you practice or assist in practicing this same remembrance with diligence, then you will assuredly forget about the self-chosen forms of worship, for you cannot praise and thank God too often or too much for His grace revealed in Christ.

T Dr. Martin Luther, 1530

Welcome toOur Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran ChurchWe cordially welcome all who gather with us around the Altar and Pulpit to hear and receive the Word of God. If you are visiting this morning, please sign the Guest Register in the narthex and fill out a pew card. We hope that you will come again. If you would like to learn more about worshiping and communing at Our Redeemer, please visit with Pastor Lovett.

Our churches practice closed communion. Communicants are baptized Christians who have been instructed in the Chief Articles of Christian Doctrine – The Ten Commandments, The Creed, The Lord’s Prayer, The Sacrament of Holy Baptism, Confession and the Office of The Keys, and the Sacrament of the Altar – and have been formally admitted to the fellowship of the Altar and continue in that fellowship as a congregant of Our Redeemer or another Christian congregation committed to rightly preach the Word of God and administer the Sacraments according to Christ’s institution and mandate. If you would like to receive the Holy Communion, but have not previously communed at our altar, please speak with the pastor.
