July Church Council Minutes

Continued on page 11
The St Olaf Church Council met Tuesday, July 14 at St. Olaf’s Re-treat Center. Present were Stacy MacDonald, Cindy Axtman, Betty Nygren, Marcus Dahle, Steve We-ber, Darci Gilbertson, Chuck Longie, Bob Hatten, Sheldon Severtson, Rhonda Allery, Mary Jo Hoiberg, Joe Hoiberg and Pastor Jeff. The meeting opened with De-votions by Pastor Jeff from the book “The Five Practices”. His message was about radical hospital-ity. Mary Jo moved to approve the June minutes as printed in the Spire. Steve seconded the motion. Bob gave the Treasurer’s Report. As of July 7th the balance in the General Fund is $10,907.81. We reviewed the bills to be paid. Joe made a motion to approve the re-port. Cindy seconded the motion. Motion approved. Unfinished Business: A. Faith and Care Guidelines: Stacey presented a sample post card to be sent to members for their faith and care obligation. The post card sample was approved. B. Outside sign: Discussion. Put on next months agenda when someone is present from Church Properties. C. Mis-sion Statement: Stacey will ask Bishop Terry Brandt to help with this in the fall. D. Retreat Center: We met here this month to look at the updates that have been done. The council was disappointed that there was no representation from the Retreat Center Board. The council would like a special meet-ing with the Retreat Center Board so we can help market the Retreat Center. Sheldon volunteered to attend their next meeting. E. Dis-
covering Hope: Stacey and Pastor Jeff shared some new ideas they came away with that involve all members of our church. Some ide-as were a prayer table with sticky notes, door hangers and infor-mation about our church in Col-lege Chamber Packs. We would like to set up committees to get this started. New Business: A. Linking Chari-ties with fund raising. One exam-ple would be our rummage sale. 10% of the proceeds would be giv-en to a certain charity. This would be noted at the sale. B. IRS changes: We received a letter from Bishop Brandt that St. Olaf needs to do a Health Re-imbursement 105. The cost of the legal work will be between $750-$1000. Marcus made a motion to pay for this legal work. Mary Jo seconded. The motion was approved. St. Olaf can still pay BCBS directly because of the limited number of employees. C. Stained Glass: A company came to St. Olaf July 14th to make appraisal for stained glass. Respectfully submitted by Cindy Axtman, Church Council Secre-tary Outreach and Evangelism: Minutes July 2015. Present: Joseph Hoiberg, Vonnie Erickstad. Web-site: Joe contacted a web develop-ment business in Fargo and re-ceived a questionnaire back so the developer could better understand our needs. The board answered all the questions and the questionnaire will be sent back to the developer. We will continue to contact other providers. Vonnie brought up ideas
regarding developing some mission ideas to help out Dakotah Oyate. She spoke with Russ Pearson about bringing some music out there at some point. There may be an op-portunity to do more. We will continue to discuss this in the fu-ture. Recording Worship Services: Table to next meeting. Joe brought up possibility of creating a new logo for the church since we are already looking at our marketing with redeveloping the website. Joe presented an idea he came up with. It was decided we would keep this in mind along as we change the website. Submitted by Joseph Hoi-berg, Chairman Stewardship: Board met July 8, 2015. Present: Sheldon Severtson, Jeri Steffan and Lacey Dahle. Ab-sent: Kent Ness. The stewardship program has been approved and will be ordered by Darci as soon as it’s available in July. Then Lacey will look it over and distribute cop-ies for the rest of the committee members at the August meeting. The goal is to start the program in September. The next meeting will be Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 7 p.m. New committee members always welcome. The Hope Center was blessed with so
many volunteers (40 of them for a
total of 186 hours) in June. Dona-
tions of food brought into the center
was great as well as all the monetary
donations. As we grow, all these fac-
tors are so important. The Hope
Center could not exist without the
help given by our friends and neigh-
bors. And grow we continue to do!!!!!!
June brought 162 households to the
Hope Center for a total of 421 per-
sons we helped in the fight against
hunger. 8,343 pounds of food and
liquids were distributed in monthly
boxes. The produce, garden, deli and
bakery totaled 2,862 pounds which is
all in addition to the regular groceries
given.
We have had several gardeners bring
in fresh vegetables. We have cabbage,
beets, lettuce, radishes, rhubarb,
beans---isn’t that wonderful. We still
get bread and deli AND boxes of
cookies and crackers through Leevers
plus Walmart donates a hugh amount
of groceries of every sort to the pan-
try.
Every other month, there is a com-
modities program for seniors (60 and
older). June was that month. There
were 39 persons receiving about 60
lbs of food each. Right now we have
45 signed up for August and 50 for
October. This food comes directly
from USDA in Bismarck and is not a
cost to the center or part of the food
on our shelves. Another wonderful
program. The Hope Center is work-
ing with six counties (Region III) with
plans to help them develop their own
program for these seniors.
We are working on the Web page and
not nearly where we want to be but
check out the Hope Center on Face
Book. There is many updates there
often.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you to
all our helpers and donators.
Blessings to All
