How to get started To set up elec-tronic donations, simply complete the authorization form available in the Centennial Room or call the office and Darci will send you one and return it to the church office. Donations can be debited automatically from either a checking or savings account.

Would you like to
know more about the
Lord’s Prayer?
This
year
during
the 40
days of
Lent we
are of-
fering
devo-
tions for
your
Lenten
Journey. The journey involves
reading and then praying a
short devotion each day on a
part of the Lord’s Prayer. Also,
before our Wednesday Lenten
services we’ll meet at 5:30 pm
to discuss the preceding week
of devotional readings. Togeth-
er these experiences will guide
us all to grow spiritually. Since
prayer and Bible study are
among the disciplines of faith,
you are invited to walk with
Pastor Jim and our members in
deepening your understanding
and to explore the meaning be-
hind the Lord’s Prayer. To
plan for this Lenten Journey,
we need you to sign up as ear-
ly as possible so we can place
an order for the devotional
booklet. We’ll be using the
Book of Faith Lenten Journey
entitled 40 days with
the Lord’s Prayer, by Henry F. French. A sign-up
sheet is now in the Centennial
Room.
The season of Lent is here,
beginning with Ash Wednes-
day . Lent is the opportunity
to explore our faith practices
in new ways. Everything be-
gins with our baptism as this
blessing from God comes with
the promise of receiving vari-
ous spiritual gifts. We may
view our
worship
and church
involve-
ment as
already
being quite
satisfacto-
ry. But
during
Lent we
can ask
God to
guide us to
deeper
faith and
not be
afraid of
what that
means.
What means something now
as faith can be even more, if
we are open to it. While
Epiphany makes us aware of
God’s revelation to us through
Christ, Lent guides us to dwell
on our receptivity of God’s
spirit through the practices of
prayer, fasting, Bible study,
worship and sacraments.
Make no mistake that God is
always there, but Lent is our
time to be honest about the
obstacles—the sin that gets in
the way. What keeps us from
growing in our faith? What
could be different in our
awareness of God speaking
to us? Please understand
that obstacles aren’t really
mysterious things , but can
include poor choices that po-
tentially lead us away from
rather than toward God. How
we use our time and what
time we
leave for
God are
things to
consider
during Lent.
It is a win
win when
we make
God and
doing God’s
work to be
more im-
portant.
We’ll be
praying and
discussing
the Lord’s
Prayer too during our
Wednesday nights in Lent. It
is a prayer many of us know
well, but there is always the
chance of learning a fuller
meaning to something we al-
ready pray.
Blessings to you in
Christ’s name,
Pastor Jim

What is a Circle? Are you in one?
This is the third in a series about St. Olaf circles and their missions. While the circles are typically comprised of women, men are welcome to contribute with either items, $ or time. Anyone with a Thrivent product can apply for a $250 grant toward any of the missions talked about in this series. Go to the Thrivent web site and click on action team and follow the prompts.
This month we will talk about Deborah Circle's mission. Deborah collects items for "Baby Care Kits" for Lutheran World Relief. (These are different than the "Infant Kits" for Global Health Ministries assembled by Miriam Circle talked about last month.) Deborah Circle assembles the kits once a year in April. Assembly time will be announced in the Spire and bulletins. You may bring items to the church at any time throughout the year and leave them in the quilting room. Contact Diane Seale 662-1109 or Judy Strong 662-2460 with any questions or suggestions. The baby care kits consist of: 2 receiving blankets -med. weight cotton or flan-nel, or crocheted or knitted light weight yarn up to 52" sq., small hand towel (dark color), 4 diapers (flat fold 24x27), 2 diaper pins or large safety pins, 2 bars of soap, 2 cotton T-shirts, 2 long or short sleeved sleepers (no feet) 6-12 mo size, 2 pair of socks, hooded sweater or hooded sweatshirt or cap and sweater.
S O S St Olaf WELCA has teamed up with a Thrivent Action Team to gather bars of soap (any size) or liquid hand or bath soap. The goal is to make a very high “Stack Of Soap” to be given to Lutheran World Relief, Prairie Heights, Veterans, Hope Center, Dakota Prairie, Homeless Shelter, SAAF house or any non-profit that can make use of this (if you are vol-unteering or know of some-one who could use some soap, please call Stella at 662-8450). One of the major benefits of soap is for washing hands and preventing flu and colds. This is especially pertinent for this time of the year. Please pick up a bar or two when you are out shopping. The display will be set up in the Centennial Room through March 19th. Monetary donations are al-ways welcome; leave them in the office with Darci. Thank you so much for your participation in this project.

February Council Meeting Minutes St. Olaf Church Council Meeting. Tues-day, Feb. 14, 2017 Present: Pastor Jim Paulson, Rodger Haugen, Betty Nygren, Ray Strong, Daria Miller, Jeri Steffan, Emily Kimball, Rachel Quam, Ray Sletteland, Jamie Travers, Colette Boehmer, Darci Gilbertson Absent: Tom Wade, Marcus Dahle, Steve Geigle Pastor Jim led the council in devotions and discussion on how to be a "welcoming" church. We welcomed the new council members. Treasurer Rodger Haugen called the meeting to order. Rodger presided over the meeting due to the absence of Presi-dent Tom Wade and VP Marcus Dahle. The minutes from the January council meeting were reviewed. Betty moved to accept the minutes as written. Ray Strong seconded. The minutes were ap-proved. Rodger presented the treasurer's report. The General fund, Building fund, and Designated fund all show positive bal-ances. We still owe $20,000.00 on the line of credit. Rodger moved to accept the treasurer's report. Rodger turned the meeting over to Co-lette to complete the action on the mo-tion. Ray Sletteland seconded. All ap-proved and the treasurer's report was accepted. Pastor Jim's report of activities was re-viewed. Pastor Jim added that he will be taking vacation March 12-18. Jamie's report was reviewed. Jamie reported on several activities that will be happening in March. Committee reports were presented and reviewed.
Old Business: The council discussed the Torsk Feed. The Torsk Feed will be held on Sunday, April 9. Money raised will be donated to the American Cancer Society. Emily will talk with Judy MacDonald on details. New Business: The council discussed sound problems that have been occur-ring during the Sunday service radio broadcasts. Darci has spoken with NDTC and the radio station about this. It was recommended that the equipment be moved from the furnace room to the closet under the stairs. The furnace room is too warm for the equipment to work properly. Jeri moved to have an electri-cian place an outlet in the closet so the broadcast equipment can be moved. Ra-chel seconded. The motion was ap-proved. The council discussed ideas to pay off the line of credit. One idea discussed is an envelope fundraiser. Different mone-tary amounts are written on envelopes and members would choose an envelope to make a donation. Ray Sletteland made a motion to proceed with the envelope project to help pay off the line of credit. Emily seconded. The motion was ap-proved. The council also discussed paying an amount monthly from the general fund toward the line of credit. Jeri moved to pay $200.00 a month to the line of cred-it. Emily seconded. Motion was ap-proved. Ray Sletteland made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Betty seconded. The meeting was adjourned. We closed with the Lord's Prayer. Respectfully submitted, Colette Boehmer
