Note from Teacher Advisor:

Ms. Consilz, Tan

Lecturer-Business Program,

Founder & Advisor for

Murdoch University

Commerce Society (MUCS)

„While it matters a lot that you have a goal, a vision and an arc

to get there, it matters even more that you don‟t skip the

preliminary steps in your hurry to get to the future. Early steps

might bore you, but miss even one and you might not get the

chance to execute on the later ones.‟ Yes, totally agree with

Seth Godin. This is what I was hoping to deliver when started

up the Society. I anticipate the obstacles that we might

encounter along the way. Nevertheless, with the hope to get the

beloved students able to learn the baby steps before jump into

their future, I made the decision in year 2010. I do wish the

existence of Society had helped our students to realize their

dreams and, of course continue helping them to paint colours

into their uni life.

I think people will have a lot to say about resolution when come

to the end of a year. No exception case for me. Yep, we as

Murdoch University Commerce Society team members wish to

continue providing a variety of activities for KDU students and

staffs in year 2013. Of course, we would like to extend our

relationship to the community too.

Last but not least, let‟s give a round of applause to all the board

members of the Society and students who have participated in

our activities in 2012.

Murdoch University Commerce Society (MUCS) was previously known as

Hello, everyone. It‟s our 4th

bulletin time which means I am leading the

society for 1 year. Time flies. There are a lot of events we organized for

the past 1 year and it‟s time for us to reflect back and check the objective

and vision that we set 1 year ago. In this coming new term, we are shifting

our direction towards character building and leadership personalities. We

realize the important to build a strong foundation and the core must be

strong and equipped to continue taking the lead in campus activities in

KDU University College.

Therefore, many events are planned and conducted for example

Career talk, YES talk, Business Challenge, Committee retreats, Fund

raising and many more in the coming month. We set the goal to bring

bigger exposure for our new committees to pick up the momentum and

society‟s culture. We are recruiting capable members to join us, are you?

The calling for the society is cleared that to equipped students to

be future corporate leader and we will continue in doing it. This is what

I believe: true leaders don‟t create more followers; they create more

leaders!! And I believe everyone is called to be leaders in different stage

and areas of their lives.

Thank you for entrusting me again to be the president for the

society and let us continue to be the leading society in KDU and example

for others to follow.

Feel free to share your brilliant ideas and thoughts with us. My

From Ordinary Students to Student Leader:

My journey with Murdoch University Commerce Society (MUCS) Written by Mohamed Isbullah Mohamed Jiffry

February 2012, I joined Murdoch University Bachelor of Commerce major in accounting degree

program in KDU UC. During orientation, I was brought to the attention that there is a student body

for the degree program that I am taking. First things that struck my mind was , Murdoch University

Commerce Society(MUCS) just like other student bodies focus on university events like orientations,

student gathering, ceremonies and etc.. Most of the students who attended the orientation were my

diploma fellow friends which I studied in KDU as well. Halfway throughout the session, MUCS

share on their vision which is committed to excellence, and mission statements on 5 core values:

strong personalities, success driven, passionate, positive values and love life & people. When the

president, Jin Chieh shares on all the events that MUCS have done for the students, I was amazed by

the team as they are not only organizing events to Murdoch students but for the whole KDU students.

The society have a committees of different races and nations and the strong bonding of the team

impressed me a lot, and which made me feel like to be part of the society.

While I was in my first semester, MUCS was pleased to organize events which were very

useful for students. The events such as entrepreneurship talks, visit to CPA Australia career expo, Sin

Chew Daily, Jobstreet Resume Writing and Interview Workshop, Murdoch Red Day and many more.

At the end of the semester, MUCS organized a trip to Pangkor Island, which they did a great by

managing 82 people by 5 society members and the lecturer in charge. It was a great event which

made me communicate and be friend with other people. I was given an opportunity to help out the

Page 8: RED issue 4

P a g e | 8

KDU-MURDOCH UNIVERSITY COMMERCE SOCIETY (MUCS) RED issue 4

committees during the trip, that‟s making me to stand a chance to be part of the team in future which I

never knew my little help leads me to be part of the core team of this leading society at KDU

University College.

In the following semester, I decided to take a step of faith to join the recruitment session of

new board for MUCS. After weeks of resume submission, face to face interview, I was so glad and

proud to be selected as the Vice President (corporate relations) of MUCS. It was my first experience

in a society which gave me a great dignity. I also was able to take part in meetings to decide on what

events that we‟ve going to do for the students. There were many events decided and we‟ve fulfilled

most of it such as entrepreneurship talks, investment seminars, fund raisings, business challenge,

happiness project which in conjunction with the world mental health week; Sky Fall movie outing. To

add on, I was given opportunity to sharpen my leadership and soft skills through organizing different

activities.

And now, I am involved in planning and executing the upcoming trip to Langkawi Island at

the end of the semester. I am very proud that through MUCS, I can play a part to improve the

students‟ welfare; at the same time enjoying every moment in the society. My entire perspective

change as through MUCS, I start to visualize that we as students can play a part to build up the

campus we want to be and the study life we wish to have. Instead of complaining, now I am able to

see that as board member in MUCS, I am able to bring solution and closing the gap of understanding

Page 9: RED issue 4

between university and students. I am excited to look forward to organize more events for students in

future. This is my experience in MUCS.

Last but not least, let‟s us join hand and continue to inspired others.

Checked & Edited by : Jin Chieh

August 3, 2012

When you are just done with your A „levels and you join an undergraduate program, things might

seem a little too complicated. Making new friends, getting to know the campus and adjusting to the

university life can be some of the greatest challenges you might face.

KDU Murdoch University Commerce Society (MUCS) took this opportunity to welcome the

new Murdoch-ers, by organizing an orientation program on Friday, the 3rd

of August. Facilitated by

the board members of MUCS, the main objective of this program was to make the new Murdoch-ers

„feel at home‟!

The orientation started with an intro session, followed by a discussion and a Q&A session.

Some of the issues discussed involve what the students expected from MUCS, in order for us to be

able to organize highly valued activities. Also, a wide array of activities was proposed to enhance the

campus life experience of the students. Besides that, an interactive Q&A session was held to clear the

air.

Young Entrepreneur Series Talk- Be Young,

Be Entrepreneurs- Mr. Kho Han Jia

Reported by Roshan Panditji

Checked & Edited by Jin Chieh

August 29, 2012

All I can say that it was such a great opportunity to be part of an entrepreneurial endeavor. It all

started when the society president approached us about the marketing of this discount book known as

Worthy Book. We were all skeptical at first but when we personally inspected the book we were

surprised at the various discount vouchers available ranging from brands such as Share Tea, Subway,

Shogun, Beer Factory, Fruit Boost etc. The deals were too good to be true. The value of the book

itself was really worth it. It had over 275 vouchers with a value of over RM3000 plus more. For

further information I request you to purchase the book.

Now the challenge faced of marketing the book itself. Our president split us into various teams,

mainly the accounting versus the marketing team. It was a challenging contest but in the end the

marketing team lost surprisingly to the accounting team. From selling these books we learnt a lot

Page 18: RED issue 4

P a g e | 18

KDU-MURDOCH UNIVERSITY COMMERCE SOCIETY (MUCS) RED issue 4

from the people‟s feedback about the book. As a result of our marketing skills we managed to sell a

total of 84 worthy books within a space of 2 weeks.

After our relentless 2 weeks of marketing the Worthy Book the time had now come to meet its

founding chief executive officers, Mr Han Jia and Mr Ken Kho, the masterminds behind the book.

They both came to tell us about how they came up with the idea of Worthy Book and the various

hardships they endured from beginning to end upon creating worthy book.

Now I leave you with the testimonials from those who witness the speech from the brain child‟s of

Worthy Book.

Jin Chieh:

It was a great experience and privilege to hear from a postgraduate of Engineering from renown

Oxford University, Mr. Han Jia to share his heart-beat and how an engineer graduate venture into the

Page 19: RED issue 4

P a g e | 19

KDU-MURDOCH UNIVERSITY COMMERCE SOCIETY (MUCS) RED issue 4

corporate world. The whole session was inspiring as how he came across the idea of forming a food

and beverage voucher books, Worthy Book and what are challenges he faced when first started the

business and how he overcome the challenges. As well, Mr. Han Jia do share his passions and some

of his favorite quotes and people that he looked up to. It was our pleasure to have Mr. Han Jia in the

house.

Isbullah:

This was really inspirational in the sense that how the owners were able to achieve success by coming

up with the idea of worthy book. The owners shared many ideas regarding entrepreneurs and how

they overcame barriers in their fight to make worthy book a success. This talk made me realize how

people achieve their dreams no matter what obstacles come in their way.

Ian Fan:

Every person has an inspiring story to tell, and Mr. Han Jia, Worthy Book founder, is no exception.

He shared on the journey and struggles of Worthy Book from its humble beginnings to where it is

today, and the future direction of the company. The interesting part is that despite coming from a non-

business background, graduating with an engineering degree, Mr. Han Jia is today an entrepreneur. It

is not about the degree or qualifications, but it is the person‟s character and attitude that helps him or

her to succeed in business. On a whole, it was an educational and inspiring lesson to remember from

this event.

Yasutaa:

I never knew such book even exists in the market until we did this project. The book consists of 275

vouchers worth for a very reasonable price. I was told to sell the book and it was really challenging as

the people I approach don‟t know much about the book and to convince them that the choice they are

making is the right one was indeed challenging. In the end of the day I was really happy that I

manage to sell more than 20 books.

MUCS Committee Retreat: A getaway trip to Malacca

Reported by Amanda Lim

Checked & Edited by Jin Chieh September 27, 2012

Recently, Murdoch University Commerce Society (MUCS) organized a trip to Malacca. This trip is

especially for committee members. The purpose of this event was to allow students to get a break

from the college/university. It is a 3 days 2 nights trip.

On the 25th

of September 2012, committee members gathered at the KL Sentral at 8.00a.m.

Then, we have our breakfast at McDonald‟s. After breakfast, committee members have to take KLIA

transit from KL Sentral to TBN terminal. From TBN terminal, we have to wait for the bus to arrive

before we can board on it. Our departure time is 10.45a.m. When it is time, we board on the bus and

each of us are seating according to the tickets. At 12.15p.m., we reach Malacca‟s terminal. From there,

we took taxi to our hotel, Syaz Meridian hotel which is a strategic location to town, night market and

shopping complex. Once we reach our destination, we put our luggage before going out for lunch.

Around 1.00p.m., we walk out of our hotel to hunt for food. We settle down at a Malay restaurant and

Page 25: RED issue 4

P a g e | 25

KDU-MURDOCH UNIVERSITY COMMERCE SOCIETY (MUCS) RED issue 4

each one of us ordered own food. Once our tummies are fulfilled, we are going to visit shopping

malls. The first mall we went was Mahkota Parade. At the mall, we walk around. For dinner,

everyone order a dish and share among ourselves.

Time flies, on the second day that we arrived, we had breakfast at the hotel. After breakfast,

we went to town. Some went for a walk at the ship and others went for shopping at the stalls nearby.

Furthermore, a few of us also went for a trishaw ride. The trishaw brings us around Malacca. The

trishaw man told us about each place we pass by. Then, everyone gathered and we are visiting the

Jonker‟s street. There are many shops at the street and varieties of things sold. For instance, food stall,

Page 26: RED issue 4

P a g e | 26

bags stall, shoes stall and etc. In the noon, we are heading to chicken rice shop to eat our lunch. When

we are done eating, we went to sing karaoke from 2p.m. to 6p.m. After the karaoke time, we are

going back to hotel before coming out for supper. We chatted and watched television in our hotel

room. At 8.30p.m., we are going out for supper. We ate “satay” from Malacca and then head back to

hotel.

The next day which is also our last day in Malacca, we are checking out of the hotel room at

12p.m. we had our breakfast at the hotel. After breakfast, we went back to our room to play cards

before going out to do last minute shopping. At 10.30a.m., we went out to buy few things before

heading back and checking out of our rooms. It is about time to leave Malacca. We get on the bus at

1.40p.m. And reach Pudu bus station at 3.40p.m.

Breaking the impossible: MUCS in KDU Sports Carnival 2012

Reported by Yih Think

Checked & Edited by Jin Chieh September 29, 2012

The KDU Sports Carnival 2012 took place at the Stadium MBPJ, Petaling Jaya on 22nd September

2012. This year sports objective was pushing the limits and breaking the barriers whereby based on

my opinion, I strongly agree that everyone who participated in this carnival was well suited for this

statement. I see in my own eyes that every athlete strives hard to win, though I did not attend every

sport but because of their spirit and attitude of not giving up amazed me.

Moreover, there was another group of students who truly impressed me whereby they are the

volunteered students from Murdoch University Commerce Society (MUCS). What makes them so

special that they had earned my admiration and respect?

Page 28: RED issue 4

P a g e | 28

KDU-MURDOCH UNIVERSITY COMMERCE SOCIETY (MUCS) RED issue 4

• They came all the way from home (they do not stay in Petaling Jaya but as far as Taman Tun

and some even stay overnight at their friends‟ house) to Stadium MBPJ, Petaling Jaya before 7:30am

to get the best spot so that it will be convenient for all the buyers and also setting up the tables.

• Students who are very thoughtful that they carried a lot of drinks with them and walk around

the stadium under the hot sun to deliver drinks to the spectators. How considerate are they.

• Most importantly, they came here to help out because they want to and they do not expect

something in return.

Overall, their behavior and the spirit of co-operative inspired me to not give up easily when I do faced

any barriers and keep on fighting until the end. While I know some people would be complaining

much with the hassles, but before saying this, one should consider the following questions first. Are

you keen to help? Are you ready to face all the barriers? Are you willing to sacrifice? Saying could be

easy but doing all those is a real challenge to every students.

Page 29: RED issue 4

P a g e | 29

KDU-MURDOCH UNIVERSITY COMMERCE SOCIETY (MUCS) RED issue 4

The sports carnival 2012 was very well organized. I was having a great time in this sports carnival,

my friends and I were busy cheering our lungs out to support our friends and lecturers. This carnival

had benefited me because it increases my bonding with friends which I truly appreciate and in the

mean time I also met a few new friends. „Yay‟!

Last but not least, the overall Champion of the Sports Carnival 2012 is the Red House where they are

led by Mr. Lai Chee Onn and Mr. L. Ramesh who were the academic staff of KDU, representing

School of Business and Law, following Blues house in second place, then Green and Yellow house.

Besides that, Stephen Tang representing Murdoch University as Red house won the title of the Best

Sportsman in 2012.

Students’ Testimonies:

Yasutaa:

The initial plan was to set up a booth during the sports carnival and to sell drinks. However, during

the process of selling the drinks I manage to meet my entire old friend and the lectures who have

taught me previously as they all came to show their support to their team. Not only that, you get to

see the lecturers participating in events and how they compete among themselves to score point for

the team. In addition, it was a day where I get to show my skills in selling the drinks as the

Page 30: RED issue 4

P a g e | 30

KDU-MURDOCH UNIVERSITY COMMERCE SOCIETY (MUCS) RED issue 4

competition was there. I was really glad that I participated in this event as I get to not only sell drinks

but I also get to mingle around and meet new people.

Isbullah:

It was a fine day for having the sports carnival, everyone who were there enjoyed the full moment of

the events that took place. The Murdoch University Commerce Society once again for the second

time opened up a booth for selling drinks, all the society members were so excited and they were so

eager to sell the drinks for the people who attended the sports carnival. I was so happy that I also part

of the team who sold drinks.

Jin Chieh:

Great and this was our second time having opportunity to sell drinks in Sports Carnival. This time we

have new energetic committees joining us and they are doing well. Finally Red House became the

overall champion for KDU sports carnival after so many years. Let‟s continue the inspired spirit and

let us inspired others.
