GVS’ high quality printing and design service GVS’ printing and design service is a high quality service suited to the needs of voluntary organisations, large or small. In order to ensure you receive your printing, etc. on time we need four clear working weeks to design and print your material. The four weeks begin when we have received all the information from you in order for the job to proceed. If you are holding an event, you require invitations, programmes, etc., you want us to print the material and know the date when you want them by, just count back four weeks. For example, if you need the printed material by the 14th December then the information would need to be with GVS by the 16th November. By counting back four weeks, this is the latest date by which we will need all the material from you in order to process your order, so that you receive your printing, etc. on time. When you place an order for printing, etc. with GVS, you will be informed of the earliest date when your order will be completed, which will normally be four weeks after we have received all the information, material etc. from you as mentioned above. Of course, we will strive to complete earlier than four weeks wherever possible, but this cannot be guaranteed, so you should plan for a four week period in order for us to do your printing, etc. Your main point of contact within GVS for this service is Mark Stillman, e-mail: [email protected], tel: 01446 741706.

Barry Community Choir – Welcome! After a very successful recruitment campaign at the beginning of June and a well-attended concert at the end of June, we are now rehearsing for – dare we mention it – CHRISTMAS! Our doors are open from 7.15pm to start at 7.30pm. We are fortunate to have the use of Crossway Church and Hall and rehearse in the Hall. Our rehearsals usually last two hours which includes a 20-minute break. We sing off sheet music but there is no requirement to be able to read music as instruction is freely given.

We know that the first step in joining any group can be quite daunting, however, we are a very lively, friendly and happy choir. Our members’ ages range from 17 to 80+ and we have male and female members, with quite a few couples. Some of our members are registered disabled - fortunately, there is good disabled access to the Church and Hall. We have the benefit of two professionals in our music team – Emma Arscott is our Conductor - well-known as Musical Director of Billboards and local music teacher; Sian Davies is our accompanist, and has played and is playing for the good and great of British musical talent. We already have two performances booked in October and will be holding our own Christmas concert in late November/early December – further details will be available shortly. If you would like to join a Choir, or know of someone who might, why not give us a look over? The first month you attend is meant to be a “taster” to see if what we offer is right for you. There is nothing to pay within that first month. JOIN US

If you would like to have more information, we have a really good website: www.barrycommunitychoir.com; a Facebook page – using the same address, or if you would prefer to speak to someone, call Sheila on 01446 748724 or Helen on 029 2053 1359. We look forward to welcoming you!

Highly beneficial information for the Voluntary Sector and its partners

Stewart Ward - 13 years of volunteering!

Stewart Ward started volunteering for the Vale Volunteer Bureau (VVB) in 2005 and continued with its successor organisation, Glamorgan Voluntary Services (GVS), after its merger in 2015, a total of 13 years. His primary role was that of Graphic Designer and he designed many posters, publications and displays for our organisation, some of which you may have seen around the Vale. Stewart was a fantastic volunteer, reliable and committed and came in every Monday morning. He always regaled us with stories of his travels and family life and loved his ginger biscuits and cups of tea! Stewart has been an integral part to the GVS team and was a huge asset to the organisation and he will be greatly missed by all the staff. We wish him well for the future and with his next adventures.

Pob lwc Stewart!

Rathyatra (Chariot Festival) at the Memorial Hall on Sunday 22nd July 2018 Hindu Cohesion Mandal and Wales Tamil Sangam (Chair Mathan, President Kalpana and Team) proudly celebrated its third Rathyatra, singing and dancing all the way with Lord Murga’s blessings. Friends and family members attended in big numbers, dressed in their traditional finery. Weather and our Sun God was smiling on us all day. We were honoured and proud that Leighton Rowlands, the youngest Mayor in the history of Vale of Glamorgan Council attended the event. Barry Town Mayor Janice Charles, who loves to meet and chat with all of us was warm and lovely - Janice and her family stayed with us all and she enjoyed the South Indian food. Cllr Michaela Richardson was a star, walking, mixing, talking and eating with us. Love you all and thanks for coming. A big thanks go to Rita Limbrick, Cadoxton Youth Project, the lovely, young, energetic Air Cadets and a GVS Volunteer, who were all smiling and ever ready to help us. This is a very special event aimed to encourage members to network in order to develop strong relationships, to inspire our absolute best to our members to forge strong communities with a bright future. Our young members were charming, with so many dancing steps to remember their lovely / colourful dance. Annaya was very good at playing her guitar. Pannerselvam, his team and Sharmila and all our friends get a big thanks for their finger licking food. Mathan and all the boys had to spend a lot of their time assembling the Chariot.

An update on Age Connects Cardiff and the Vale Third Sector Broker in the Vale The Age Connects Cardiff and the Vale Third Sector Broker, co-located with Contact1V, provides tailored pathways of appropriate assistance for vulnerable, frail older people who live in the Vale and has provided this service since 2014. From April 2017 to March 2018, the Broker dealt with 217 referrals, from a range of sources. The number of referrals has increased year by year as the service becomes more well known. 63% of those referrals were for people aged over 81 and the oldest client has been 100. The Broker service provides a swift response for older people who are often in need of a range of voluntary services and who need support to access them. As such, it isn’t a straightforward signposting role as the Broker contacts each individual, and/or their carers who are referred to the service, with a phone call to further ascertain their needs. By doing this initial triage the Broker is often able to pick up additional issues of their concern and engage the most appropriate service(s) that may be able to provide the support needed. Where cases are more complex and face to face contact is required, the Broker is able to accommodate a home visit. Loneliness and isolation are the main reasons for referrals. Other services in high demand were benefit entitlement, befriending, information on social activities and community transport services. As a result, a wide range of voluntary support was provided with home visits, benefits claiming, shopping, confidence building, reducing isolation through the placement of befriending volunteers and helping to access local social activities/groups, advocacy issues, information provision on a wide range of topics and signposting to other appropriate services. The Broker is also able to identify gaps in services and highlight these in reports to statutory funders. Current gaps include more face to face services that will cover the wide Vale locality such as escorting /transport to attend social groups and activities, befriending and shopping and support for people with dementia. Feedback from clients, and those who refer, has been positive. “I find this an invaluable service as Ana holds the knowledge of my patients needs when they would like to access the community. It allows me to make one referral and to use my time more efficiently”. The Broker role provides one single access point for referrals and allows services for older people with complex needs to be pulled together around the person, so responding directly to their needs.

Rotary Club of Cowbridge Grand Charity Quiz The Rotary Club of Cowbridge will again be holding “A Grand Charity Quiz” on Saturday 17th November commencing at 7.00pm for a 7.30pm start. The venue will be Cowbridge Town Hall. We hope your organisation / group will be able to field a team. The Quiz is open to teams of four people from clubs, societies, businesses or any local group. There will be an entrance fee of £24 per team, and the teams will be asked to nominate a charity with prizes for the charity of £250, £100 and £50, subject to the number of teams entering. Any surplus money raised on the night will be divided between Rotary nominated charities. Team members will work together and answers will be in written form. Drinks will be available from the bar run by the Rotary Club of Cowbridge. If your organisation or group would like to enter a team, please return the Entry Form http://www.gvs.wales/news/2018/08/rotary-club-of-cowbridge-grand-charity-quiz to the address on the form with the entry fee of £24. Please name the preferred charity you wish to support, not simply your own organisation. This year we have again widened our invitations and as there is an upper limit we can accommodate in the Town Hall, we would be grateful if you could return your registration forms as soon as possible as only the first 30 teams to register can be accepted. We would like to retain your contact details for this event in future years. We will only use your details for this event. We will not pass your details to anyone else. If you would like us to delete your details, please let us know. This request is to comply with the new “General Data Protection Regulations”.

Overall the service continues to fulfil its brief, maximising information and support opportunities available to older vulnerable adults, in order to empower people to make choices and informed decisions that will enable them to live at home safely and divert demand away from statutory services. If you would like further information about the Age Connects Third Sector Broker, please contact Ana Philips, Vale Third Sector Broker, Customer Contact Centre (CCC) Mondays -Thursdays, E-mail: [email protected], Tel: 07964 974386.

Cardiff and Vale Carers Support and Information Network Group (CSING) Summary of meeting held on 19th July 2018 CSING brings together staff from front line services for unpaid carers in health, social care and the third sector. Anyone who works with carers, or is interested in issues affecting carers, can join. CSING discussion on current services A discussion took place regarding current services for carers in Cardiff & the Vale on:

What is working well? What needs to be improved? Where are the gaps and how can we address them?

What is working well?

Good links/relationship to Counsellor at Crossroads for group counselling Engagement with carers when supporting with grants – opportunities to signpost to

other organisations (could be resource/capacity issue for organisations) Carers Trust SEW can provide small grants to carers Parents Federation run social gatherings for carers (Connected Carers project) Hafal share office space with Vale Council staff – useful for sharing information Vale Council can offer ‘one off’ therapies and access to a Carers Support Fund (CSF)

following a carer’s assessment. Both the ‘taster’ therapies and CSF are to meet needs identified in the carer’s assessment, i.e. stress for therapies and CSF for a need that cannot be met in any other way, e.g. help for the carer to buy a tumble dryer if they are looking after someone doubly incontinent. (However, difficulties can arise when there is a long term issue). Cardiff do not offer this service

What needs to be improved?

Carers are fed up with consultations, want action and hands on support Consultations – nothing seems to happen as a result of the many consultations Both Cardiff & Vale have seen an increase in assessments - no time to do any follow ups IT systems are not compatible and third sector cannot always access statutory

systems, even if they are co-located Development of Carers Centre Benefits advice/form filling for carers and help with appeals Support for people who want to stay in the workplace Therapies/CSF for people with long term issues (see ‘What is working well’ above) Resource/Capacity issues for organisations that are being signposted to (see ‘What is

working well’ above) Where are the gaps and how can we address them?

Difficulty accessing respite care – specialist and emergency No respite for those cared for with mental health issues If a carer is hospitalised, who looks after the person being cared for? Forms on hospital wards do not currently ask after carers health and wellbeing, it was

felt that there is a need to capture this information – John’s Campaign was mentioned

A new Advocacy Service for Cardiff & Vale ProMo-Cymru has developed a new advocacy service pathway and delivery model for Cardiff and the Vale. It offers support to citizens in receipt of social care and support services. Cardiff and Vale Advocacy Gateway (CVAG) has been developed to support the citizens of Cardiff and Vale so that they have a voice and a choice when it comes to social care support services, particularly as defined by the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act (2014). Introducing CVAG The service offers a telephone helpline to residents aged over 18 who may need help to have their views heard, be in control and/or understand their options in relation to services they are receiving, or think they may need, around social care support. Carers and practitioners can also contact the service if they have any concerns about an individual who receives the above. “Our expertise in developing and delivering online and digital information, advice,

It is staffed by a highly skilled professional team of Helpline Advisor Advocates. How CVAG helps The Helpline Team can help:

Establish what matters and is important to the caller. Make sense of their situation and their needs. Explore options regarding any identified social care/support needs.

Reach the most appropriate destination as quickly and efficiently as possible, whether through direct representation or referral/signposting to face to face independent professional advocacy, other advocacy, or other support services.

The benefits The Cardiff and Vale Advocacy Gateway model and pathway are unique; in addition to helping the individual concerned, there are other benefits too:

Vale for Africa Congratulates Scholarship Student Batholomew Local charity Vale for Africa welcomed the good news that their very first scholarship student has graduated with honours. Batholomew Gavannah arrived at UWC Atlantic College, St Donats, in 2011, from his home in Tororo, Uganda, which is Vale for Africa’s link community. After studying at Atlantic College for two years, Batholomew went on to the University of Florida. He recently graduated with honours with a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering, and is now planning to pursue a PhD in chemical engineering at the University of Virginia. Vale for Africa Chair, Gareth Kiddie said, “We are very proud of Batholomew, who has achieved so much since he first came to us seven years ago. We are a small charity, and the scholarship is one of our most important projects. I’d like to thank Atlantic College for making it possible, and all our other partners and supporters, both here in Wales and in Uganda. Very best wishes to Batholomew for his future, from all of us here at Vale for Africa.”

VYF - A voice for young people in the Vale The Vale Youth Forum (VYF) is a registered charity which has been in existence for more than 30 years. It aims to ensure that the voices of young people aged 11 to 24 years of age are heard by all those who make decisions which affect them. Members of the forum are drawn from all across the Vale, some from youth groups and schools, others who are just interested in giving young people a voice. Members are supported by a Board of Trustees. The Vale of Glamorgan Youth Cabinet and the Youth Mayor are all members of the Youth Forum; several of our members will be standing in the Welsh Youth Parliament elections and we have a member at the UK Youth Parliament. The Youth Forum meets monthly on a Monday evening at the Civic Offices in Barry with some additional meetings for working groups in between. The voices of young people can be powerful. There are so many issues that affect the lives of young people and it is important that their views are heard, especially in these times of austerity when the views of young people can be overlooked. The Youth Forum provides the opportunity for young people to speak up. The Youth Forum especially welcomes young people from voluntary groups or any others who have an interest in young people’s rights. For further information on the work of the forum e-mail: [email protected] call 07526 449720 or find us on Facebook: ValeYouthForum.
