Mark you calendar for the Annual Spring Fling on May 1. The details have yet to be determined but we do know the fabulous Old Time Fiddlers will be there to entertain us. This is a fundraising event for Forest Glen and will feature a Sweet & Savoury Auction. Come out for some toe-tapping fun and to show your support to our seniors.

BC Senior's Week is June 7-13 and we will be kicking it off on June 6 with our Third Annual Senior's Sunday BBQ at Big Beach. Everyone is welcome to join the tenants of Forest Glen from 12-2 for some free food, games of croquet and bocce, and visiting. This event is sponsored by Seaview Seniors Housing Society and the District of Ucluelet.

We are planning to take Senior's Week on the road this year with a fun-filled trip to LAS VEGAS. Leaving June 7 and re-turning on the 12th, we will take in many of the sites Vegas has to offer including: the Vegas Strip, Freemont Street, Grand Canyon, outlet shopping, and whatever else comes to mind. Prices will depend on local airline rates at the time of booking. The sooner we book, the less expensive it will be!

Growing vegetables is a new trend for back-yard gardeners. FULL CIRCLE: How to Grow Winter-harvest Vegetables is a course developed by Carol McIntyre that offers novice and experienced gardeners hands-on methods for

growing vegetables that will stand in the garden all winter, providing nutritious organic choices from October to April-May with no weeding, no watering, and no insect control all winter long.

Carol guides participants in choosing and ordering seeds, planning and developing the garden site, knowing what to plant, when and how, and learning simple but effective methods to nurture and protect plants, as well as how

to save seed for future seasons. Gardeners benefit from time and support between sessions to adapt ideas to their unique needs and settings.

FULL CIRCLE begins in January 2010, continuing in spring, early summer, and early fall. “When learning trans-lates into doing in real time, gardeners work with the seasons while developing the most important skill of all: trusting their experience and intuition in their own garden. My course is designed to facilitate that process.”

“Winter produce often comes from great distances, reducing nutritional value at considerable expense to the con-sumer and to our planet due to costs of packaging, transportation, and storage.

Eating locally in season is good for us and for the planet.

West Coast Cooking: A Unique Food Experience

Bobby Lax moved across the country to Tofino, B.C. five years ago where he began an unconventional culinary path working on a gourmet food truck. Cooking directly under the watchful eye of CIA grad Lisa Ahier at SoBo, he had the privilege of working with some of B.C.'s best ingredients while in a very fun environment. Bobby's desire to work with new fresh and regional prod-ucts then led him to the Bounti-ful Okanagan where he found Cameron Smith and Dana Ewart of Joy Road Catering. Twice a week they would cook an alfresco five course dinner for up to thirty people at one long table, overlooking a vine-yard. This spring and summer he will split his time between teaching cooking classes, working on an oyster farm, help-ing out with the newly formed Ucluelet and Tofino Culinary Guild and cooking for friends at any given opportunity.

Cooking classes in this series will take place in the UCC Kitchen and will cost $40 + GST/class.

Introducing the new

Ucluelet Community Centre!!Welcome message from Abby & Recreation Ucluelet -

It is with great pride and excitement that we open the Ucluelet Community Centre and welcome the community to a new era of recreation in Ucluelet.

With the opening of the new Ucluelet Community Centre we will be providing many recreation and cultural opportunities for the citizens of Ucluelet and the surrounding area. Please take advantage of the many aspects of the Ucluelet Community Centre including the Vancouver Island Regional Library; Westcoast Community Resources Society offering family support services; activity, arts and crafts and dance/fitness rooms offering classes for all ages; youth room for ages 13 to 18; the Main Hall for per-formances and gatherings and the Community Room hosting movies, council meet-ings, lecture series’ and community forums.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those people who were instrumental in creating and building the Ucluelet Community Centre over the past seventeen years. We could not have done it without you. I especially want to thank the Ucluelet Recreation Commission and my Parks and Recreation team -

Samantha McDougall. Sam is our new Recreation Assistant. Sam will be the smiling face at the front reception area to assist you. Sam brings to the position many years of cus-tomer service along with a tourism background. We are very excited to have Sam as our latest addition to the team.

KK Hodder. KK was promoted to Recreation Programmer this past fall. KK continues to facilitate programs and special events and produce your recreation guide. Please contact KK if there is a program that you would like to see happen or can instruct yourself. Wanda McAvoy. Wanda is a long time District employee and recently has taken the role of Parks Project Coordinator. Among other things, Wanda will be heading up the beautification plan for the gardens, parks and playgrounds around Ucluelet.

I remain in my position of Recreation Director for the District. I am looking forward to the next few years with Recreation Ucluelet as we continue to expand Parks & Recreation Services to the community and beyond.

Together we will continue to . . . “ positively affect the overall health and well being of the community by providing the best in Recreation and Parks services to the residents

of the District of Ucluelet.”Abby Fortune

Director of Recreation
