Overview

The Recovery Simulator is a tool used to test the integrity of Disaster Recovery backups made withEMC Avamar, EMC NetWorker, CommVault Simpana or IBM Tivoli Storage Manager in conjunctionwith Cristie ABMR/NBMR/SBMR/TBMR Windows 7.1.2 and later and Cristie ABMR/NBMR/TBMRLinux 7.1.2 and later. It does this by running an automated restore of the backup to one of thesupported virtual environments VMware vSphere, vCloud and Microsoft Hyper-V.

Current limitations

i) To run the Recovery Simulator on Windows 2008, 2008R2, 2012 or 2012R2 Core start aCommand dialogue and enter the command "java -jar RecoverySimulator.jar" where thedefault folder is the product installation folder, typically "C:\ProgramFiles\Cristie\RecoverySimulator".

ii) IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) backupset recovery simulations are not supported. However image backups are.

iii) IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) encrypted backups are not supported.

iv) EMC NetWorker encrypted backups are not supported. However password protectedbackups are.

v) Post-boot script support for Linux test systems is only available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux6 and Suse Linux Enterprise Standard 11 distributions.

vi) When running EMC Avamar based simulations on Windows or Linux systems the hardwaremust be pre-configured in the target VM as RS cannot access the backup at this time.

vii) When running EMC NetWorker based simulations there may be an IP address conflict withthe original source machine if it is currently active.

viii) If you opt to boot a restored VM there may be an IP address conflict with the original sourcemachine if it is currently active. Please change the VM's hostname and IP address using Advanced Configuration before you start the simulation test if this is likely to occur.

ix) It is only possible to support a single CommVault Simpana server with this release.

x) For CommVault Simpana simulation tests only, it is not possible to setup several clients fortest on a single schedule as a 'batch'.

xi) There is no Recovery Simulator/SBMR support for Linux. SBMR Linux is not currently part ofthe Cristie Software Ltd. product portfolio.

Requirements

i) Only supports EMC Avamar, EMC NetWorker, CommVault Simpana or IBM Tivoli StorageManager backups configured to use Cristie ABMR/NBMR/SBMR/TBMR Windows 7.1.2 andlater and Cristie ABMR/NBMR/TBMR Linux 7.1.2 and later.

ii) Supported virtual environments are VMware vSphere, vCloud and Microsoft Hyper-V.

iii) The Recovery Simulator can be hosted on Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, Server 2003, Server2008 (including R2) and Server 2012 (also including R2). Both 32 and 64-bit versions aresupported where applicable.

iv) The Recovery Simulator can test recoveries of any Windows OS supported by Cristie ABMR/NBMR/SBMR/TBMR Windows 7.1.2 and later.

v) The Recovery Simulator can test recoveries of any Linux OS supported by Cristie ABMR/NBMR/TBMR Linux 7.1.2 and later.

vi) If Oracle JRE v1.7 is not detected on the host system, it will be installed automatically duringinstallation.

vii) To support IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) recovery simulations the IBM Tivoli StorageManager (TSM) Administrator client and Backup-Archive client must be installed. Similarly tosupport EMC NetWorker simulations, an appropriate EMC NetWorker backup client must beinstalled and to support EMC Avamar simulations, an appropriate EMC Avamar client must beinstalled. To support CommVault Simpana simulations, an appropriate CommVault Simpanaclient must be installed. Note that at least one of these clients must be installed prior toinstalling Recovery Simulator or it will not be possible to install.

Refer to the Cristie ABMR/NBMR/SBMR/TBMR Windows 7.1.2 and later and Cristie ABMR/NBMR/TBMR Linux 7.1.2 and later product documentation for an exact list of supportedbackup product client/server versions. Cristie Software Ltd. recommends using the IBM TivoliStorage Manager (TSM) client version 6.4.0.x (minimum version 6.2.0.0), the EMCNetWorker 8.1 client (as a minimum use a version to match the version of the EMCNetWorker server containing the backups used for simulation tests) and the EMC Avamarclient version 6.1.101 (minimum version 6.0.100). For CommVault Simpana support use aclient version to match the version of the CommVault Simpana server containing the backupsused for simulation tests.

viii) About 64 MB of free disk space is required to install the Recovery Simulator package.

ix) The Recovery Simulator needs certain TCP/UDP ports to be added as exceptions to the

6

system firewall if active. This will be done as part of the Recovery Simulator installationprocess.

x) A minimum of 1GB RAM size is required on the test VM for recovery to be successful.

Known Issues

i) It is not possible to specify external drives (e.g. USB disks) for loading drivers duringdissimilar hardware preparation.

Version 2.3

Enhancements

i) Added recovery simulation support for CommVault Simpana backups created in conjunctionwith Cristie SBMR for Windows.

ii) The separate Schedules and Status tabs in the the main console GUI have been merged intoa single window to simplify the interface.

iii) One of the supported ABMR, NBMR, SBMR or TBMR Cristie products must be selected atinstall time. This is now mandatory. The installation will detect which product backup client(s)are installed and only offer the corresponding BMR product(s) in the selection list. Normallyonly one backup product will be installed so only one BMR product will be pre-selected whichis fixed.

iv) Added the ability to run post-boot scripts after a successful simulation for Linux test systems. This can be used to run Customer specific tests. Note only supports RHEL6 SLES 11

v) A tick-box is provided on the final installation wizard page to run the Recovery Simulatorconsole immediately on exit.

vi) When a new ISO is uploaded to one of the VMware vSphere, vCloud and Microsoft Hyper-Vservers it is now automatically selected by default.

vii)The default RAM size setting for a target VM is now 2 GB (it was 1 GB before).

Bug Fixes

i) It is now possible to upload ISOs to Microsoft Hyper-V servers.

ii) No longer adds the Time Zone offset for Point-in-Time (PIT) simulation test.

iii) It is no longer possible to create a schedule having multiple instances of the same source/target pairing.

iv) When uploading an ISO the Event Log now includes the target destination path.

v) It is no longer possible to select a 32-bit (x86) architecture when using the Advancedschedule setup feature for Windows 2008R2, 2012 and 2012R2 OS's.

vi) Fixed the text truncation on the "Retrieve Details" dialogue when scanning the configuration ofa EMC Avamar, EMC NetWorker, CommVault Simpana or IBM Tivoli Storage Manager server. The progress bar display has also been corrected.

iv) Added the ability to run post-boot scripts after a successful simulation for Windows testsystems. This can be used to run Customer specific tests.

v) Added general usability improvements to the Recovery Simulator User interface.

vi) A Hypervisor server can now be defined by hostname instead of IP Address.

vii) Added the ability to select automatic reboot or leave a VM in place but unbooted after asimulation test.

viii) Now prevents a simulation running while the source system is being backed up.

ix) Now allows a TSM admin console to be used on a different communications port to the BAclient.

x) An entry to the Recovery Simulator Event Log is made and an on-screen warning displayedwhen the available token count is low (less than 10).

xi) Added the ability to run a schedule on the last day of each month.

xii) Now shows the amount of free space available on Hypervisor data-stores.

xiii) Added a VM power off/deleted status check when selecting the refresh option in the status/schedule tabs of the RS Console interface.
