SEATTLE RECORDER SOCIETY September 2016 Vol. XLVIII, No. 1 www.seattle-recorder.org Recorder Notes SRS Meeting Friday, September 16th, 2016 @ 7:30 pm Playing Session (Vicki Boeckman) Music of Scandinavia: Sibelius and Grieg All sizes of recorders from soprano to contrabass are needed, and viols are always welcome. From the Music Director (Vicki Boeckman) Greetings, Everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful summer. I recently returned from a month in Denmark and Iceland and am eager to embark on my second season as your music director. This will also be the second season that meetings start up in September. In order to avoid Labor Day weekend and the weekend of Nancy Gorbman's unique Kyuquot workshop we agreed to start on the third Friday of the month which is a bit unusual, so I hope to see you all there on the 16th. The warmth and hospitality of the Icelandic people along with lingering sunsets at 11:30 pm made a lasting impression. I am filled with fond memories and influences from the northern climes and have planned an evening of beautiful Scandinavian music by Jean Sibelius and Edvard Grieg for our September playing session. I will be leading the entire group and have chosen music that will work well for all levels. There will not be a Backroom Gang, but Miyo Aoki will be on standby to buddy up if anyone needs extra support. We will start with Sibelius' magnificent Andante Festivo, originally scored for string quartet in 1922, then later rescored for string orchestra and timpani in 1938. I heard a recording of Andante Festivo on King FM while driving to Portland last spring and instantly fell in love with it and envisioned it working well for recorder ensemble. I immediately called Charles to express my enthusiasm and, lo and behold, within a week he made the beautiful arrangement that we will play! Thank you, Charles! Then we will play Grieg's “Våren,” (“Last Spring”) a hauntingly beautiful piece originally for voice and piano in a lovely 6-part transcription by Eric Haas. I recently connected with the Japanese recorder player and arranger Papalin, who seems to be as much in love with Grieg's music as I, so we will play some of his tran- scriptions from the fabulous Opus 17. I look forward to seeing you soon. Please feel free to contact me with any thoughts, comments, or musical requests that you may have, or if you would like a pdf file of the music we will play. Please specify for what size instrument. [email protected]
