History of Les Clefs d’OrIn 12th Century France, the “compte des cierges” (“keeper

of the candles”) served in the grand palaces and castles as the gatekeeper or head of the staff, who held the keys for the house. He greeted a palace’s visiting nobility as they arrived, and catered to their every whim. In the grand hotels of Europe, the idea of a “Concierge” survived through the centuries as the palaces evolved into hotels and as the “tourism” industry developed.

In 1929 the legendary Parisian Concierge Ferdinand Gillet called together his counterparts across Europe to discuss ways they could co-operate to serve their guests. The Les Clefs d’Or (“keys of gold”) society was founded on the principals of integrity, friendship and professionalism, and the members adopted the golden keys to symbolise the opening of doors for their guests. Today members are recognised by the Crossed Golden Key lapel pins, worn on their jackets, while on duty at the Concierge desk. Today, this organisation has spread to 40 nations and comprises more than 3500 members worldwide. The spirit of this network is embodied in the credo, “In Service through Friendship.”

Zealand. The role of the Society is to support the members, providing a network of experienced professionals to enable them to perform as outstanding Concierges throughout the country.

We provide travel and training opportunities, professional resources and a knowledge base, the benefit of the members’ combined contacts and experience, essentially pooling the resources of a close network of established industry professionals to provide our guests with the highest possible standard of service our country has to offer. The Third Annual Les Clefs d’Or Ball was a held at the Hilton Auckland on the 2nd of October 2010. The Masquerade themed night was a chance for the Les Clefs d’Or colleagues and suppliers to have some fun for a good cause, and was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. Proceeds of the ball raffle sales went to the Breast Cancer Foundation and the Christchurch Earthquake Fund.

We are so excited about the Rugby World Cup 2011 that is being held in New Zealand commencing on September the 9th 2011(New Zealand vs Tonga) in Auckland, that myself and our Magazine Mascot – Rocco, decided we should give you a taste of some of the clothing on offer. This is us outside the Rugby World Cup Clothing Store in the Viaduct Harbour in Auckland, we got quite a few stares during this photoshoot!

For this Summer edition we are celebrating the outdoors and the ability that New Zealand presents for anyone to try anything. Having recently taken up boxing after having no sporting hobby (other than the occasional business round of golf) for the last 20 years, I realised that if you find that one thing, that keeps you interested, motivated, fit and happy, you are much better off all round as a person. This Summer season presents many opportunities for you to get out there into our Great Outdoors and try anything you desire, as we offer some of the best Golf Courses in the World, fantastic Sailing and Boating opportunities, world renowned walking tracks, superb rafting, scenic kayaking, sand boarding or just exploring. We encourage you to get out there, meet the locals in our rural

A visit to New Zealand wouldn’t be complete without some time spent out and about on this island nation’s beautiful waters. Named after a grade of almost flawless diamond, VvS1 is a New Zealand superyacht that stands out amongst the crowd.

A frequent visitor to Auckland Harbour’s Viaduct, VvS1 - just like its namesake - it is perfectly finished with a shark gray hull, complementary metallic silver superstructure and perfectionist-pleasing clean interior lines.

In 2008 VvS1 won the World Superyacht Award in Venice, Italy before being awarded no less than three trophies from the World Yacht Awards in Cannes, France. Winning the categories of ‘Best Motor Yacht’, ‘Best Interior’ and ‘Best Functionality’, Michael Hill’s 34m superyacht VvS1 is quite possibly the best superyacht to ever come out of New Zealand.

Owners Michael and Christine Hill are already known for their style and design flair via their international jewellery brand ‘Michael Hill’ and award winning 18 hole golf course ‘The Hills’ in Arrowtown. “Having had the opportunity to include so much of our own personal input in the interior design of the boat, Christine and I are incredibly honoured by the continual international recognition awarded to VvS1,” says VvS1 Owner Michael Hill.

“We’re extremely proud of our boat and it's representation of Kiwi thought, design and know-how across the world’s oceans.”

onboard took lean edges and soft colours to offset the exterior lines of the boat. Its immaculate standards of construction are testament to high seas all over the world.

“VvS1 is all about making the desirable accessible. It is my favourite hideaway and specifically built to experience The Pacific in a unique way,” says Hill. “Building VvS1 was like a dream come true. The design is outside the square as it breaks traditional thinking in layout and shape, yet it is practical and functional and seems to give the impressions of masculine ruggedness.”

With a maximum speed of 13 knots and a range of 4300 nautical miles this internationally renowned yacht is able to take its owners or chartered guests almost anywhere they desire.

I never really paid much attention to my Auckland friends when they told me they were off to the Coromandel for the weekend, but this all changed when I was invited by Alex Morcom to check out his Lodge “Shakespeare Cliff” at Cooks Beach. It was timely as I needed some time out from ‘the big city’. On the way I thought I would check out Hot Water Beach which is famous for it’s hot spring, which reveals itself when you dig into the beautiful white sands, you can rent yourself a spade at the local Hot Water Beach Store for $5 or take one with you, and sit in your own spa pool/hot spring. The facilities and experience at Hot Water Beach are fantastic with one of New Zealand’s best art galleries Moko offering pieces for you to ship home without having to lug them around New Zealand from $5 to $5000, this art gallery is without doubt a passion for the enthusiastic owners Simon and Sonya. My favourite pieces were the glass sculptures by Seike Torige who resides in Bali some of which weigh in excess of 1000 kilos and measure up to 40 metres in length – these are coveted by collectors worldwide. How some of this art ever makes it to Hot Water Beach unharmed is beyond belief! After checking out Moko I wandered to the beach where I met Tim, owner of the local Surf school, he had just put some bait on his line and cast out off the rocks at Hot Water Beach and caught a 10lb snapper! Highlights at Hot Water Beach is the wonderful Coffee and garden setting at Hot Waves Cafe, Moko Artspace and the surf breaks (they have both a beach break and a reef break). Heading towards my

weekend destination, I stopped in at Ha Hei for a quick wander down to Cathedral Cove – this was an easy walk and if you get puffed coming back up the hill from the Cove, I suggest spending time standing still listening to the native birds singing – absolutely beautiful! On my way to Cooks Beach there was a sign that said Winery... but when I pulled into Purangi Winery I thought the worst, ramshackled and bohemian in nature... nevertheless six shot glasses with fruit wine were immediately placed in front of me (even though I was there to dine not to drink), the owners son Daniel then rattled off six different accents without pausing for a breath along with 20 jokes, and before you knew it a wood fired pizza appeared, this was like stand up comedy... but better, a grass roots New Zealand experience like no other!

To the luxury lodge I went after my fruit wine experience, dropping into Mercury Bay Estate Vineyard on the way for a quick tasting (their Pinot Noir Rose - was very good so I collected a bottle) and off I went next door to Shakespeare Cliff Lodge with great expectations. On arrival I was greeted by Alex the owner, who showed me around, right from the word go it was like arriving at home, although far more palatial than mine. The fine wine was immediately served along with home made quince jelly with blue cheese and Spanish olives in front of the roaring fireplace. After a night of complete and utter indulgence I headed out the next morning with the Lodges fishing equipment to track down my own snapper. Standing on the gorgeous coastline at Cooks Beach, a

couple of locals wander up to me on the beach and tell me I am in the wrong spot and send me to a better location for hooking the big one with my surf caster, not only that, the sun had come out, and I knew I was going to get sunburnt, I mentioned this to the locals, and one of the woman lent me her hat, (I thought that this gesture of generosity showcased the kindness and friendliness of the locals) then after no luck I headed over to Front Beach... oh what a paradise, I fished for about another half hour there before another local showed up and then the fun really started, he took the time to teach me a few tricks (thanks Pete!) culminating in many bites and a couple of Kahawai landed on the beach. After seven hours of thinking nothing but fish and gorgeous scenery, I realised that in less than 24 hours on the Coromandel I was more relaxed and happy than I had been after 4 days in Fiji! Back to the lodge I went, I ran a bath opening the bath to ceiling window, soaking off the hard work of the day while soaking in the views over Mercury Bay. This was absolute paradise, the people, the seafood, the wine, if you come to New Zealand or live in New Zealand and don’t at least once a year spend 2 to 3 nights in this area of the Coromandel, you are definitely missing out! Editor's Note: I didn't get time to pop into my favourite thermal pools in New Zealand at Whitianga, but we definitely recommend you try it – it is like walking into another world. Lie with a cocktail beside these gorgeous thermal pools or try a massage at The Lost Spring with exceptional dining. This is a 5 star experience.

The experience of hiking in New Zealand is as varied as the country is long. Probably one of the most well known tracks in New Zealand and the world, is the Milford Track in Fiordland National Park.

The walk has been widely described as ‘the finest walk in the world’ – a quote attributed to British poet Blanche Baughan who wrote about walking in New Zealand in the early 20th Century.

The beauty of New Zealand’s National Parks is that you can still have the experience of an untouched world. Blanche Baughan and her colleagues walking in the 1900’s though, may have appreciated the benefit of warm showers and hot meals along the way.

Ultimate Hikes is the only company permitted to operate multi day guided walks on the Milford and Routeburn Tracks, located in the Otago/Southland region of New Zealand. The argument over which is the better experience, the Milford or the Routeburn, has been going on since the tracks were forged – and every walker, independent or guided, will have a different opinion. However, Ultimate Hikes clients will all agree that the level of comfort cannot be overlooked when choosing to do a guided multi-day walk on either Track.

Jimi Williams, a three season veteran, both guide and lodge manager, on the Milford Track Guided Walk keeps coming back because “you can never tire of the beauty”. He can also vouch for the reactions of walkers new to the Track, when they reach

the first lodge, Glade House. “On the first day, we take the group on a nature walk of about an hour and a half to give them a taste of what they will see over the next four days, - they are always blown away by the scenery” Jimi says. “It gives us a chance to explain a few things, as over the next four days, it is completely up to the walkers how much or how little guidance or assistance they will require whilst on the track.

It’s possible to go a whole day without seeing another soul – especially as the Milford is a one way track. There are only ever 90 people on a section of track on one day, and while we are always looking out for your safety, we try to be non-intrusive but ever present in case you have a question or need some help along the way”.

Each afternoon walkers arrive at a beautiful, subtly appointed lodge, where lodge staff have a refreshing drink ready, and walkers can sink into the pleasure of a rest, and a hot shower. The guides are multi skilled and can attend to sore feet, and other small ailments. They also serve the three course dinner cooked on site by the lodge staff. There is no squabbling over gas rings, or weary shoulders from heavy packs full of equipment, just a cool glass of wine or beer and great company in comfortable surroundings.

What is your favourite New Zealand café? I can’t decide between Alphabet in Parnell and Urban in Newmarket. I love both and visit regularly. On weekends I enjoy the Takapuna Beach Café.

What is your favourite weekend escape New Zealand destination? My Beach house at Omaha – Sanctuary, Tranquility, Peace, Ocean, Sand. Bliss!

What are your favourite Kiwi bands/musicians? Gin Wigmore – she rocks. What a voice!

What is your favourite colour to wear? I love all colours but most days find me in black. Although I have to admit pink really is my favourite.

Where do you get your design inspiration? Many things in life inspire me – travel, movies, museums, vintage clothes and inspirational women for a start.

What is the best perk in being a designer? Travel, Shopping, Shoes, Makeup – all the obvious ones!

What trends do you see being big for summer 2011? Dreamy colours, floaty dresses, clashing prints… Anything with an element of fierce pretty.

What is your favourite New Zealand café? Bambina in Ponsonby Road. They know what I like, so I don’t even have to order, they just get it for me.

What is your favourite weekend escape New Zealand destination? Arrowtown. Absolutely love the place. It is like going back in time, with the little churches, streets, autumnal leaves, just get me there now.

What are your favourite Kiwi bands/musicians? Dave Dobbyn – what a nice guy.

What is your favourite colour to wear? Navy blue – always has been, always will be.

Where do you get your design inspiration? Everything around me.

What is your favourite New Zealand café? New Zealand has a fabulous number of high quality cafes and I don’t want to single one out. When in Wellington I like to eat at Pravda. (I love coffee at home from our ancient brass and copper Pavoni.)

What is your favourite weekend escape New Zealand destination? Nelson would be great but closer to home Waiheke – fabulous beaches, vineyards, cafes, interesting people and art community.

What are your favourite Kiwi bands/musicians? Dave Dobbyn, the Finn family, Bic Runga and the entire APO.

What is your favourite colour to wear? I always default to black and neutrals like grey and taupe – they’re sophisticated and easy but I also love the blues from indigo through to azure and duck egg.

Where do you get your design inspiration? From architecture and paintings. I’m always visiting museums and galleries when I’m overseas. As Brand Ambassador for Innovative Travel’s Ancient Kingdoms I soak up extraordinary details and colour combinations in exotic locations. My recent

visit to Iran has inspired Persian carpet colours and a bright lemon yellow as used in the tiles in Esfahan. All my fabrics are dyed to my own specifications so building a colour palette each season is hugely satisfying.

What is the best perk in being a designer? That I love what I do – to travel and absorb inspiration, choose fabrics and colours and be able to express my creativity through which I can actually earn a living.

What trends do you see being big for summer 2011? Trends for Summer 2011 will also evolve into Winter 2011. Influence from the 50’s and 60’s, pencil skirts, dresses, a new elegance with beautiful sculpting of fabrics, minimalism and simplicity.

What is your favourite place in New Zealand for a Holiday? Whangamata – I holidayed there with my parents all through my childhood and really enjoyed the relaxing times we had at the beach.

If you had one week in life where you could do anything in the world what would it be? To be honest with the amount of travelling I do I would really prefer to spend a week at home with my wife and kids.

If you had to recommend to an International Visitor to do one thing while they were in New Zealand, what would it be? Get to the South Island, its one of the most beautiful places in the world.

What do you do during your downtime / hobbies? Ideally my downtime is spent at home looking after my two children, James (20 months) and Elle (4 months). On tour I’m doing more of the same – looking after Tim Southee (20 years). I also like to find time to follow American baseball and play some golf.

If I were to get you a Christmas present what would you like it to be? Not having to play cricket, or train, on boxing day so I can relax with my family!

What is your favourite drink? Budweiser

What is your favourite New Zealand Band? NZ Hip Hop artist PNC

What is the most unusual thing someone has come up and said to you since you have become a New Zealand Legend? Someone came up to me in the street in Australia and made a Harry Potter reference with expletives wrapped around it. Luckily I don’t get too much of that, but that one was certainly unusual.

What other jobs have you done before? I was fortunate to play cricket for NZ straight after school so I have only ever had that one job. What I do after cricket I have no idea.

Have you ever done a bungy jump? No, haven’t considered doing one either.

What is the Food that you miss the most when you are away from New Zealand? Sushi

What is your favourite café, bar or restaurant in the World? No 5 in Auckland, it’s where I got married so it holds very special memories.

Puzzle & Recipe

Start by making the pastry. Combine the flour, salt and baking powder in a bowl. Mix in the grated butter and work a little with your fingertips until the mixture resembles rough crumbs. Then add the water, mixing just until a soft dough is formed. Place a large sheet of baking paper on the bench and tip the dough onto this, pressing it together with your hands. Place another sheet of baking paper over the dough and roll the pastry out with a rolling pin into a circle approx 35cm in diameter. Transfer to a baking tray and chill for at least 10 minutes or until ready to assemble. Chilling pastry prevents shrinking during cooking. Preheat oven to 200˚C. Take your pastry base from the fridge and remove the top layer of baking paper. Spread the Caramelised Onions over the top of the pastry, leaving a 4cm border around the edge. Crumble the feta over the top and sprinkle with thyme. Fold the pastry edges in towards the centre to partially enclose the filling, then pleat in little folds to make a pastry border. Bake for 15 minutes then reduce heat to 180˚C for a further 35-40 minutes until golden and crisp. Serve hot accompanied by green salad.

Lakes District Museum presents Graham Brinsley: 30 years Retrospective and New Works, running until February the 6th 2011

Graham Brinsley was born in 1963 and raised both in Dunedin and Invercargill. The southern scenery was an endless inspiration for his painting from an early age. After schooling at Southland Boys High, he began a BA at Otago University, painting in the evenings and holidays. By the third year art won over the studies, and he has painted full time ever since. Most years he paints around Europe, more recently exhibiting in Ireland. His Studio and Gallery is situated near Arrowtown, sign posted on 523 Speargrass Flat Road off the Arrowtown – Lake Hayes Road.

Rotorua – When explaining the appeal of this region, people like to talk of five spirits. You can feel the spirit of the earth, as it rumbles beneath your feet and escapes, hissing, through fumaroles and geysers. You can witness the spirit of Maori culture at Te Puia, with authentic performance experiences. Soaking in a natural hot spring can rejuvenate your spirit. We recommend a Hukafalls Jet Boat ride - approximately 30 minutes, during which time you travel to the base of the Huka Falls and past the Aratiatia Dam. Here you will see one of the great natural wonders of the world in action!

SPOTLIGHT ON Blenheim – by Sarah Watt

I had travelled on the road for 10 hours before arriving at my destination, The Marlborough Vintners Hotel, which is nestled amongst vineyards in the heart of wine country.

Allan Scott and Cloudy Bay Wineries are just down the road; Mudhouse, Villa Maria and Wither Hills are across the way. On arrival at the Hotel I was greeted by welcoming staff who informed me I’d be sampling the 5-course degustation menu that evening. The MVH is an exceptional hotel – their suites are self-contained and luxurious, with every need or desire being met. I anxiously arrived in the dining room as I was a little daunted eating on my own, but my solo dinner was treated with the utmost care and attention, with the General Manager ensuring my table had a view of the terrace, it was beautiful, a petanque pit, the kitchen garden’s scarecrow and vineyards as far as the eye could see. Hayley, my charmingly chatty waitress from Colorado, explained the wine match chosen for each course, and I enjoyed a delicious, well-paced two hours of top-class cuisine. Kicking off with a goats cheese mousse, then the hot smoked salmon which was exquisite, followed by blue cod wrapped in bacon, and to finish a rack of lamb. I forced myself to endure and enjoy the three mini desserts matched with a superb Forrest Estate Late Harvest Riesling. After a tranquil night’s sleep, I woke early as the sun rose over the vines in utter solitude.

At 10am my day of excursions began – Marlborough Travel’s personable guide Aussie (named for obvious reasons) took our group to a handful of cellar doors for wine-tasting. I was immediately converted to dry Rieslings at Wairau River, then enjoyed a wide sample of varietals at Framingham’s. We finished at Seresin, whose praises had been sung by Hayley from Colorado given Seresin’s dedication to organic, biodynamic and hand-picked farming methods. After a delicious bite to eat, Aussie guided us on to Marlborough Travel’s 50ft launch and we embarked on a Greenshell Mussel Cruise into Pelorus Sound. Aussie gave us a history of the Sounds, before taking us to a mussel farm where we anchored, learned everything there is to know about mussel farming, and then enjoyed a hearty feast of freshly steamed mussels, washed down with one of the many famous Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc’s. The sun shone for us, there was a cool breeze, and the peace and quiet of the Sounds lulled us near to sleep as we headed back to the marina. SPOTLIGHT ON Lake Tekapo – by Sarah Watt

It was the perfect October weather for driving, sunny yet cool, and the beauty of the South Island’s scenery proved almost too distracting as I headed north towards Lake Tekapo. Despite being born and raised a New Zealander, this countryside never ceases to leave me speechless. Like its relative, Lake Pukaki, Lake Tekapo boasts the purest of turquoise waters caused by finely ground rock in the glacial melted waters - set against a snowy mountain backdrop, the real-life landscape surpasses the magic of the tourism posters.

The locals obviously appreciate this natural wonder, and provide various ways for you to take part in the splendour. Head up Mt John to the Earth & Sky Observatory and have a coffee at the Observatory Café which boasts 360 degree views of Lake Tekapo and the surrounding mountains, stick around to watch the sunset change the light and colours of the vast sky, or take part in a night time stargazing show. Alternatively, you can take a jaunt in an Air Safaris plane over Mt Cook and the glaciers. Despite the sunshine we were enjoying in the village, heavy clouds just over the mountain stymied that adventure! (Annabelle and her crew make sure the conditions are just right before taking groups up). Although I missed out on the adventure this time, I am sure to put it on the top of my list for next time!

I notice a little stone Church on the edge of the lake. The Church of the Good Shepherd was built in 1935 and has an enormous altar window in its back wall, overlooking the lake. A perfect wedding venue, although the view could be a little distracting from the main event! I recommend if you are ever at Lake Tekapo to check out this stunning church.

As the early evening sun streamed into my hotel room, I sat on the balcony of my top floor lake view room at Peppers Bluewater Resort, enjoying a gorgeous cheese platter. The

staff here strive to make your Lake Tekapo experience as special as the natural surrounds. The immaculate furnishings and luxurious bathroom welcome you with open arms after a busy day of sightseeing. Dinner is served in Peppers’ own restaurant, or you can pop down to the village, a mere 5 minute walk, and dine at one of the local eateries. Dear friends, welcome to our beautiful New Zealand and to the fifth edition of Recommend New Zealand Magazine, showcasing what makes New Zealand such a fantastic destination. Internationally, UICH Les Clefs d’Or has been organised into geographical zones to aid efficiency and assist with the growth of the organisation worldwide. In 2009, I was honoured to assume the role of Zone Director for Oceania. This comes with the responsibility of fostering closer relationships between the Concierges in Australia and New Zealand.

As an organisation, we are also pooling our resources and initiatives towards 2013, when our Land of the Long White Cloud, Aotearoa, will host the 60th International UICH Les Clefs d’Or Congress in beautiful Queenstown. It will be a great opportunity to not only showcase this sophisticated holiday resort during the five day conference, but also Oceania. I am certain many will take at least two weeks for their travels, which

without a doubt our countries will offer the very best to create an unforgettable

and memorable experience to some of the worlds’ most powerful industry professionals.
