Recognising Success 2013-2014
Farlingaye High School

I n this booklet we have attempted to list all the various
activities and events students were involved in last year. It
shows all their various successes.
It is inevitable that some students may have been missed out
and I apologise profusely for this. They have had an opportunity
to check it, but I know some won’t have remembered to do so!
My sincere thanks to my secretary, Karen Ling, who has collated
all this information and produced the booklet.
Happy reading!

Art
Artist-In-Residence - A-Level
Art, Textiles and Photography Sixth Form students were given the opportunity to work
with visiting artist, Simon Read, an established and successful artist. His current work
includes restructuring the salt marshes and surrounding landscape as well as being a
senior lecturer in Fine Art at Middlesex University. The students spent the day
working on a university project based on re-thinking the use of materials to create
artworks and created temporary sculptures from re-cycled and found materials. These
were then filmed and photographed to map the progress of making. The day was
extremely successful in developing thinking skills, problem-solving strategies and
communication through visual language and team work. Students enjoyed the
experience of sharing expertise, ideas, and working collaboratively to think about
creative use of their immediate environment.
Artist-In-Resident - KS3
Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 were treated to a workshop creating willow sculptures for
the school. They worked in teams and created sculptural drawings to plan their
sculptures and worked with clay maquettes. The students enjoyed developing their
communication and problem-solving skills and working collaboratively with new
techniques.
A-Level Exhibition
Our A-Level students displayed their coursework and exam work for their end of year
exhibition. A superb range of sculptures, textiles, painting and photography that
represented the culmination of a year’s study and development. From textile
honeycomb with felted bees, to floating ceramic sculptures and paper-cut forms, the
work exhibited showed diversity in its range of ideas and techniques. Both staff and
visitors from the local community enjoyed viewing the artwork on our open evening.
Comments from visitors: ‘Amazing variety!’, ‘Very inspiring to see such thoughtful and
original work’, ‘Beautiful imaginative and thought provoking’.
Woolverstone Wing Display
This year we established our Art display cabinet in the Woolverstone Wing at Ipswich
Hospital. We began with a display of canvases, wire drawing, abstract canvases and
photographs. These were the outcomes of our community arts project in support of
Cancer Care. Wire sculptures of leaping fish and birds were installed in the garden to
enhance the pond and seating area. The display was updated with some of the Year 7
students Christmas card competition entries for St Mary’s Church in December. In
January the colourful outcomes from our Key-Stage 3 Fish Project were displayed for
visitors to enjoy. We have had some wonderful feedback from both staff at the
hospital and visitors to the Woolverstone Wing who are delighted with the students’
work.

Dora Love Prize Dora Love, who died in 2011, was a survivor of Stutthof Concentration Camp and a
University of Essex Honorary Graduate. The University have now established a project in
her name and last September 14 Farlingaye students attended a workshop day at the
University of Essex on the events of the Holocaust. The students then worked on a
project back at school entitled ‘Our Journey’. They were invited to present this project
at the University at the Holocaust memorial evening and were highly commended for
their project. Farlingaye also entered the key Stage 5 project with 3 Sixth-Form
students attending a Saturday workshop at University College Suffolk. Their project was
also highly commended at the memorial evening.
The Year 9 students involved were:
Daisy Nash, Jasmine Butcher, Maggie Trethewey, Alice Brown, Grace Cook, Harry
Fricker, Alex Cooke, Christian Wranek, Euan McKenzie, Genevieve Garfield, Taylor
Howell-Langstone, Sam Cottee, Isabel Reed, Beth Scahill, Saskia Wright.
The Sixth-Form students involved were:

Third Reich Trip During the February Half-Term, 45 students and 5 members of staff set off on the
History Third Reich ‘Uncovered’ Tour. During the ten day trip we visited Nuremburg,
Prague, Krakow and Berlin taking in a number of sites which related to the horrific
events of the Holocaust. These sites included Auschwitz, with both staff and students
finding this a difficult experience with the scale of the events becoming a reality. The
trip also took in the Bundestag in Berlin which allowed us all a brilliant view of the night-
time skyline of Berlin.
Students involved were: Poppy Barter, Flora Beagley, Lydia Green, John Miller, Miriam
Miller, Aaron Skates, Connor Warne, Jessica Phillips, Adele Lemke, Elspeth Orme, Tessa
