More like a recipe for success. The launch of the second series of MasterChef Australia, featuring judges Gary Mehigan, George Calombaris and Matt Preston has already proved a ratings winner for Channel 10. ‘‘We want to make MasterChef the best food show in the world,’’ Preston (pictured) says. ‘‘We want to ramp it up to another level.’’ One way of doing that is the team of big-name chefs appearing. Producers say the success of last year’s series helped them land Neil Perry, Tony Bilson, Guillaume Brahimi and Tetsuya Wakuda. All agreed to be guest judges this year after turning down roles last year. Another ingredient that could work in MasterChef’s favour is the improved ability of the amateurs. Some of the contestants who made the top 20 last year were still learning the craft; this year’s cast are sharper and fiercer in the kitchen, Preston says. One thing that hasn’t changed, Calombaris says, is the positive feel of the show. ‘‘The soul of the show is about teaching people, uplifting people and firm but fair (judging),’’ he says. ‘‘If we continue that, I think we will be just as much of a success as series one.’’ — ELIZABETH MERYMENT
