Utah Safety Council Award of Merit

CVE received the Utah Safety Council’s Award of Merit at the annual awards luncheon in September. Thisaward recognizes outstanding achievement in corporate safety programs. To qualify for consideration, acompany must have an established safety program, demonstrate continuous improvement or consistenthigh levels of excellence, and maintain an incident rate lower than the industry’s national average. CacheValley Electric has received this award for 11 consecutive years.

Safety is a top priority at every level of CVE’s organization. President and CEO Jim Laub has established aculture where safety is second to none. Division managers and project managers work closely with sitesupervisors to bring this emphasis to each individual jobsite. CVE’s full-time safety managers coordinatewith general contractors, owners and subcontractors to reduce risk and exposure for all personnel onsite.

Occupational Seat Belt Award

CVE was recently honored with the Utah Safety Council’s Occupational Seat Belt Award. This awardrecognizes companies that encourage seat belt use among employees and achieve usage rates of at least95%. CVE Safety Director Zane Smith conducted random audits over a period of two months to calculateCVE’s seat belt usage rate. He was pleased to find that 99% of CVE employees were wearing their seatbelts correctly.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death in the workplace. Utah roads see a motor vehiclecrash every 10 minutes and approximately 270 fatalities each year. Cache Valley Electric makes trafficsafety a top priority to help our employees be safe while driving.

Utah Business Magazine Fast 50

Cache Valley Electric has again been named one of Utah Business magazine’s Fast 50 companies. Eachyear, Utah Business recognizes Utah companies that not only have rapidly increasing revenues and growth, but an ability to adapt to quickly-changing business conditions. As CVE approaches its 100 yearanniversary, we are proud to be a vibrant part of Utah’s growing economy.

Cache Valley Electric was recently awarded a designand construction contract for the Utah State UniversityElectrified Vehicle & Roadway Research Facility. USUresearchers will use this new facility, the first of itskind in the United States, to test recharging technologyfor electric vehicles. Limited driving range hashistorically been the biggest drawback for thoseconsidering an electric vehicle. This “range anxiety” isespecially a factor for drivers in the West, who typicallycommute long distances for work.

This new complex will include a 4,800 square footresearch building and an electrified .25 mile oval-shaped track. The track is intended to simulatein-motion wireless power charging for electric vehicles.By connecting with wireless inductive power transferpads embedded in the roadway, electric vehicles willseamlessly charge while in motion. This technologycould drastically reduce the need for large batterypacks and cumbersome charging stations.

After receiving this design build contract, CVE beganworking hand-in-hand with USU, Woodbury Corporation (architect) and Gramoll Construction

(general contractor). CVE is responsible for the designand installation of the power distribution, including acand dc power distribution to the roadway. The entirefacility will be networked with data and security/videosystems to collect data from the roadway and vehiclein real-time.

The electrical scope of work consists of installingelectrical wiring for the track, building, chargingstations and equipment. CVE will also install 12-strand multi mode fiber and Cat6 copper to eightlocations on the track. The power on the track willallow for both 480v ac and 500v dc. CVE projectmanager Eric Rose commented, “One of the thingsthat makes this project so unique is the use of the ACand DC power installation simultaneously. This createsa tremendous need for safety awareness.”

Cache Valley Electric will utilize three of its divisionsfor this project—Design-Build Electrical for theengineering and construction, Teledata/Multimedia forthe fiber and copper cabling, and Avtec for the securityand video components.

Recognition and Awards

Cache Valley Electric’s Signal and Utility Divisionrecently completed UDOT’s new diverging diamondinterchange (DDI) in Brigham City, Utah. This DDI,the first in Northern Utah, is considered one of themost efficient systems for getting vehicles on, off andover the freeway. The interchange consists of twocrossing sections with signals installed on both ends.Opposing lanes crisscross and create a diamondshape. This particular interchange was designed tomore quickly divert westbound traffic to the I-15southbound ramp, where long delays were typical.

CVE’s scope of work involvedinstalling highway lighting, six signalarms and three overhead signstructures. CVE crews also poured amassive structure foundation thatwas 30 feet deep and 6 feet indiameter. Two additional signs willbe attached directly to the bridgestructure.

Ralph L. Wadsworth, SLC, is the generalcontractor for this project. This project beganapproximately a year ago with the construction ofa new bridge. CVE’s scope of work took about 6months to complete. CVE project manager DanCalderwood stated, “These diverging diamondinterchange projects are exciting to be involvedwith. They really help update Utah’sinfrastructure and make our highway systemsmore efficient. Our team did a great job keepingthis project on schedule.”

project with many obstacles. Preserving the historical integrity is only one of the challenges. Temporary pumpshad to be installed due to the high water table. At times, 30 pumps working simultaneously were required tokeep up with the ground water. CVE’s team of electricians, project management and BIM designers has done agreat job coordinating with the other subcontractors and Jacobsen to alleviate potential problems.”

Project Manager Steve Grant commented on the high level of coordination and attention to detail required onthis project. “Coordination with the subcontractors doing the millwork was crucial for outlets and decorativelighting placement,” he noted. “The electrical components could be no more than 1/16th of an inch off, so theywere installed with flex conduit to allow for placement shift if necessary.”

Cache Valley Electric’s Teledata Division has been awarded a contract to install the entire voice and data systemin this temple. Installation of the voice and data cabling began in late July 2014. Cat6 enhanced Belden copperand Corning fiber will be installed per the Church’s temple specification standards. More than 100,000 feet ofcable will be placed throughout the building. Project manager Brad Christensen and lead technician CraigBailey will manage a team of 4 technicians at the peak of construction.

In June 2014, Cache Valley Electric beganconstruction on an environmentally-friendly tomatofarm in Juab County. Houweling’s Tomatoes chosethis 28.3-acre site for their unique new greenhousefarm, which will utilize heat from the nearby CurrantCreek power plant. The greenhouse will also fertilizetomato crops with carbon dioxide from the plant’sgenerators. This sustainable technology, along withstate-of-the-art climate control, will allow thegreenhouse to operate with a very low carbonfootprint. Houweling’s has brought this project tofruition with the help of Pacificorp Energy,owner/operator of the Currant Creek GenerationFacility, and Rocky Mountain Power, who will supplyelectricity for the greenhouse.

Cache Valley Electric has worked closely with ownerCasey Houweling since the early design phase, helpingHouweling’s create the most efficient system possible.CVE has assisted with engineering, design andcoordination for the facility, including the transmissionline, substation and greenhouse power distribution.Design Build manager Scott Jensen remarked, “Thishas been an exciting project for CVE as we have hadthe opportunity to work directly with the owner sincethe beginning. The sustainability technology is thefirst of its kind in North America and we are proud tobe a part of it.”

Nicole Prater, under the direction of Don Peterson, willlead a crew of CVE linemen on the transmission lineand substation contract. Their scope of work involvesprocuring and constructing a new 138kV transmissionline from the existing Clover Substation to the new

Burraston Metering Station. CVE will also build themetering station, along with a new Houweling’sSubstation. The Line Department will engineer, procure and construct new 12kV feeders to feed thegreenhouses and other Houweling’s equipment. Crewswill install 2500kVA transformers to feed grow lights, aboiler room, a packing house and other ancillary loads.

CVE’s Electrical Construction Division will beresponsible for the power distribution from thedistribution panel to the greenhouse. This scope ofwork includes 4000 amp lighting switchboards, transformer installation, and feeder wire from lightingswitchboard to lighting relay panels in the greenhouse.John Krstyen and Joel Price will lead a team of 20electricians at construction’s peak. Substantialcompletion for this project is anticipated for lateDecember 2014.

The City of South Bend, Indiana, was recently notified that their current Unified Communication provider wasdiscontinuing services. The city quickly moved to find a new direction for its phone, voicemail, 911 response, andcontact center needs.

CVE combined the expertise of MicroIntegration, a data center provider in South Bend, and Qubit Networks, anIndiana telephone system provider, to provide an effective solution for the City. CVE previously partnered withMicroIntegration on a state-of-the-art Cisco system and with Qubit on a national UC system installation. Theserelationships enabled CVE account manager Rich West to quickly design a seamless new system, as well as aproject plan for the migration. Engineers Craig Larson and Damon Chaput worked on building the system andpreparing for the migration.

On September 5th, 2014, the CVE team met in South Bend for the cutover from the old provider. This migrationinvolved porting 1,400 numbers to more than 50 sites, including police, fire and recreational facilities. Craig andDamon quickly worked through technical issues and completed the full migration by the end of the day.
