Utah’s Geography

LongitudeThe distance from the prime meridian to either the East or West.

Like Latitude, Longitude is often measured in degrees.

Utah resides between the longitudinal degrees of 109 degrees West and 114 degrees West.

LatitudeThe distance from the equator either to the North or South.

The distance is measured in degrees.

Utah resides between 37 degrees North and 42 degrees North.

HemisphereWhen a circle is drawn around the Earth it devides the earth into two equal halves called Hemispheres.

There are four Hemispheres, the Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western.

Utah is located in the Northern and Western Hemispheres. (National Geographic Society, 2011)

ClimateThe long term pattern of weather in an area.

There are five climate groups: Tropical, Dry, Mild, Continental, and Polar.

Natural ResourcesMaterials that are found in and on the Earth that are used for many things.

Some examples are the trees, rivers, and lakes that are found throughout Utah.

There are many other resources found throughout the world.

LandformsA feature on Earths surface that is part of the terrain.

There are mountains, hills, plateaus, and plains.

There are some of each of the listed landforms in Utah.

RegionsAn area of land that has common features.

The features can either be natural or artificial.

Utah is part of the West, Southwest, New Southwest, and the Rocky Mountain Regions.

MountainsLandforms that occur when tectonic plates interact with eachother.

There are several types of mountains such as a fold mountain, sierra and mesa.

The Rocky Mountains are a mountain range that is in Utah.

PlainsA broad area of realitivly flat land.

There are many different kinds of plains such as costal, flood, steppe, and prairie.

HillsA piece of land that is higher than everything else surrounding it.

Hills are easier to climb than mountains but still have a summit like mountains.

PlateausA flat, elevated landform that is higher than the surrounding area on at least one side.

There are two types of plateaus: Dissected and Volcanic.

Dissected plateaus are formed when the Earth crust moves and Volcanic plateaus are formed by layers of lava.
