Technology Description:In this work, the new design concept of the front lower control arm is employed. CATIA software was employed in this work to design the front lower control arm. After that, HyperWorks software was used to analyze the structural strength and optimized the weight of the part. The target of the new design is a 20% reduction of the overall weight of the commercial front lower control arm which was fabricated using steel material. In this project, an aluminum lightweight front lower control arm (FLCA) for Proton C-segment car has successfully developed using casting processing route and its performance was investigated to determine the mechanical properties of the parts. Investment casting process was selected based on the lightweight optimized design of FLCA to produce prototype of the parts. Samples produced from the investment casting process then underwent the mechanical testing and microstructural characterization. The obtained results showed significant reduction of the overall weight as high as 30% with a fatigue life cycle of 396,000 cycles. This finding proved that the new design of front lower arm has fulfilled the criteria of fatigue life cycle and was suitable to be used in a C-segment passenger car.

Novelty/Inventiveness:• Lightweight lower control arm for a vehicle suspension system comprises of front bush mounting, rear bush

mounting and ball joint mounting which are connected to the upright assembly. The rear bush mounting has a 2.6mm SAPH 440 High Strength Steel metal sleeve formed by metal stamping process to hold the rear bush to the lower arm.

• The metal sleeve has bends on both side of the edges (R2.6 inner and R5.2 outer radius with 57 degree angle) to increase structural integrity of the metal sleeve.

• The body part of lower control arm is made of aluminum casting process, a 2.6mm depth pocket milling feature is design to accommodate the metal sleeve.

• It has 4-degree draft angle at parting lines surrounding the body. • Four unique triangular shape holes are designed to minimize the weight, which design is interpreted from

topology optimized design.• Each corner of triangular shape holes haves R4 fillets and rounded corners to improve structural integrity and

MYLEXICS 2.0

SHAHRIL BIN [email protected] 2541

Technology Description:Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability resulting in people experiencing difficulties in reading, spelling, writing and speaking due to the inability to differentiate sound components. These problems are sometimes accompanied by short-term memory difficulties, a lack of organizational skills and time management issues which all have an impact on learning. MyLexics 2.0 is a mobile application version of MyLexics - courseware that was developed to help children with dyslexia learn to read and write in the Malay language. MyLexics was developed based on the ‘Dual Coding Theory’ by Allan Paivio (Paivio and Begg,1981) who suggested that a recall or recognition can be enhanced by presenting information in both visual and verbal form, combined with the Scaffolding teaching strategy (Wood et. al., 1976) – providing assistance to student on an as-needed basis, fading it as the competence increases. The content has been structured as building up the process; the children learn the individual ‘alphabets’ and then combine the alphabets to make ‘syllables’, finally they add the combined syllables to other syllables to form ‘words’. MyLexics 2.0 was designed based on mobile cloud computing to increase the numbers of the target users in the global market. Mobile cloud computing is a powerful tool to enable the user to use this mobile application anytime and anywhere when needed irrespective of their movement (N. Fernando et. al, 2013). Adopting the advantages of mobile cloud computing; Mylexics 2.0 provides an additional crucial feature by helping teachers and parents to monitor the progress of their children’s learning in real time which cannot be done by the previous version.

IMPROVING AGRICULTURE MANAGEMENT SERVICE SMART AGRICULTURE MOBILE APPLICATION

ASSOC. PROF. DR. SHARIFAH SAKINAH SYED AHMAD [email protected] 06-270 2432

Technology Description:The world populations will increase from 7 billion to 9.2 billion by 2050. United Nations Food and Agriculture (FAO) estimates the demand for food produced through agricultural activities will also increase by 70%. Consequently, effective and sustainable agricultural management is essential for producing safe and sufficient food for the world’s population. Community awareness on nutritional and pesticide-free, heavy metals and harmful microorganisms is also increasing. This is due to the increase in various cases of harmful and chronic diseases such as cancer, persistent headaches and nerve diseases that are also linked to nutrition. Hence, Good Practice Agriculture (GAP) should be practiced extensively for the purpose of supplying safe and quality food sources to the public. MyGAP is one of the resource management systems that can prove the agriculture management process is good and sustainable. MYGAP certification also enhances the competitiveness of Malaysian agricultural products internationally. However, MYGAP is considered decertified by farmers in Malaysia due to the tedious management data recording process. In addition, there is no practical farm management application because the existing system is very complex and does not fit the needs of farmers in Malaysia. Hence, the MYGAP mobile application that we have developed helps in ensuring effective farm records management.

Novelty/Inventiveness:• This application has tremendous potential as it is the first in Malaysia and the development of this application

gets direct cooperation from farmers and agricultural officials. In addition, the use of these mobile applications in plantation management and agricultural business activities can improve the performance of farmers in raising their farm’s production and supporting agribusiness.

Commercialization Potential:• Using the developed system, the problem of food security can be monitored by the government if it is used

extensively. This is because important information such as crop yield estimation can be provided through the information that farmers have provided through this system. This can have a great impact on the increase in food prices in the future.

• This application can be seen to provide benefits in the development of information systems and some software tools developed for the use of farmers. It will be an important guide in producing more technology in agriculture that will scale the country’s economy in the future.

• Then developed applications will appeal to youths to venture into agriculture because they can learn more about farming techniques and management online via their smartphones. In addition, the use of social media that supports the activities of youth agribusiness will cause the industry to grow and become popular.

However, these methods do not offer an interactivity visualization of the medical information that helps to create a much engaging presentation to users. Moreover, the medical doctors are unable to show and explain in details about the occurrence of the disease through these methods. An interactive method therefore is required to assist the doctors to effectively convey the information of the disease. Since the human eye is the most complex organ in our body, thus an advanced technology, i.e., hologram should be used to visualize the visual system in an effective and interactive method, also to produce an effective eye diseases explanation. The hologram is in a three-dimensional image form besides an interactivity element, where the proposed technology will help doctors to examine vital organs using 3D displays. It is envisaged that the proposed interactive holography technique for the clinical purpose would greatly contribute to and assist the management of eye diseases and other diseases as well. It is hoped that the developed interactive holography technique for an eye will assist clinicians in delivering the disease information efficiently and attractively.

MULTISPECTRAL REMOTE SENSING SYSTEM FOR OIL AND GAS EXPLORATION

ASSOC. PROF. GS. DR. ASMALA BIN AHMAD [email protected] 1317

Technology Description:Hydrocarbon in the form of oil and gas has long been the source of raw material in producing useful things for human daily activities besides fueling our vehicles and machines. Seismic, gravity, magnetic and resistivity surveys are among the conventional methods used in detecting subsurface oil and gas. However, these methods are very expensive particularly for large and remote areas. Satellite remote sensing offers a better alternative over these conventional methods due to its ability to monitor large-scale areas continuously and with a cheaper cost. Nevertheless, satellite remote sensing suffers from shortcomings in terms of low spatial resolution (meter level), low revisit frequency (revisit time more than 10 days) and limited autonomy (mostly owned and managed by agencies from developed countries due to the expensive infrastructures). To overcome these issues, we developed a novel drone-based multispectral remote sensing system with very high spectral resolution (millimeter level), high revisit frequency (depending on the user’s need) and user’s full autonomy (the system can be operated by one person, from anywhere and at any time). The system is mounted with a multispectral remote sensing sensor that operates in 0.5-0.8 micrometer wavelengths involving green, red, red edge and infrared spectral bands. It is able to navigate autonomously and can be tracked in real-time. Oil detection is carried out by making used of embedded Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) algorithm to detect oil micro leakage which leads to an abnormality of vegetation health condition. This is due to the migration and gathering of oil and gas micro leakage in the soil, replacing the original air and change the soil environment of the plant roots. The chlorophyll content of the plants tend to reduce, and the red edge position of plant tend to shift toward the shorter wavelengths and consequently affecting the plant health, eventually indicating the presence of hydrocarbon. This shall help oil and gas companies in carrying out oil and gas exploration tasks more effectively and cost-efficiently.

Novelty/Inventiveness:• Provide ready-to-use NDVI images for oil and

gas exploration• Autonomous speed variability based on the

object-to-sensor range to avoid image non-overlapping issue during the stitching process

• Provide full-autonomy to users – It can be operated by one-person operator, anyone, from anywhere and at any time

Commercialization Potential:• For use by organizations dealing with oil and

gas exploration businesses.
