Roseburg Audiology Center has served Douglas County for 27 years and sees patients of all

ages, children as well as adults.

The center provides complete, professional diagnostic hearing services, as well as hearing

aids and hearing conservation services. There are currently four licensed audiologists on staff.

Audiologist Carol D. Beach founded Roseburg Audiology in 1981, and continues to dedicate

her time and effort to excellent patient care.

Audiologist Patricia Burmeister joined the staff in 1991. Verelle Powell, doctor of audiology,

has been with the center since 1997. Rounding out the professional staff is Scott Anderson, a

doctor of audiology who became part of the team in September.

Cheryl Kelly and Laura Caig provide front office support. They are always ready to greet

patients with warm, friendly smiles.

Last year’s addition of Dr. Anderson resulted in greatly decreased waiting times for appoint-

ments. In most cases, Roseburg Audiology Center is able to schedule patient appointments

within a week.

The audiologists and support staff at Roseburg Audiology Center are dedicated to providing

fast, friendly and professional hearing health services. They are both honored and grateful to

be selected for the Reader’s Choice Award.

Celebrating its 30th anniversary in Douglas County, Kamper Korner RV Center strives to pro-vide a friendly atmosphere that puts customers at ease.

Where competitors might send salesmen to training sessions to learn high-pressures sales tac-tics, Kamper Korner employees take a different approach.

“We pride ourselves on trying to make the sales experience comfortable for our customersfrom beginning to end,” said Wade Koens, Kamper Korner co-owner with his father, HarlanKoens. “We enjoy speaking with people and treating them right, and it’s important to be on afirst-name basis, too.” In keeping with the low-pressure environment, Kamper Korner RVs areleft unlocked during business hours so that shoppers who prefer it can browse the various floorplans without an employee escort.

Founded in 1978 in Winchester, Kamper Korner was purchased by Harlan Koens about 10years ago; son Wade bought into the business about four years ago.

They run a full-service RV dealership in the areas of parts, sales and service. One example ofhow Kamper Korner seeks to meet changing market conditions (and rising gas prices) is byoffering a full line of 2008 tent trailers.

That allows customers with smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles to continue to enjoy the RVlifestyle without having to resort to pitching tents or checking into motels.

Kamper Korner also aims to keep its staff informed through continued training, which in turnbenefits customers.

“Our goals are to continue to build on our customer base and to increase our service ability,”Wade Koens said.

Above all, the Koens give credit to their employees for making Kamper Korner a leader inmeeting the county’s RV needs. Currently on staff are Gene Hodson, service advisor; DaveDenn, master certified RV technician; Dan Stafford and Cory Beauchamp, RV technicians;Marla Lynn and Rick Kluver, customer service representatives and Leila Hult, office manager.

Not every funeral home would be willing to release a casket to friends of the deceased for acustom paint job.

But Americans are changing the way they want to remember the lives of those they love,and Wilson’s Chapel of the Roses is ready to change with them.

“A lot of funeral homes would worry about liabilty, what would happen to the casket if itcame back dented? But we don’t want to tell people what they want can’t be done,” saysregional manager Kevin Mueller, recalling how a Roseburg family wanted to personalize thecasket in question. “If they want a Harley-Davidson in front of the chapel because it’s whatDad always rode, they can do that.”

“We want to be very open to all the different requests.” Now owned by the Pennsylvania-based StoneMor Partners L.P., Wilson’s Chapel of the Roses can trace its history back toRoseburg Undertaking Co., established in 1901 on the corner of Oak Avenue and Kane Street.It has been in its current location on Harvard Avenue since 1964.

Although the business has changed hands over the years, Wilson’s merged with Long &Shukle Memorial Chapel in early 2007, Mueller says what hasn’t changed is the customerservice delivered to the community.

In particular, Mueller says staff members make an effort to listen to families during such adifficult and stressful time.

“So many funeral companies in today’s society tell family what the funeral standards are,”he says. “We listen to the family to find out what it is they want to memorialize their lovedone.” Mueller says Wilson’s is the only funeral chapel in Roseburg with an on-site crematory.To accommodate the many families who are shifting from traditional mourning services tocelebrations of life, Wilson’s has set up a large TV screen in its chapel and provides free slideshows for those who wish to include that element in a service.

Wilson’s Chapel of the Roses also has made a priority of ensuring that services are suppliedon the family’s schedule, rather than asking the family to adapt to the needs of the business.

“The family has got a lot of things to deal with in a very short time, so we don’t want themwaiting on us. The family’s needs are first and foremost,” Mueller says.

Gustavo Anaya came into the restaurant business in Roseburg in the worst possible way: tak-ing the reins of Los Dos Amigos following the death of his 33-year-old sister and her husband.

But what started in pain for Gustavo and his family has turned into tremendous communitysupport.

Gustavo has been operating Los Dos Amigos for 18 years, watching the business grow to fivelocations, with a total of 80 employees. The business truly is family-run. Wife Coco, daughterOlga, sons Julio and Manny are all part of the success story.

Los Dos had already become popular through the efforts of Rosalio and Blanca Guitron, whodied in a car accident in Guadalajara, Mexico in 1995. The two had grown up in a town nearGuadalajara and were in Mexico to work on their farm at the time of the accident. The Guitronswere sole owners of the downtown Roseburg Los Dos Amigos restaurant and were part ownersof the newer restaurant on Northeast Stephens Street.

In addition to the two Roseburg stores, Gustavo, along with oldest son Manny, operates a LosDos restaurant in the Roseburg Valley Mall and one in Sutherlin. Younger son Julio goes alongwith Dad, as well as helping out where he can. A fifth restaurant is in Coos Bay.

Gustavo says Los Dos takes pride in serving authentic Mexican food. The restaurant offersreserved seating and accommodates large parties; customers also may gather in the lounge area.

Gary Leif has dealt with change the only way he could: roll with it.When big box stores began eroding the one-hour lab businesses he established in Roseburg,

when digital photography started replacing dark room work, and when people requested loca-tion shoots rather than the standard studio portraits, Gary didn’t hesitate. He not only picked upon trends, he ran with them.

“I’m a person who perseveres,” he says. “That’s my personality, to just stay in it ... It’s allabout how you work though problems and come up with a solution.” The 1975 Roseburg HighSchool graduate knew early on that he wanted to make a career in photography. And that hewanted to open his own studio in his hometown. After completing studies at the Brooks Insti-tute of Photography in Santa Barbara, Calif., Gary returned to Roseburg and “I’ve been doing itever since,” he says of working with cameras.

Today, Leif Photography specializes in custom portraiture, with many families having photostaken in their homes or other places meaningful to them. Sports portraits are popular, producedwith special equipment in Leif Photography’s custom lab.

Gary has had as many as six locations during the one-hour-photo heyday. Now he has consoli-dated to his flagship store on Southeast Jackson Street, which has undergone a complete remod-eling.

“We’ve changed our logo, our Web site and the look of our studio front,” Gary says, adding,“I love downtown Roseburg.” But he also loves to travel. Gary has a “shooting event” severaltimes a year at the coast. In addition, he journeys across the United States for wedding portrai-ture.

The latter remains a favorite project of Gary’s. “I love to take wedding portraits and createwonderful memories for families,” he says.

Gary also has expanded into scenic photography, producing a 100-image CD called “DiscoverOregon.” The disc featured shots of eastern, western and central Oregon, as well as DouglasCounty and the Umpqua River. This year, Gary plans to migrate to “Discover Northern Califor-nia.” In addition, Leif Photography is an independent dealer with Herff Jones, a subsidiarycompany for school pictures.

“Herff Jones is the second-largest school picture company in the U.S.A., so we shoot most ofthe schools in our area, and are expanding to the Coast now,” Gary says.

As far as Gary is concerned, Leif Photography will remain a Douglas County fixture. “Im here for the duration, through thick and thin,” he says.

At Roseburg’s favorite furniture store, it’s a family affair, and customers who have been returning over and over for a coupleof decades are just part of the clan.

Co-owners Larry Garzenelli and daughter Karen Kohlman direct the operation, while Kohlman’s son Tyler is a member ofthe third generation to work in the store since it opened 20 years ago in the same location.

This is the seventh consecutive year that West Harvard has been named the top furniture dealer in Douglas County. And thesecret to its success?

“Good value and great service,” says Garzenelli, noting that the community-oriented business is the only locally owned andoperated store in town. “There’s no high-pressure sales, and we’re here to get you the right piece of furniture the first time.”Daughter Karen is a Jill-of-all-trades, managing a staff of about a dozen employees.

She is also the store’s buyer and attends huge trade shows twice a year to keep the store’s inventory full of items that mightattract the eyes of customers.

“You take a look at all the new styles and fashions and try to match them up with the tastes of Douglas County,” she says.“You have to know your market, which is a challenge in itself.”

“The key to our success is our professional, long-term employees, who care about our clients,” Kohlman adds.The store’s mission is to sell the best-quality furniture available at a fair price and most important, to take care of customers

from the initial purchase onward, Kohlman says.Her son Tyler also helps out with sales and product promotions as he learns the ropes, she says, and “family” remains a key

word in the business.“At our sales meetings, we always repeat our motto - to treat customers like our favorite relatives,” she says. “Thank you to

all our friends and clients.”

After nearly 30 years in business, Pacific Air Comfort underwent a significant change in

2007. Ken Matchniff, owner of the Salem-based Montag, another HVAC (heating, ventilating

and air conditioning) company, saw a great opportunity when he found out that Pacific Air

Comfort was being offered for sale.

“I really liked their business structure and their ethics,” says Matchniff.

“I saw the success the company was having, not only in Roseburg, but also in their other

branches at Coos Bay and Springfield, and wanted to adopt their award-winning practices,

too.” Montag operates as a division of Pacific Air Comfort, with Kip Higley as general man-

ager of all four locations. “We’re growing and have a strong vision to continue to meet the

demands of our customers. The market has changed, ownership has changed, but our level of

service hasn’t,” says Higley.

“With the recent decrease in the housing market, a lot of our resources have had to shift,

and we’re placing even greater emphasis on doing what we do best, servicing our clients and

maintaining their systems,” Higley says.

“We pride ourselves on being professional and responsive, even with a midnight emer-

gency call.” Tom Gogal Jr., son of former owner, Tom Gogal Sr., still works at the Roseburg

facility and continues to manage the physical operation with the assistance of superintendent

Ty Pedotti. With 62 employees operating in a certified drug and alcohol-free workplace, the

Pacific Air Comfort team continues to deliver.

“We’re very proud of the fact that our original standard of service in Roseburg has grown

into regions throughout Oregon,” says Higley. “We strive to create and maintain a great work

environment for our employees. To make the Reader’s Choice list is testament to the great

After nearly 30 years in business, Pacific Air Comfort underwent a significant change in

2007. Ken Matchniff, owner of the Salem-based Montag, another HVAC (heating, ventilating

and air conditioning) company, saw a great opportunity when he found out that Pacific Air

Comfort was being offered for sale.

“I really liked their business structure and their ethics,” says Matchniff.

“I saw the success the company was having, not only in Roseburg, but also in their other

branches at Coos Bay and Springfield, and wanted to adopt their award-winning practices,

too.” Montag operates as a division of Pacific Air Comfort, with Kip Higley as general man-

ager of all four locations. “We’re growing and have a strong vision to continue to meet the

demands of our customers. The market has changed, ownership has changed, but our level of

service hasn’t,” says Higley.

“With the recent decrease in the housing market, a lot of our resources have had to shift,

and we’re placing even greater emphasis on doing what we do best, servicing our clients and

maintaining their systems,” Higley says.

“We pride ourselves on being professional and responsive, even with a midnight emer-

gency call.” Tom Gogal Jr., son of former owner, Tom Gogal Sr., still works at the Roseburg

facility and continues to manage the physical operation with the assistance of superintendent

Ty Pedotti. With 62 employees operating in a certified drug and alcohol-free workplace, the

Pacific Air Comfort team continues to deliver.

“We’re very proud of the fact that our original standard of service in Roseburg has grown

into regions throughout Oregon,” says Higley. “We strive to create and maintain a great work

Gustavo Anaya came into the restaurant business in Roseburg in the worst possible way: tak-ing the reins of Los Dos Amigos following the death of his 33-year-old sister and her husband.

But what started in pain for Gustavo and his family has turned into tremendous communitysupport.

Gustavo has been operating Los Dos Amigos for 18 years, watching the business grow to fivelocations, with a total of 80 employees. The business truly is family-run. Wife Coco, daughterOlga, sons Julio and Manny are all part of the success story.

Los Dos had already become popular through the efforts of Rosalio and Blanca Guitron, whodied in a car accident in Guadalajara, Mexico in 1995. The two had grown up in a town nearGuadalajara and were in Mexico to work on their farm at the time of the accident. The Guitronswere sole owners of the downtown Roseburg Los Dos Amigos restaurant and were part ownersof the newer restaurant on Northeast Stephens Street.

In addition to the two Roseburg stores, Gustavo, along with oldest son Manny, operates a LosDos restaurant in the Roseburg Valley Mall and one in Sutherlin. Younger son Julio goes alongwith Dad, as well as helping out where he can. A fifth restaurant is in Coos Bay.

Gustavo says Los Dos takes pride in serving authentic Mexican food. The restaurant offersreserved seating and accommodates large parties; customers also may gather in the lounge area.

Gary Leif has dealt with change the only way he could: roll with it.When big box stores began eroding the one-hour lab businesses he established in Roseburg,

when digital photography started replacing dark room work, and when people requested loca-tion shoots rather than the standard studio portraits, Gary didn’t hesitate. He not only picked upon trends, he ran with them.

“I’m a person who perseveres,” he says. “That’s my personality, to just stay in it ... It’s allabout how you work though problems and come up with a solution.” The 1975 Roseburg HighSchool graduate knew early on that he wanted to make a career in photography. And that hewanted to open his own studio in his hometown. After completing studies at the Brooks Insti-tute of Photography in Santa Barbara, Calif., Gary returned to Roseburg and “I’ve been doing itever since,” he says of working with cameras.

Today, Leif Photography specializes in custom portraiture, with many families having photostaken in their homes or other places meaningful to them. Sports portraits are popular, producedwith special equipment in Leif Photography’s custom lab.

Gary has had as many as six locations during the one-hour-photo heyday. Now he has consoli-dated to his flagship store on Southeast Jackson Street, which has undergone a complete remod-eling.

“We’ve changed our logo, our Web site and the look of our studio front,” Gary says, adding,“I love downtown Roseburg.” But he also loves to travel. Gary has a “shooting event” severaltimes a year at the coast. In addition, he journeys across the United States for wedding portrai-ture.

The latter remains a favorite project of Gary’s. “I love to take wedding portraits and createwonderful memories for families,” he says.

Gary also has expanded into scenic photography, producing a 100-image CD called “DiscoverOregon.” The disc featured shots of eastern, western and central Oregon, as well as DouglasCounty and the Umpqua River. This year, Gary plans to migrate to “Discover Northern Califor-nia.” In addition, Leif Photography is an independent dealer with Herff Jones, a subsidiarycompany for school pictures.

“Herff Jones is the second-largest school picture company in the U.S.A., so we shoot most ofthe schools in our area, and are expanding to the Coast now,” Gary says.

As far as Gary is concerned, Leif Photography will remain a Douglas County fixture. “Im here for the duration, through thick and thin,” he says.

Not every funeral home would be willing to release a casket to friends of the deceased for acustom paint job.

But Americans are changing the way they want to remember the lives of those they love,and Wilson’s Chapel of the Roses is ready to change with them.

“A lot of funeral homes would worry about liabilty, what would happen to the casket if itcame back dented? But we don’t want to tell people what they want can’t be done,” saysregional manager Kevin Mueller, recalling how a Roseburg family wanted to personalize thecasket in question. “If they want a Harley-Davidson in front of the chapel because it’s whatDad always rode, they can do that.”

“We want to be very open to all the different requests.” Now owned by the Pennsylvania-based StoneMor Partners L.P., Wilson’s Chapel of the Roses can trace its history back toRoseburg Undertaking Co., established in 1901 on the corner of Oak Avenue and Kane Street.It has been in its current location on Harvard Avenue since 1964.

Although the business has changed hands over the years, Wilson’s merged with Long &Shukle Memorial Chapel in early 2007, Mueller says what hasn’t changed is the customerservice delivered to the community.

In particular, Mueller says staff members make an effort to listen to families during such adifficult and stressful time.

“So many funeral companies in today’s society tell family what the funeral standards are,”he says. “We listen to the family to find out what it is they want to memorialize their lovedone.” Mueller says Wilson’s is the only funeral chapel in Roseburg with an on-site crematory.To accommodate the many families who are shifting from traditional mourning services tocelebrations of life, Wilson’s has set up a large TV screen in its chapel and provides free slideshows for those who wish to include that element in a service.

Wilson’s Chapel of the Roses also has made a priority of ensuring that services are suppliedon the family’s schedule, rather than asking the family to adapt to the needs of the business.

“The family has got a lot of things to deal with in a very short time, so we don’t want themwaiting on us. The family’s needs are first and foremost,” Mueller says.

Founded in 1978 in Winchester, Kamper Korner was purchased by Harlan Koens about 10years ago; son Wade bought into the business about four years ago.

They run a full-service RV dealership in the areas of parts, sales and service. One example ofhow Kamper Korner seeks to meet changing market conditions (and rising gas prices) is byoffering a full line of 2008 tent trailers.

That allows customers with smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles to continue to enjoy the RVlifestyle without having to resort to pitching tents or checking into motels.

Kamper Korner also aims to keep its staff informed through continued training, which in turnbenefits customers.

“Our goals are to continue to build on our customer base and to increase our service ability,”Wade Koens said.

Above all, the Koens give credit to their employees for making Kamper Korner a leader inmeeting the county’s RV needs. Currently on staff are Gene Hodson, service advisor; DaveDenn, master certified RV technician; Dan Stafford and Cory Beauchamp, RV technicians;Marla Lynn and Rick Kluver, customer service representatives and Leila Hult, office manager.

Audiologist Patricia Burmeister joined the staff in 1991. Verelle Powell, doctor of audiology,

has been with the center since 1997. Rounding out the professional staff is Scott Anderson, a

doctor of audiology who became part of the team in September.

Cheryl Kelly and Laura Caig provide front office support. They are always ready to greet

patients with warm, friendly smiles.

Last year’s addition of Dr. Anderson resulted in greatly decreased waiting times for appoint-

ments. In most cases, Roseburg Audiology Center is able to schedule patient appointments

within a week.

The audiologists and support staff at Roseburg Audiology Center are dedicated to providing

fast, friendly and professional hearing health services. They are both honored and grateful to

be selected for the Reader’s Choice Award.

Sherm’s Thunderbird Market donated a semitruck load of food to the UmpquaCommunity Action Network during the 2007 holiday season. It was the first time that
