The healthy, fresh, and individually wrapped snacks were handed out to each student at the school, farmers-market style, with the student selecting produce from a number of different stations all staffed by members of the Child Nutrition Department. READ MORE Class of 2018 Athletic Hall of Fame announced A two-time World Series champion, two Sports Illustrated magazine cover subjects, and a football player turned lawyer are among this year’s Athletic Hall of Fame honorees. “This year’s Hall of Fame inductees just show how great and deep the rich history of San Antonio ISD athletics is,” said Todd Howey, the District’s athletic director. “Two of our inductees have graced the cover of the Sports Illustrated magazine, something you do not see very often from a school district. Not only were these inductees great at the high school level, but they went on to do great things in their professional lives as well. From breaking racial barriers to advancing women’s athletics to winning Super Bowls to setting high expectations for student-athletes as a coach, all of our honorees all have demonstrated championship effort on and off the playing field.” YWLA artists work displayed in NAEN Studio (Left to right) Tenth-grader Emily La Rosa and eighth-graders Sabrina Arguello, Ana Moreno and Fili Garcia have had their work selected for exhibition in the National Art Education Association (NAEA) Gallery & Studio in Alexandria, VA. This is an annual, nation-wide competition for National Art Honor Society and National Junior Art Honor Society members. NAEA received 1,160 submissions, and 66 works have been selected for exhibition. This competitive exhibit provides a backdrop to a variety of national and local events held at the studio. Congressional Art Competition winner Maya Diaz, a junior at Brackenridge HS, placed first in Congressional District 35 in the United States Congressional Institutes nationwide Congressional Art Competition. Each spring, the Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. District 35’s Lloyd Doggett presented Diaz the honor on May 14, 2018, at the school library. Diaz’s artwork will be on display in Washington, D.C. at the U.S. Capitol for a year. Sarah Estrada, a junior at Jefferson HS, placed third in congressional District 20 and received recognition from Joaquin Castro earlier this month. Tech, business, and mentorship are core components at CAST Walking through the halls of CAST Tech HS, one might think that they are entering a trendy co- working space or tech company headquarters. Colorful furniture is clustered throughout the hallways and common areas. Exposed cables and pipes run along the 25-foot high ceilings. And, on this particular day, every single workspace on the second floor is filled with people. Quiet conversations and laughter can be heard as a mix of ninth- graders and professionals from local businesses participate in speed networking mentorship sessions. Groups of three students have five minutes to sit with an adult who leads a conversation on one of seven topics. Journey just as important as destination in Burbank IB When Gema Aleman moved to San Antonio three years ago, she wanted to learn more about the community into which she was moving. She purposefully introduced herself to her elderly neighbors and after talking with them, realized that because of their age and physical limitations, they weren’t able to walk their dogs as much as they would like. So, she started walking their dogs for them. It is this inquisitive nature and willingness to look at the world from someone else’s perspective that makes Aleman an ideal pick for the Burbank International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme. Brackenridge HS Choir The Brackenridge HS Treble Choir competed at UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest earlier this spring and came home with a Sweepstakes trophy. “I am so proud of these girls for their hard work and dedication,” said Gloria Lorraine Mendoza, the director of choral activities at Brackenridge. Verbena placed first in her division for Wheelchair 60 Meter, 100 Meter, 400 Meter, 800 Meter, and first in her division for shot put, discus throw, and javelin.
