REACH OUT AND READRhode Island

ANNUAL REPORT2013-14

OUR STORYOur story began with pediatricians and educators in Boston who had the incredible foresight to integrate books for children and advice forparents on reading aloud into standard pediatric care. It was a simple idea with a remarkable outcome. Today, the research to support thispractice is stronger than ever: the first five years of a child’s life offer a critical window for brain growth and language development, and frequent exposure to language and reading at home sets a strong foundation for young children to learn. By encouraging parents to readaloud to their babies and toddlers, Reach Out and Read’s pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners, and other medical providersplay a key role in ensuring the healthy development of our state’s youngest children.

Reach Out and Read Rhode Island began in 1999 with five sites. Fifteen years later, we’ve grown to 47 sites – a network consisting of over200 pediatric providers who annually serve close to 28,000 children and their parents and distribute more than 50,000 books to children attheir well child visits.

OUR MISSIONReach Out and Read prepares America’s youngest children to succeed in school by partnering with doctors to prescribe books and encouragefamilies to read together.

THE REACH OUT AND READ MODELDoctors, nurse practitioners, and other medical professionals incorporate Reach Out and Read’s evidence-based, three-part model into regularpediatric checkups:

1. In pediatric exam rooms, trained doctors and nurses speak with parents about the importance of reading aloud.

2. At each regular checkup from 6 months through 5 years of age, the child receives a new book to take home.

3. Parents become more engaged and read to their children more often.

A Message from Reach Out and Read RI’s Board Chair and Executive Director

Welcome to our inaugural annual report for the fiscalyear 2013-14! For 15 years, we have been workinghard to establish our evidence-based, cost-effectiveprogram in Rhode Island to help prepare children tosucceed in school through the delivery of high-quality,age-appropriate books and advice to parents at thepediatric well visit about the importance of readingaloud. We are pleased to report that we are in 47 clinical sites in RI and we are reaching close to 30,000RI children each year. And we have no plans to slowdown. In fact, we want to expand our reach to includeall of our state’s neediest children in the future. Itsounds daunting, but we are well on our way. We haveour medical partners to thank—physicians and nurseswho are committed to treating the whole child. Andwe have our donors to thank—foundations, corpora-tions and individuals who invest in our model.

We are thrilled to be sharing this information withyou for the very first time and welcome your feed-back. At a time when it is most needed, your supportmakes a difference.

Susanna Beckwith (Executive Director) & Stacy Paterno (RORRI Board Chair)

THE POTENTIALThe first 2,000 days of a child’s life matter. Rapid brain developmentduring these first five years offers a critical window for learning. The baby brain forms up to 700 neural connections each second, and by age five – the start of kindergarten for many children – 90%of brain development has occurred. Learning begins at birth andevery interaction, from smiles and laughs to bedtime stories, helpsgrow neural pathways.

THE OPPORTUNITYScience has proven that early childhood experiences shape laterlearning, behavior, and health. Without enriching home environ-ments and nurturing relationships, children miss the opportunity to develop language skills critical to unlocking their potential.

Many American children, especially those growing up in low-incomecommunities, enter kindergarten unprepared to learn and face immediate struggles with literacy – difficulties which compoundwith time and contribute to increased school failure.

OUR SOLUTIONReach Out and Read builds on the unique relationship between parentsand medical providers to develop early literacy skills, effectivelyshrinking the achievement gap and helping children succeed fromthe start.

By prescribing books and encouraging families to read aloud together, beginning with children at six months of age, Reach Out and Read doctors and nurses offer the guidance and tools necessary to create a language-rich, supportive home environment.

OUR IMPACTReach Out and Read is a proven effective and highly efficient modelof promoting early literacy with fifteen peer reviewed studies provingits impact. Pediatricians in the program empower parents as teachers for their young children by providingearly literacy guidance and making reading aloud a "doctor recom-mended" activity. When pediatricians promote early literacy throughthe Reach Out and Read model, parents are up to four times morelikely to read aloud, and children perform up to six months ahead of their non-Reach Out and Read peers on language tests duringthe preschool years. These basic language skills help build theframework for later reading and learning.
