30 ............... Thursday, January 19, 2017 1SM GREEN Day are staging a giant gig in Scotland on the 4th of July because they couldn’t face an Independence Day in the US with Donald Trump as President. The chart-topping band have already endured a backlash from Trump supporters after frontman Billie Joe Armstrong chanted “No Trump! No KKK! No Fascist USA!” at the American Music Awards in November. Now Armstrong and bandmates Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool say they expect American Independence Day to be hijacked by “racist and xenophobic” Trump supporters. Speaking days ahead of Trump’s inauguration as the 45th President of the United States tomorrow, Green Day told The Scottish Sun: “Honestly, a lot of people love the 4th of July, but it is basically just an excuse to get drunk and wear American flags. “It is appropriate for us NOT to be in America on Independence Day with who we’ve gone and elected. “Electing Trump gives the racists and the xenophobes a voice and an excuse.” Tré said: “We don’t want any part of it so we would rather be overseas on Independence Day, definitely, 100 per cent. “We should get back to celebrating that we fought off the British with sticks and rocks, but it’s cool because we can get drunk just as well in Scotland.” The punk icons hope 25,000 Scots will help them get over the political upset of the century by singing Flower Of Scotland instead of the Star Span- gled Banner at Bellahous- ton Park this summer. Tré added: “I just hope that the audi- ence will sing the Scottish anthem because that has happened in the past and it gives you chills. “It makes the hair stand up on your arms to see 25,000 Scottish people sing Flower Of Scotland. It’s incredible. “The 4th of July — that would be a good occasion to belt that song out and we can leave the Star Spangled Banner over here.” Trump previously declared him- self a fan of Green Day. The 70-year old President-elect attended the band’s stage musical American Idiot with wife Melania, tweeting afterwards that it was “amazing”. But he’s probably had a change of heart after Armstrong compared him to Hitler. The Green Day frontman told rock mag Kerrang: “He just said, ‘You have no options and I’m the only one, and I’m going to take care of it myself.’ I mean, that’s f***ing Hitler, man!” The trio’s new single Troubled Times was released on Monday, which in the US was Martin Luther King Jr Day. The video for the song depicts Trump as a monster alongside the Ku Klux Klan, suffragettes and the civil rights leader, who was assas- sinated in 1968. Armstrong wants to challenge Trump “on all of his ignorant poli- cies and his racism” despite threats and insults hurled their way by his supporters. Tré Cool added: “A lot of people are afraid to say what is on their mind or they have nothing on their mind. “We’re still going to be here and we’ll say what we feel. We’re not afraid of a knee-jerk reaction to something, especially when it is us standing up to injustice or racism. We’re not just going to stand back and watch. We’re going to say something, because it’s sad. “We had a lot of progress socially and it feels like they are trying to push us back into the 1950s in a lot of ways.” Squaring up to US presidents is nothing new for the band their 2004 album American Idiot and the single of the same name criticised the George W Bush administration. Tré said: “Now I’m sick to death of politics 2016 was ridiculously brutal in the political spectrum. It was ugly.” The German-born drummer added: “But it’s not the end of the world.
