Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Meals: B in flight Overnight: Beijing

Day 2 BEIJING Sun 10th August After breakfast at your hotel, depart for a visit to the Great Wall, one of China’s major historic sites and a highlight of any visit to China. Originally built in the Warring States period (475-221 BC) as a series of earthworks erected by individual kingdoms as a defence against each other and from invasions from the north, the Great Wall’s main objective was to keep out Genghis Khan and the Mongolian hordes. This proved only partially successful. The present day wall remains from the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) and represents one of the great wonders of the world. After lunch, visit the Forbidden City, the complex of the Imperial Palace that covers 74 hectares and was home to the Emperors of China for over 500 years. Grand Halls and courts gradually give way to the more intimate domestic quarters, giving an insight into the pampered isolation of the Emperors. Afterwards take a stroll in Tiananmen Square, bordered by the Great Hall of the People. This evening we enjoy a special Peking Duck Dinner. Meals: B L D Overnight: Beijing

Day 3 BEIJING Mon 11th August This morning, after breakfast we drive to visit Beijing Zhuochen (beef) processing and distribution (JKL supermarket). Meals: B L D Overnight: Beijing

The livestock population, in particular Simmental and the Horqin cattle, is approximately 5.246 million head and also includes Chinese merino

sheep, Horqin fine-wool sheep and Horqin horses. We’ll have a city tour on arrival and then visit the Kerchin (Horqin) beef feedlot and processing facilities. Meals: B L D Overnight: Tongliao

Day 6 HOHHOT to XIAN Thu 14th August After breakfast in our hotel, we drive to visit the factory and farm of Meng Niu Dairy Company to view the modern processing facilities of this ambitious dairy operation. After lunch we drive to the outskirts of Hohhot to visit some local farmers to look at the various farming methods of their crops and then we head to the airport to take the late afternoon flight to Xian. Meals: B L D Overnight: Xian

Day 7 XIAN Fri 15th August

Dating back to 4000 BC, Xian was the cradle of ancient Chinese civilization and the capital of China for 11 dynasties from 1046 BC to 907 AD. It was from here that caravans started on the Silk Road to Europe, changing the western world forever. Today the group will have a full day of technical visits by driving to visit Kingbull Feedlot & Processing in Yanglin; the area where the Chinese agricultural civilization began. After lunch this afternoon we have a Dairy business visit in Yangling. Late afternoon, we drive back to Xian. Meals: B L D Overnight: Xian

Day 8 XIAN Sat 16th August After breakfast this morning, travel outside the city to see one of China's most important sights - the Qin Terracotta Warriors and Horses - considered one of the world’s greatest archaeological discoveries. This stunning exhibition of ancient artefacts has three exhibition halls, housing the continuing excavation of an army of 8,000 terracotta soldiers and horses guarding the tomb of Qin Shihuang, the first emperor of the unified China. A mound of earth protects the tomb of Qin Shihuang and the story is told that when he died he wanted to be buried along with his entire army and entourage of servants who were, of course, still alive. He was persuaded instead to create life-like clay figures of them all, the famed Terracotta Warriors. Today they still stand with their horses guarding his tomb as they have done for 2000 years. Afterwards we take a tour of the City Wall, once one of the largest ancient military defensive systems in the world and the most complete city wall that has survived in China. This evening we enjoy Tang Dynasty Show with Dinner. Meals: B L D Overnight: Xian

Day 9 XIAN to SHANGHAI Sun 17th August Transfer to the airport after breakfast for the flight to Shanghai where we visit the popular Shanghai Old Town. With a history dating back some 400 years, visitors love this area due to the variety of commodities and shops available. We’ll also visit the Yu Garden, an island of tranquillity amid the hustle and bustle of the city. Covering nearly five acres, the Yu Gardens contain over 30 pavilions, with numerous corridors, small halls, lotus ponds, bridges and winding paths which are characteristic of the architectural style of the Ming dynasty. Outside the Yu Garden is a very interesting market - the Yuyuan Bazaar - a bargain hunter’s paradise selling everything imaginable at very low prices. There’s also time for shopping on Nanjing Road, one of the busiest a shopping streets in China, This evening we have a farewell dinner. Meals: B L D Overnight: Shanghai

Early afternoon travel back to Chongqing and visit the excellent Chongqing Zoo to see China’s Giant Pandas. This evening’s dinner will special local cuisine. The city is famous for its hot Sichuan cuisine and world-famous hotpot dishes. Both street vendors and restaurants feature exciting spicy delicacies for the adventurous. Afterwards transfer to your luxury 5-star cruise liner for a three night cruise downstream on the Yangtze River to Yichang. The Yangtze is the world’s third longest river and passes through three gorges and breath-taking mountain scenery. Much of this spectacular scenery is changing as a result of the world’s largest dam project which you’ll see further downstream. Meals: B L D Overnight: 5 star cruise

Day 3 Yangtze River Cruise Wed 20 August The Yangtze, which snakes its way 6,300 kilometres from western China’s Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to the East China Sea, is an important means of transport for ships carrying all sorts of merchandise. Your first port of call is the remarkable city of Fengdu, believed in days gone by to be the abode of devils. The 700 temples with their bizarre statuary on Mingshan Hill, bear testimony to the city’s notoriety as the “City of Ghosts”. Meals: B L D Overnight: 5 star cruise

Day 4 Yangtze River Cruise Thu 21 August Today your boat will navigate the magnificent Yangtze Gorges passing through the shortest and narrowest gorge - Qutang Gorge (8km), in the morning and then you’ll enter the second gorge - Wu Gorge, (44km), with peaks rising to dizzying heights above the river. Following this you take an exciting ride by small craft along the swift waters of the Shennong Stream, one of the many tributaries in this fertile area. Here the imposing mountains, dramatic precipices and crystal clear waters are quite spectacular. Later, return to the boat and enter the Xiling Gorge, which is the last and longest of the Three Gorges. At 75 kilometres, it was renowned for its swift currents and dangerous shoals, before it was flooded by the Three Gorges Dam . Meals: B L D Overnight: 5 star cruise

Day 5 Yangtze to Wuhan Fri 22 August After breakfast on the boat, leave the cruiser behind at Sandouping and disembark to board a coach for a visit to one of mankind’s greatest engineering feats to date; the construction site of the Three Gorges Dam Project. Construction formally began in 1994 and the body of the dam was completed in 2003, with the final construction completed in 2008. The dam wall is 2,335 metres long, 185 metres wide at the bottom, tapering up to 18 metres at the top. Spectacular views and scenery from the top of the dam wall constantly change as the water level continues to rise. This area offers some of the most magnificent natural scenery in China. After lunch, transfer to the airport and fly to Guilin, a beautiful city nestled among rice paddy fields and known for its rice and sugar cane production. The afternoon is free to enjoy the hotel’s health and leisure club and indoor pool or perhaps a walk around the lake. This evening there’s a chance to see the ‘cormorant fishermen’ at work teaching the cormorants how to catch fish! Meals: B L D Overnight Guilin

Day 7 Guilin Sun 24 August This morning visit the Guilin Dairy Farm (more than 250 cows) which was founded in 1953 by the local government. For more than 50 years, this dairy farm has been providing high quality organic fresh milk for Guilin citizens and is regarded as a successful example of farming dairy cows under the hot and humid tropical climate conditions in southern China. Afterwards take a tour of Reed Flute Caves, a spectacular world of stalactites, stone pillars and rock formations. This afternoon visit a milking water buffalo farm adjacent to a lake and irrigation reservoir. Traditionally people in southern China have preferred to drink soybean milk, however following China’s economic development, more and more people are demanding cow milk products, especially fresh milk. In order to meet the current market demand, in 2003 the Government encouraged wealthy entrepreneurs to invest in farming. The farm manager is a graduate of Quangxi University and a former employee of the Quangxi Water Buffalo Technology Institute near Nanning. In a joint venture with several friends he rented 200mu (13ha) pasture and started the farm. Now the farm has 600 total head with 200 cows in milk. Meals: B L D Overnight Guilin
