e came to the United States from Russia ten years ago when I wasinvited by theCommunityCollege ofDenver to teach students aboutRussianpresident Gorbachev and Perestroika. At first, the cultural shock was great. Irememberwefeltinspiredandhopelessatthesametime.WhenIsawsignsonthestreetbenchesthatread,"Rentabench!"Iwrotetomymother,"Lifehereisveryexpensive.Eventosleeponabenchpeoplehavetopayrent."
