Vocabulary

• A rate is a ratio that compares two quantities measured in different units.

• The unit rate is the rate for one unit of a given quantity. Unit rates have a denominator of 1.

Rate Examples (more than 1)

• 250 words in 5 minutes

• 92 pages read in 8 minutes

• 225 miles in 5 hours

• $3.25 for 5 bananas

Unit Rate Examples (only 1)

• 50 words per minute

• 11.5 pages per minute

• 45 miles per hour

• $0.65/banana

Find Unit Rate (Divide to get it):

150 ÷ 2 = 75 heartbeats per minute.

REMEMBER

ONCE YOU HAVE A UNIT RATE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO MULTIPLY BY ANY NUMBER TO FIND ANOTHER VALUE.

EXAMPLE

50 WORDS PER MINUTE YOU CAN TYPE. HOW MANY WORDS CAN YOU TYPE IN 6 MINUTES……

50 X 6 = 300
