T heir journeys are difficult. But their spirits

are so resilient. The kids who come to us face the most complex medical challenges imaginable. Every child’s bridge to recovery is unique. Sometimes, the best way to measure progress is by their smiles as our Care Beyond the Bedside gets them out of bed, back to living and back to being a kid.

It started with a knee injury that never healed.

Then her foot would lock, turn in and seize, shaking

uncontrollably for hours. We went from specialist to

specialist and found no answers. Sierra ended up unable

to walk. Her leg was immobilized in a full brace.

We were told Sierra might never walk again. Ranken Jordan became our family’s bridge. Ranken Jordan’s team approach was exceptional.

Today, Sierra is walking again. She’s a sophomore

in college and, inspired by her experience at Ranken Jordan,

she’s majoring in psychology. She now has a different

set of eyes — she sees the person who is vulnerable, scared

or struggling because she’s been that person.

We talk all the time about the privilege to be in

this town with a bridge hospital so Sierra could heal

and our family wasn’t fractured in the process.

We want every child and family who needs Ranken

Jordan to have the opportunity to come here.

internal team, there are other important companions who

support our kids and their families on their journeys.

It’s important to have a place and a team working together that understands and adjusts to each child’s unique needs. Ranken Jordan is that place. dr. david anderson is a renowned pediatric orthopedic surgeon specializing in treating children with cerebral palsy. He helped found

the Orthopedic Rehabilitation Clinic at Ranken Jordan. He has referred hundreds of kids to our inpatient and outpatient programs.

Our daughter Lily is in her first

semester at Princeton University now.

She has it in her bones that she

wants to be a doctor. Volunteering

glimmer of her passion.

s Jeana tells us in her story of volunteering here for over twenty

years, the smiles at Ranken Jordan really are special.

When you see a child smile for the first time after coming out of a coma, it’s magical. When you see a preemie smile who has had to face obstacles in a few short months that most people won’t face in the course of a lifetime, it’s transformative.

One of our breakthrough understandings at Ranken Jordan is this: Smiling is healing.

As a Pediatric Bridge Hospital, we take care of kids who face the most complex medical challenges imaginable in their journeys from acute care to home. Building these bridges that will get kids home to their families requires a passionately dedicated team along with technology to construct something entirely new and tailored to each child’s situation.

Yet for these kids, as for all children, the opportunity to learn and play and experience

love, curiosity, delight and laughter helps them grow and thrive to reach their unique potential.

By getting kids out of bed and back to being kids, our Care Beyond the Bedside model makes more recovery possible. The kids’ smiles are both a result of healing and a catalyst for more as they continue their journeys home and beyond to their best lives with their families.

This year, as we work toward building the funds for our expansion, I continue to be reminded of its importance for the kids we serve. There is a tremendous need for this level of care. Over the last three years there’s been a 37% increase in kids with medical complexity in our community and the trend line continues to rise.

St. Louis is fortunate to have a Ranken Jordan. There are a lot of communities that have kids like ours that don’t have access to this kind of care. We’ve received inquiries from hospitals across the country that are interested in learning more about

how we bridge the gap for kids when the crisis has passed but they are still too sick to go home.

Ranken Jordan is also influencing the conversation on the future of healthcare. We deliver significant value from a cost and care perspective. We’ve testified at state and federal hearings over the past year to determine the way forward for healthcare. It’s so important that the system works for our kids. We’re doing our part to make sure it does.

In October, we participated in the largest single fundraising opportunity we’ve had in the history of our organization. Rungevity honored us as one of two charity partners for the Quinn Family Foundation Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon and Half Marathon. With the Quinn Family Foundation match, we raised $432,810. This amount will appear on the financials in next year’s report. We are so grateful to all the friends and supporters who participated.

We increased our awareness in St. Louis, and the funds will make an incredible impact on what we’re able to do over this next year. Insurance simply doesn’t cover everything our kids need, but thanks to our generous donors, that never stops us from doing what’s right.

Ranken Jordan has a profound presence in people’s lives regardless of their connection. If you spend any time at all here, it will change your life.

It’s about giving hope to kids and families who feel hope is lost.

It’s about the power of love and connection.

It’s about being able to do impossible things.

It’s about living when you think your life is over.
