The mission of the Ramiro Barrera Middle School library program is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information enabling them to be literate, life long learners.

Library Hours: 7:30am - 3:45pm

Policies:* Students may check out two books. * Check out is for 10 school days. * There is a 5¢ fine per school day for any book that is late. * Reference books may be checked out overnight. * There is a 25¢ a day fine for late reference books. * Students may not check out books or materials if they have overdue books or fines over 50¢. * Students must pay for books that are damaged

The Tejas Star Book Award was created by the Region One ESC Library Advisory Committee to promote reading in general and for readers to discover the cognitive and economic benefits of bilingualism and multilingualism. All the children of Texas have the opportunity to select their favorite book from the Tejas Star list during the 2008-2009 school year.

Copyright and Fair Use Guidelines for Teachers

The following chart was designed to inform classroom teachers of their rights under the copyright law and copyright guidelines of the United States. Copyright and the notion of intellectual property was written into the Constitution of the United States to promote learning and the useful arts---and was designed to be supportive of the work of educators.

The purpose of copyright protection is repeatedly and mistakenly reported to be for the protection of authors and others intellectual property owners. In fact, copyright has been always been for the purpose of benefiting society as a whole and particularly the institutions of education. Learning, or "science" in the language of the Enlightenment and the Constitution, was to be promoted by allowing authors and others rights for a limited time for their work. The first copyright act written into federal law was titled "The Education Act."

Teachers in the classroom make the decisions closest to the field of instruction and it is teachers that have been the greatest rights---rights that even their districts do not have. This Copyright Chart was designed to inform teachers of what they may do under the law.

The accelerated reading program is a computer program that tests students on books they read from the library. It is based on three simple steps that form the foundation for the self-paced, individualized reading program. First, the program allows each student to select his own reading material. Next, it allows students to read at their own level and pace themselves--often far ahead of actual grade level. The last step involves testing. The students take multiple-choice tests on the computer in their classroom. The tests are carefully designed to verify that the students have read the book. Because students get recognition for increasing the difficulty of the books they read, as well as the quantity, students are encouraged to explore more challenging works. The program then will electronically assess reading levels, abilities, etc., which makes for a wonderful assessment tool for teachers. Professional Philosophy: Perseverance* Graduated from The University of Texas Pan American with a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and a minor in Bilingual/Bi-culture in December 1992.* Worked as a 3rd grade teacher for ten years. * Started working as a librarian at Roma Intermediate School on August 2000. * Obtained Masters in Library Science degree from Sam Houston State University in May 2002. * Obtained Master Technology Teacher certification from The University of Texas at Brownsville, TX., in July 2005.Having been a classroom teacher for ten years gives me an interesting perspective and valuable insight regarding what staff and students need in this new digital age. My goal as a librarian is to encourage students to read and help them become life-long learners.
