― Benjamin Franklin. . On a similar note a two-day CBSE workshop on Capacity Building programme on

classroom management was conducted at Ramagya School. The teachers were involved in the process of

classroom management to understand benefits of effective classroom management and its techniques. The

workshop was held on 15th and 16th February 2018. Several schools from Noida besides the host, Ramagya

School, Noida participated in the workshop. The Resource Persons for the workshop were Ms. Deepti Sharma

-Principal Pragyan School and Dr. C.B Mishra, School Head Presidium School. A dance programme dedicated

to Goddess Durga marked the commencement of the workshop. An activity on effective use of clear

instructions for better performance was conducted by Ms. Deepti Sharma. The participants were then divided

into 10 groups

The quote “The illiterate of the century will not be those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn”-formed the

guiding light of the session. AH-HA and OH-NO moments of respective teachers were discussed. The morning

session covered the understanding of classroom management and components of classroom management.

The need for a teacher to remain updated on content was stressed upon in the Content Management segment.

What forms the physical environment of a classroom was discussed at length.

The session after lunch began with an interesting activity, in which each group was asked to illustrate and

present their future classroom. It was then followed by an introduction and a discussion on Classroom

Management on 3 Cs

27

Content Management

Conduct Management and

Covenant Management

Seating arrangement is also imperative for effective classroom management. Each one was given the task to

suggest different seating arrangements and their advantages and disadvantages. One of the most important

challenges for a teacher is to manage time. A table relating to time management was explained. This included

four quadrants – I (Important, Urgent Task), II (Important, Not Urgent Task), III (Not important but Urgent Task)

and IV (Not important and Not Urgent task). One needed to identify the type of task and complete the table

accordingly. Three questionnaires based on Teaching Style, Learning Style and Classroom Management Style

was also given to the participants. The participants could easily establish and understand a relation between

these three styles.

On day 2 the topics, Conduct Management and Covenant Management were discussed at length..

The session started with an explanation on the difference between rules, procedures and routines. Each group

was asked to design five rules for a secondary and senior secondary class. Rules are fixed principles that

determine conduct. They need to be precise and clear. It is better to involve children while making classroom

rules. Consequences and rewards can strengthen childrens’ appropriate behaviour. Each group once again

enacted different situations and shared some of their experiences.

It was stressed that student-teacher relationship is the cornerstone of classroom management. If a teacher

has a good relationship with students, then students readily accept the rules and procedures and the

disciplinary action that follows their violation. The importance of building a rapport with the children was also

discussed. It was suggested that, at the start of every period, teachers should spend five minutes to interact

with the children to build that desired rapport. The most effective teacher-student relationships are

characterised by the specific teacher behaviour.

The need and importance of inclusive education was highlighted, followed by an inspiring movie. It was

discussed that activities are an integral part of the teaching-learning process. Teachers must select and plan

activities that result in a high level of student learning and involvement. Several management problems can

occur during the transition period, and to explain this concept an activity was assigned to each group. The

workshop concluded with an open house where teachers posed their queries to the Resource Persons and

which were effectively answered by them.

Outcome

It was a fun-filled and enriching session, full of hands’-on activities for the teachers to be engrossed in and

learn from. Teachers look forward now to applying these strategies effectively in their day-to-day classroom

deliveries. Just as good management enhances learning by creating a good environment for teaching, similarly

effective instruction contributes to a well-managed class.
