A SMALLER CARBON FOOTPRINT

fuel saving on trains

OUR OBJECTIVE IS TO MAKE OUR TRAINS 5% MORE FUEL EFFICIENT DURING THE FRANCHISE

OUR PLANS FOR 2012/13

Shutting down

engines

We’re making sure that by

December 2012, our drivers

have clear information about

shutting down engines at

stations

Driving our trains efficiently

A group of drivers and managers have been working together to share

experiences on safe, punctual and fuel-efficient driving. By March 2013 we’ll

prepare some simple advice to help every driver.

Our timetable

Work to increase line speed

and reduce journey times will

mean we burn more fuel.

By November 2012, we’ll

understand what effect this

will have on our carbon

footprint

Page 15: Rail revival presentation

A SMALLER CARBON FOOTPRINT

fuel saving on trains – Project updates

Meridian Energy Saving Mode

Energy Saving Mode is now working well.

We have seen the planned reduction in

the number of hours each engine runs,

but we’re looking at how we can make

even better use of the technology.

Diesolift Fuel Additive

We’ve been using Diesolift in our 15x fleet. The

additive is designed to improve fuel economy and

reduce emissions.

Unfortunately, we’ve had various problems with

the fuel in these units and we’re still working to

find out what effect Diesolift is having on this.

We’ll keep you posted…

Driving Trains Efficiently

After good initial progress, we have had to

temporarily postpone the work with our

volunteer drivers to investigate fuel-

efficient driving.

This is back in the 2012/13 Environmental

Plan so watch this space…

Page 16: Rail revival presentation

A SMALLER CARBON FOOTPRINT

saving energy in our buildings

WE AIM TO USE 10% LESS ENERGY IN OUR BUILDINGS BY 2014

OUR PLANS FOR 2012/13

Fitting Smart Meters to our stations

Our larger buildings are already fitted with smart

electricity meters.

Working with our sister company, South West

Trains, we’ll install smart meters at more stations

so that we can get accurate data.

Reporting our energy use

Our managers need good information so

that they can work with you to manage

energy use at your site.

We’ll improve the energy reporting

system we’ve created to meet that need.

Upgrading our Stations

Major works at Nottingham & Leicester give us a great opportunity to

improve energy efficiency. We’ll install advanced, automatic lighting

controls to ensure we get the best light levels around our stations.

We’re also working to improve insulation of buildings where we’re

doing upgrade works

Page 17: Rail revival presentation

Station Environment Champions

Each route area has an Environment

Champion to help implement energy

efficiency and environmental

improvements.

As well as organising local events for our

annual Green Week, they have helped to:

•Identify areas for improved lighting

controls

•Implemented the new recycling scheme

•Carried out awareness work including our

first Station Energy Awareness Week

Keeping the heat in

The team at Etches Park have shown how

a simple measure can have a big impact.

By making sure doors to the south

maintenance sheds were closed when not

being used, Etches Park reduced their gas

use by over 50% in 2011/12

Investing in Energy Efficiency

During 2011/12, we have been working

with Network Rail to arrange investments

in our stations for energy efficiency.

We’re going to be installing more efficient

lighting in a number of stations over the

next few months.

We have also secured funding for further

lighting improvements in Network Rail’s

Control Period 5 budgets (2015-19)

Page 18: Rail revival presentation

A WAY WITH WASTE

In 2011, we introduced a new way with waste. This has helped

to increase our recycling rates from just 35% to over 70%

After collecting waste from our stations, SITA UK take our waste to

a number of different waste sorting facilities. Once sorted, the

different materials are then taken on to recyclers who make

something new out of it.

What a load

of rubbish! We handle over

160 tonnes of

rubbish every

month

Page 19: Rail revival presentation

A WAY WITH WASTE

HAVING INCREASED OUR RECYCLING RATES TO OVER 70%, WE NOW WANT TO MAKE

CONTINUAL IMPROVEMENTS FOR THE REST OF THE CURRENT FRANCHISE

OUR PLANS FOR 2012/13

We want passengers to help recycle their waste

at our stations

We’ll introduce new public recycling facilities at our

key stations including newspaper recycling bins and

new recycling points

Recycling on Train

With ideas from our On-train teams,

we believe we can find a way to

improve waste recycling on board

our services.

Improve our recycling at St Pancras

International

Our recycling facilities at St Pancras International

are provided by Network Rail. We’ll work with them

to improve our arrangements for recycling of both

train and office wastes.

BEING A RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS

BEING A RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS IS ABOUT MANAGING ENVIRONMENTAL RISKS,

PLAYING A PART IN OUR LOCAL COMMUNITIES AND SUPPORTING CHARITIES

Community Events

Over the last 2 years, our stations

teams have organised and been

involved with numerous community

events including planting flowers

and painting at our stations, to

community pageants and art

competitions for children.

EMS Recertification

This year our Engineering

Team were successfully re-

certified to the International

Standard for Environmental

Management, ISO14001.

Cyclescheme

Our Cyclescheme benefit has

helped over 100 people get

new cycles and safety gear

and say ‘on yer bike’ to tax –

BEING A RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS

BEING A RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS IS ABOUT MANAGING ENVIRONMENTAL RISKS,

PLAYING A PART IN OUR LOCAL COMMUNITIES AND SUPPORTING CHARITIES

Charity Charter Trains

Together we’ve supported several

fundraising charter trains. The company

has given the train and our colleagues

have donated their time and skills.

One of the most successful charity charters

was the Mid-Norfolk Marauder which

raised £25,000 for Railway Children

Staff Fundraising

Throughout the year people all across the

company have raised money for charities

ranging from Railway Children to

MacMillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie,

the Poppy Appeal and countless others.

Direct Donations

By completing your annual Tell Me

Survey, together we completed

enough surveys for the company to

donate nearly £1500 to 3 charities

Supporting Fundraisers

Since launching our Employee Charity

Support programme, we’ve donated £2,500

and 132 pairs of First Class tickets to

London for individuals who are fundraising

Page 22: Rail revival presentation

BEING A RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS

Managing our environmental risks

OUR PLANS FOR 2012/13

Environmental Procedures

We’re going to introduce the best-practice

approach used by our Engineering depots

to the rest of our business.

We will also introduce the checking and

audit processes to make sure that this is

effective at managing our most important

environmental risks

Environmental Training

To support the development of

these procedures, we will provide

managers with the training,

information and guidance they need

to make sure our systems work

well.

Controlling our biggest

environmental risk

Storing and handling our fuel is our

biggest environmental risk. We’re

going to audit our systems and

controls to make sure we’re as

good as we can be.

Page 23: Rail revival presentation

BEING A RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS

BEING PART OF OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY AND SUPPORTING CHARITY WORK

OUR PLANS FOR 2012/13

Charitable Support

We’ll make it clearer for everyone how the

company supports charitable activities and

how you can get support for your

fundraising.

We’ll provide an area on the Platform with

all the information you need.

Community Events

In 2012/13, more and more people

will have the chance to get out and

about in our local communities,

from community work around our

network to fundraising and

volunteering.

The Environment

● Environmental Plan available to download from eastmidlandstrains.co.uk

● We are working in partnership with Metro newspapers and SITA UK to install recycling facilities for the general public at our stations.

● We are putting the final pieces together for a project to invest £0.25m in improving station lighting and make it more energy efficient

● As part of the station redevelopments at Leicester and Nottingham, we are installing a lighting control system called LiGo which automatically switches lights on and off and automatically dims them in response to the natural light available.

Page 25: Rail revival presentation

Cycles

● We have increased cycle storage across all stations

● Have plans to double existing storage as funds become available

● We have just bid for £2.7m from ATOC to achieve the above.

● Sheffield Cycle Hub is due to begin in January.

● Won Partnership Working Award in Parliament two weeks ago - awarded by the All Party Cycle Committee-Examples include:

● working with Derby City Council to double the level of cycle provision at Derby station, as well as key improvement schemes at Leicester and Nottingham stations working in partnership with Leicester City Council and Nottingham City Council.
