Case Study #3Name of Company: L B Foster Rail Technologies

Location of Company: Sheffield (http://www.lbfoster.co.uk/)

Nature of Business: Rail Engineering (friction management systems and track components)

Nature of Test/Trial: Arc Diverter - proving of mechanical integrity of design/construction

TRL: 8-9

Assets Required: Plain Line Track, DMU, 2000 passes over equipment

Duration: 5 days

Synopsis: The arc diverter that had been in service was proving unreliable in terms of physical integrity – this became a true collaborative venture between L B Foster, Mott Macdonald and Network Rail. The aim of the trial was to prove to the customer the physical integrity of the design – this required 2,000 passes from our DMU Test Loco and the trial was completed and the product is now in the ground and operational at Blackfriars.

Case Study #12Name of Company: Britax PSV

Location of Company: Worcester (http://psv-wypers.com/)

Nature of Business: Commercial vehicle wiper systems

Nature of Test/Trial: Scope out (1 day) and conduct short term user trial (4 days) of product

TRL: 4-7

Assets Required: DMU cab and multiple operations/cycles

Duration: 1 day (scoping - completed) + 4 days (product fitting/trialling – booked)

Synopsis: The aim of this trial is to use our test DMU ‘mule’ for vehicle-borne testing, trialling and proving of train wiper systems. The first day required the DMU ‘mule’ to be available for a few circuits of the test loop. Additionally, this activity led to a detailed measurement of the in-cab area for siting of the various control mechanisms and verifying the interface between the wiper control system(s) and the DMU’s on-board systems.

Case Study #2Name of Company: CPS Rail

Location of Company: West Sussex (http://www.cps-rail.co.uk/)

Nature of Business: Specialist coatings & graffiti protection systems

Nature of Test/Trial: Graffiti protection trial

TRL: 8/9

Assets Required: Trackside furniture, rolling stock

Duration: 3 days

Synopsis: Infrastructure identified and prepared in the run up to Rail Live 2014 – live demonstrations carried out to visiting Network Rail personnel over the 2 days of the show.
