Trackside Top of Rail
Friction Management
The LB Foster Rail Technologies’ PROTECTOR IV ®
system* is used to apply KELTRACK®
trackside product to the top of rail (TOR).
Designed for positioning prior to a curve,
the PROTECTOR IV ® addresses issues such
as noise, lateral forces and corrugated rail.
The TOR PROTECTOR IV® delivers manybenefits including:
• Significant reductions in noise levels
• Ability to target specific curves
• Reduction in rail corrugations
• Mitigates against the onset of Rolling Contact
Fatigue (RCF)
• Deferment of costly rail grinding and replacement
• Reductions of lateral forces by up to 50%
• Decreased potential for derailment
• Automatic vehicle detection and customisable
output settings
KELTRACK® Top of
Rail Friction Modifier
KELTRACK® contains a suspension of active
friction modifier materials and controls friction at
the top of the rail without impacting on braking or
traction. KELTRACK® is applied via the
PROTECTOR IV ® Friction Management System
as a site-specific solution method.
KELTRACK® Trackside and the PROTECTOR IV ®
is an ideal solution for mixed traffic, passenger
and freight (including heavy haul), commuter
and tramway applications. It has no effect on
braking or signalling and is environmentally
friendly, non-toxic and non-flammable.

Friction Control
Between Wheel and Rail
As part of our dynamic, technology-driven approach
to providing solutions, we offer a range of proprietary
products to control friction between the wheel and
the rail for commuter/passenger and freight rail
industries.
They are designed to reduce, increase or control
friction at the wheel/rail interface in order to
minimise costs and improve performance.
KELTRACK® On Board (KOB)
We are now able to offer mobile liquid application
systems to ensure accurate application of our
friction modifier.
The KOB technology delivers KELTRACK® to
the top of the rail without affecting the traction
behaviour of the vehicle. The system can be
controlled manually, via GPS or directly by vehicle
data, to allow application of the required amount
of friction modifier in relation to speed and location.
Key Benefits: Curve squeal mitigation, decreased
corrugation growth rates and a reduction in lateral
forces.
Solid Stick Solutions
Our on-board solid stick systems are applied via
vehicle-mounted assemblies. Each is specifically
designed and built for individual customers.
Kelsan® LCF Wheel Flange Lubricant
(Low Coefficient of Friction)
A 100% dry, environmentally friendly solution
that avoids contamination of the track structure,
ballast or vehicle equipment.
Key Benefits: Extend rail gauge and flange life.
Kelsan® HPF Top of Rail Friction
Modifier (High Positive Friction)
Applied directly to the wheel treads of the rail vehicle,
HPF provides a micron-thick ‘thin film’ layer
between the wheel tread and the top of the rail.
Key Benefit: Reduces TOR wheel squeal noise,
short pitch corrugations and lateral forces.

Traction Enhancement
11
Trackside Traction
Enhancement Systems
The Traction Gel Applicator (TGA)* applies
ALLEVIATE® Traction Gel to the railhead to enhance
friction at the wheel/rail interface. Used to solve a
variety of issues, the TGA is a localised solution that
targets specific zones where railhead contamination
is an issue or where extra traction is needed.
The system offers the following benefits:
• Helps combat the build-up of leaf contamination
• Provides an alternative to rail-based delivery vehicles
• Provides extra traction at steep inclines/declines
• Reduces the occurrence of SPADS
Strategic positioning of TGA units can provide
braking benefits as trains approach stations
and traction improvements on departure.
ALLEVIATE®
To complement the range of hardware solutions
available from LB Foster Rail Technologies (UK),
the company has recently developed a friction
modifier in the form of a traction enhancer -
ALLEVIATE®. ALLEVIATE® has been developed
using LB Foster Rail Technologies’ extensive
knowledge of friction modifiers and the behaviour
and effect of the particles at the wheel/rail interface.
The formulation of ALLEVIATE® has been supported
by extensive analysis at all stages, including field
trials, laboratory study and stringent performance
testing.
Trackside Anti-Ice Applicators
To combat the increasing challenge created by
frozen conductor rails, we have developed our
Anti-Ice Applicator (AIA).
Ice forms an insulating layer which prevents the
train from obtaining traction current. Our solution
is delivered to the top of the conductor rail and
is carried along the rail by the collector shoe,
thus preventing the build-up of ice.
Seasonal Service
Where the TGA or AIA is used for seasonal delivery,
we offer a comprehensive decommissioning and
recommissioning service on the client’s behalf.
This involves the removal from site of units at the end
of the season, refurbishment and storage during the
close season and reinstallation prior to the live season.
