Most-Played Christmas Songs These are Country radio’s most-played Christmas songs for the last seven days, according to Mediabase. Fun Facts: We ran into Stroudavarious Records CEO, noted producer and musician James Stroud at a Music City eatery last week. He told us that he produced and played drums on the Vince Vance & The Valiants cut, “All I want For Christmas is You.” And, during an email battle between Regent VP/Programming Bob Moody and KMDL/Lafayette, LA PD/middayer Scott Bryant over who was the first to play the song, lead singer Lisa Layne told them her late husband was a jock in Tyler, TX in 1989, and he was the first-ever to play the song.

Country Station Count Steady Country remains the No. 1 music format in America, with 2,024 Country stations as of the end of November, according to M Street. It had been the top format overall until June 2008, when News/Talk took over the top spot. Although Country has lost 344 stations since 1998, the format is down only 23 stations since 2004. And Country is the No. 1 music format in terms of multi-casts, with 84 HD2 and one HD3 station. Nearly 74% of Country stations broadcast on FM.

The seats are in the station’s private box at the venue and the winning bid’s payment will be given to a local food bank or mission.

Industry News Lost in the post-CMA Awards craziness was the little-known story of the impromptu candlelit dinner enjoyed by more than 500 radio trip winners. When downtown Nashville lost power for several hours on awards day (11/12), What A Trip! and the Wildhorse Saloon were forced to scramble, bringing in generator trucks, trucking in food from Opryland and firing up the wax and string for the pre-awards dinner. The show must go on... BMI/Nashville Assoc. Dir./Sales Jason “Jay” Page has been promoted to Dir./Sales for General Licensing. WWQM/Madison PD Brad Austin discusses his most important songs, albums or concerts: 1. Tom Jones, Wisconsin State Fair, 1994: The first concert I ever emceed. I was working at WMIL & WOKY/Milwaukee. It was a classic “right place, right time” moment [because] I was the only WOKY staffer available. I was 17 and shook like a leaf. I called him “Tommy” as

I intro’d him and bought The Complete Tom Jones that night!2. George Strait/The Chair: George is my all-time favorite artist! This could be one of the best country songs ever written or recorded. I’m a traditionalist at heart and love this song.3. Dan Fogelberg/Hard To Say: My friend Tom Cook, who programs in the AC format, turned me on to Fogelberg a decade ago. I’ve been a fan ever since. 4. Earl Thomas Conley/Holding Her & Loving You: Just a classic ‘80s country smash. One part love song, one part heartbreak song. Genius!5. Taylor Swift, York, PA: I was programming WGTY and Taylor came to see me with Scott Borchetta and her mom Andrea. Nobody, including me, knew her beyond a name and a song just barely released called “Tim McGraw.” She played four songs in an Italian restaurant in York after hours. Just the four of us, some of the waitstaff, and Taylor on acoustic guitar. It was like witnessing the birth of a new galaxy. I’m so proud of her and I cherish the pictures from that night; thanks to Andrea for taking some good snaps! A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: Most of the ‘70s rock era. Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, etc. In general, it’s not my thing. An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Opera. God bless ‘em. • An album you played or listened to incessantly: Mark Chesnutt’s Greatest Hits and Eric Church’s Sinners Like Me.

The Enemy Within (continued from page 1) But how can radio be revitalized or even remain relevant without the very people who create compelling content? Cutbacks in recent years have severely depleted radio’s creative brain trust and air talent. And now the recession and economic crisis are decimating the ranks of the very people who drive and create the content that is so desperately needed. I read the comments of many of today’s radio leaders, who say the goal is to provide quality content across multiple platforms, whether they emanate from a tower or the internet. But who is going to create and deliver this compelling content? Voice-tracking and other modern means of delivery have killed the small market breeding grounds for talent and programmers. And now, we’re driving away our best talent by laying-off those who make the most money at a station. Then I watch the congressional hearings, where the politicians who have gotten us into this mess chastise the heads of the Big 3 automakers, screaming about the mistakes they have made in leadership. And I wonder about radio’s leadership since the Telecom Act of 1996 brought us consolidation. Were mistakes
