Question: How did you react to colonel's approach to security? For his fellow villagers who survived the atrocities of civil war, what determines the difference between being paranoid and being naive.

Response

Colonels actions were a bit excessive, however his actions were effective. Colonel did not target company men for the sake of blatantly hurting them, rather to protect his siblings and the rest of Imperi. He sought the means necessary to make sure his village would have safety and security.

Quotes● " I learned that you are not free until you stop others from making you feel

worthless." (125) - Colonel● "It took a week to set power back up and for the bar to be operational again.

During that time, the towns nightly natural sounds slowly returned."(92)-Colonel and Miller blew up the mining company's electrical grid as a result things in town returned to normal for a while.

● "John had urinated in the bottle with the intention of throwing it at the wall inside the town hall building. But before he completed his task, someone turned the tables on him."(79)

-Colonel, using violence, was able to prevent John from causing disruption and damage.

Response, cont.

Survivors of the war were paranoid because they had been exposed to the horrors of war and their instinct is to flee during danger. Children who were born after the war were naïve because they hadn't lived through the dangers of the war.

Quotes"When women and children.../Saw the 4x4 vehicles filled with armed men, they dropped whatever they were carrying and ran toward town to alert their families or into the bushes.../When some of the men learned that these were personnel for the company, they.../called for calm, but half the population had already made it far into the forest and only returned days later." (Chapter 5, page 74)

"The man pointed in the path and shouted, someone is coming again to do away with us all. Run everyone!.../ most of the others already had their bundles ready to run into the bushes." (41)

The villagers are quick to respond to any potential dangers, as the last time armed men came into Imperi the town was put under attack and destroyed.
