Elapsed Time
Racing Through Elapsed Time
Created by Laura Candler
Racing Through Elapsed Time can be played in cooperative
learning teams or in math centers. The game comes with 16
problem cards, but you can adapt it by creating your own
problem cards with the blank templates on pages 7 and 8.
Before you allow students to play Racing Through Elapsed
Time alone, be sure to model the directions for the class.
Display the directions on page 3 and the game board on
page 4. Review the rules of play using a small group of
students to demonstrate. This game was not designed to
teach students how to solve elapsed time problems; it’s a
review game that students who are reasonably proficient can
play on their own while you work with a small group. You
can actually use the game while working with a small
group, but you would downplay the competitive elements
and provide help as needed.
If your students are having difficulty grasping how to solve
elapsed time problems, you may want to have them make
individual clocks using the patterns in the Math Stations for
Middle Grades ebook described below. You can also show
them this great video that features two students and shows
how to solve elapsed time problems on a number line:

Common Core Alignment information
can be found on page 10 of this Mini Pack.
If you enjoy this Mini Pack, you’ll also enjoy Math Stations for
Middle Grades. This ebook is designed for grades 3 through 8 and
includes directions for setting up math centers in your classroom.
You can purchase it from my TeachersPayTeachers store or from

Activities in Racing Through Elapsed Time
are aligned with the standards listed below.
Measurement Content Standards
3rd Grade
3.MD.1 Tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time
intervals in minutes. Solve word problems involving addition and
subtraction of time intervals in minutes, e.g., by representing the
problem on a number line diagram.
4th Grade
4.MD.2 Use the four operations to solve word problems involving
distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and
money, including problems involving simple fractions or decimals,
and problems that require expressing measurements given in a
larger unit in terms of a smaller unit.
Standards for Mathematical Practices (3rd through 5th Grade)
None of the 5th measurement standards are directly addressed by the
activities in Racing Through Elapsed Time. However, because the
activities in this ebook do involve problem solving, they are aligned
with Common Core Math Standards for Mathematical Practices for
grades 3, 4, and 5. Also, these activities can provide an excellent
review of elapsed time measurement in 5th grade.
