Kindling the Light Rabbi Frank Muller

With the end of the school year close at hand, ou~ thoughts begin to tum to the more carefree days of summer. For the residents of Littleton, Colorado, however, the memories of the tragedy at Columbine High School will linger for a long time to come.

It is all too easy to view this horrible massacre as an isolated occurrence perpetrated by a couple of sociopaths. But there have been too many such incidents and too many such sociopaths for us to take that short-sighted app~oach. Littleton was the seventh shooting in an American high school in less than two years - all of them the dastardly deeds of students. The rash of threats and school-closings in our area and throughout the state, which followed on the heels of the Colorado tragedy, is a further wake-up call that something is terribly wrong with the way our youth are being raised today. The sad fact is, too many schools have become killing fields. The question is whether w~ have gotten the message, and what our response should be.

Every Sunday morning during the school year, the brightly lit stairwell near the Tamarkin Chapel entrance to the Temple reveals a fundamental principle of our faith that touches my heart every time I see it. On the wall is a verse from Proverbs - those of us who received their religious education at Rodef Sholom remember it well - "Train up a child in the way he shall go, and even when he is old he will not depart from it" (Proverbs 22:6). Therein lies the answer.

My response to the growing problem of youth violence is that both parents and schools must together do a better job of providing a moral foundation for our children. The Hebrew word for parents is " horim", which means "to guide". To raise a moral child, a parent must accept him or herself as the ultimate teacher of moral values. Parenting is not only about techniques, but is a matter of passing on to children ethical values. It's about being a role model more that trying to be a friend. One of the biggest questions in the aftermath of Littleton has been, "Where were the parents?"

While schools should not have to shoulder the responsibility of parents, neit):ler should they engage solely the mind and ignore the heart. In the late 19th century, Herbert Spencer wrote that "education has as its object the foundation of character." Education today must do more to build character and develop conscience. and sensitivity curricula to be put into place in America's schools. The time has come to pay greater attention to ethics and character by making sure they are as important as math and science in a young person's education.

Over the next few months our nation's school teachers, administrators, lawmakers and parents of school-age pupils will have a chance to reflect, to heal and most importantly, to develop a plan of action concerning how to prevent future Littletons. By coming together in a spirit of cooperation, unity and strength, along with the help of God, there is hope for the youth of today - . and tomorrow.

My View from the Bilnah E171il S. Dickstein

Your Temple Board is budgeting a small increase in Temple dues for 1999/00, commensurate with the cost of living. Just as expenses in general go up, so does the cost of running the Temple. While the Dues Committee is ready to consider written requests for dues relief where necessary, recall that our dues are proportionately far less than those of most Temples in Ohio, and consider a voluntary dues increase for the coming year.

Rodef Sholom has been very strong in the activities and services made available to its members. Not a month goes by without an event from Sisterhood, Brotherhood or the Congregational Life Committee; special services and educational offerings, social get-togethers for all ages, and a multitude of life cycle events. We encourage all of you to participate in person as well as by checkbook; in other words, support your Temple.

In the last two months we have installed a new phone system and ·video security system, majorly overdue. The office staff has been trained in the new Temple Tracker computer system. The Temple raffle is June 24th. Brotherhood will take us to a Scrappers game July 8th. Also coming in July is a big event - the Rodef Sholom-Oakland Theater co-productiQn of "Grandma Sylvia's Funeral," a must-see. October 15th is.a nationally known speaker on Ethiopian Jewry. The Junior Youth Group (6-8th graders) invites new members. The prayer-book Hebrew class for nonHebrew speakers led by the Rabbi is open to all.

May saw the farewells from the Board of four stalwarts who have given much of themselves to the Temple - Joan Pass (after 6 years!) Suzyn Schwebel Epstein, Jack Safier and Ira Mirkin. Much public thanks to them for helping to improve Rodef Sholom. Kelly Newman is returning for a full three-year term. Our four new Board members, ready to serve, are Karen Abrams, Arlene Brewster, Barbara Clouse and Bruce Epstein. These four (plus the Rabbi and I) will attend a new-member Board orientation put on by the UARe in Cleveland - and what a motivated and charged-up group we have! Please help them by your participation in your Temple. Thank you and have a good summer.

Thanks to the following Temple volunteers: Freidl Fisher, Lisa Levy, Fran & Mendel Harmon, . Judith Gross, Herb Soss, Lil & Edgar Kornhauser, Sheldon, Jan & Andi Pratt for cooking, serving and cleaning up Easter dinner at St. John's Soup Kitchen. About 50 people were served.

Soinetimes there are too many volunteers, heaven forbid, to work at one time in the soup kitchen. There are other dates that are available to cook, serve and clean-up meals for the less fortunate. You may contact Jan Pratt for further information. Also, St. John's is accepting donations for the soup kitchen due to the fact that last year, government subsidy was cut by almost half.
