Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - AngloGold Ashanti is working closely with expert teams from the provincial governments of North West to get Wesvaal Hospital ready for the treatment and isolation of COVID-19 patients.

“Wesvaal Hospi ta l is fu l ly equipped with 270 beds. AngloGold Ashanti is committed to supporting the multi-stakeholder efforts aimed to curtail the spread of the Covid-19 virus,” Kgomotso Tshaka, Vice Pre-sident: Sustainability, said.

“Apart from the hospitals, we are providing support in a range of other areas to protect those most at risk from the devastating effects of Covid-19.”

AngloGold Ashanti’s support initiatives in Matlosana include the

handover of masks from a local sup-plier on Thursday 9 April as well as care parcels containing groceries, handwash, multipurpose cleaner and a COVID19 information book-let - to social-grant beneficiaries, to help cushion the effects of the 21day

lockdown. Recipients include the elderly, people with disabilities and those receiving childcare grants.

The mine also assist various or-ganisations in Matlosana through the distribution of blankets, food and toiletries.

Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - A total of 120 soldiers were deployed in the Matlosana municipal area on Saturday 4 April to help enforce the lockdown period.

Health MEC Madoda Sambatha accom-panied by Agricultural MEC Desbo Mo-hono’welcomed the soldiers who will help SAPS and the department of Public Safety to keep people off the street.

With the Klerksdorp/Tshepong Hospital Complex the only hospital designated for treat-ment of Coronavirus cases in the province, MEC Sambatha announced that two more hospitals in the area are prepared in case more beds are necessary.

Former mine hospitals, Wesvaal Hospital in Orkney and Stilfontein’s Duff Scott hospital, were identified for these purposes. Both hospi-tals were not in use and when MEC Sambatha visited this past weekend, everything were spick and span to accommodate patients.

“We are satisfied to see the conditions of

these hospitals as they’ll play an important role during this time of the pandemic danger that we are facing,” he said.

The provincial deputy director general of the hospitals and clinics, Polaki Mokatsane said it is not only going to be used for Covid-19, but the possibility is investigated for the hospitals to be used permanently after the lockdown period expires.

MEC Sambatha said that home self-quaran-tine is the problem in North West.

“There was a patient who tested positive in Bloemhof, but he disappeared and was traced to a farm in Welkom,” he said.

Klerksdorp Record also learned that another patient who tested positive in Potchefstroom was also found somewhere in Ekhuruleni in Gauteng.

Sambatha said they identified several hos-tels and guest houses to be used for manda-tory quarantine, because 90% of people are not adhering to the rules.

He said 12 people are in quarantine in one of those identified places in Rustenburg.

“Hierdie aflewerings sal deurgaans

Klerksdorp Record, Klerks-dorp - The North West Depart-ment of Social Development are organising the Klerksdorp Recreation Centre to accom-modate homeless people du- ring the lockdown period.

Last week, the JB Marks Treatment Centre in Potchef-stroom was earmarked as a homeless shelter for the Dr KK District Municipality. According to Petrus Siko, spokesperson of the Department of So-cial Health, this facility has reached its limit. He said 39 people are sheltered there. The Trim Park in Potch started to take in homeless people on Wednesday 8 April.

“People can voluntarily walk to these centers or report to SAPS for further assistance,’’ he said.

President Cyril Ramaphosa said that government should provide homeless people with accommodation during the lockdown period.

Since the lockdown period began, MEC for Social Deve-lopment Boitumelo Moiloa conducted site visits to the homeless people in Bojanala and Dr Kenneth Kaunda to assess their living conditions at the shelters. On her two day expedition to the shelters, Moiloa shared information on Covid-19 with the homeless and cautioned them wash their hands regularly with soap, maintain a social distance and greet others using an elbow or waving hands.

“We appeal to you to stop roaming the streets during this period. Stay here. Don’t even try to escape. Govern-

ment will provide you with the necessary services such as food, blankets and sanitizers. Maintain social distance even when you are sleeping or eat-ing,” Moiloa said.

“We thank good Samaritans who have been providing sup-port to government by bringing food, mattresses and blankets for the homeless people. Equally important we thank law enforcement agencies for working hand in hand with us in these shelters.”

While government is doing everything in its power to take care of the homeless people, Moiloa said there are some challenges such as withdrawal symptoms of substance abuse among some homeless peo-ple at the shelters. She said her department is working in partnership with the Health Department to assist drug addicts.

Most of the homeless came to the North West towns with a hope of getting jobs. One of the homeless, Sherleen Hoffman said she came from Cape Town to look for a job in Rustenburg and later moved to Klerksdorp to try her luck.

“I am grateful for govern- ment to take care of us during this period. We are happy to be housed in this centre (JB Marks). We receive warmth and love in this place,” Hoff-man said.

Another homeless resident, Stephen Diphoko from Gale-shewe, also came to NW looking for a job and stayed in the streets in Klerksdorp CBD with the hope of getting a job some day.

Klerksdorp Record, Cape Town - A Cape Town estate agent appeared in the Magistrates Court in the city for allegedly spreading fake news.

The South African go- vernment welcomed the arrest of Stephen Birch who appeared in court on Tues-day 7 April.

A video of Birch allegedly claiming test kits were con-taminated with the Covid-19 virus went viral recently.

The 54-year-old man was charged for allegedly con-travening Regulation 11 (5) under the Disaster Manage-ment Act.

The case was postponed to 14 July.

Government spokesper-son Phumla Williams said disinformation was unac-ceptable and dangerous to

society and said such acts should be con-demned.

“Government Communications (GCIS) in collaboration with key leading social media platforms contin-ues to work towards curbing disinformation practices within our public information sys-tems.

“We call on communities to work with government and report any person who mis-leads the public with wrong information.

“Help combat Covid-19 and combat fake information and misinformation by reporting to Real411.org,” she said.

Williams said test kits and other equipment used by the health department were of high standards and were ap-proved by the South African Bureau of Standards.

‘n Geregtelike doodsondersoek is begin. Die identiteit van die oorledene is onbekend.

Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - Recipients of SASSA grants will have to wait a bit longer to receive their grants in May.

SASSA announced on Wednes-day 8 April that from May, the dis-ability and older person’s grants will only be paid from the 4th day of the month.

All other grants will be paid from

the 6th of every month. This decision was made to protect

old people and people with disabili-ties against the month end rush at payment outlets.

Busisiwe Memela, SASSA CEO, said they were compelled to review the payment dates after the chaos experienced on 30 March when grants for older people and those

with disabilities were brought for-ward.

“Impatient child support grant beneficiaries could not wait for the 1st of April and descended upon payment channels as early as 30 March. This posed all sorts of health challenges and it became difficult at some stores and ATM’s to maintain social distancing,’’ she said.

“Some older persons use one card to also receive child support and foster child grants. In such cases they will be able to access all linked grants from the 4th of every month.’’

Once the money is in the account, it will remain there until it is nee- ded.

“Money deposited into your ac-

count is safe and will not be taken back if not used. There is no need to rush to withdraw cash on the first day we deposit it into your account.

“The SASSA card can be used as a debit card to pay for purchases, therefore it is not necessary to with-draw cash and thereafter purchase goods with the cash,” Memela plea-ded with beneficiaries.

Sorry to say, but COVID-19 will be in the headlines for a while to come.

As a weekly newspaper it is our chal-lenge to bring to you up to date informa-tion on COVID-19. In a fast changing world we are living in, it is much easier said than done. But we try.

While international, national and pro-vincial information is readily available at the click of a button on the World Wide Web, it is a whole diff erent ballgame when you want to fi nd out what is going on close to your home.

That is where your community news-paper comes in. We want to inform you what is happening locally. We want to be there for you in times where you are not sure what the day of tomorrow holds.

Send us your questions, send a message to your loved one, comment on our stories, and give story ideas or share some helpful information (see p 2 of this edition).

Yes, we had the choice to seize publication for the whole lockdown pe-riod. We chose to keep our community informed and we were astounded by the positive response to our fi rst digital newspaper last week. Thank you.

We made history, even if it left a bitter taste in the mouth for some.

We love print. The smell of it. The black ink coming off on your fi ngertips paging through your newspaper.

It was hard to make the move to digital. For the time being, we must get used to it. We’ve come to grips with the fact that printed newspaper is on the extinction list, but not yet… One day our printers will roar again and a smiling newspaper salesman will sell you your copy of your favourite newspaper on a street corner somewhere.

But for now, bear with us. Thank you for reading our digital newspaper. Sup-port our advertisers, because they help us in keeping you informed.

“Rather, ten times die in the surf, heralding the way to a new world, than stand idly on the

shore.” – Florence Nightingale.

Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - In the turbulent times in which we currently fi nd ourselves, huge emphasis is being placed on the major role that healthcare workers play in our society.

Nurses and midwives, among others, are the people who devote their lives to caring for mothers and children; giving life-saving immunisations and health advice; looking after older people, and generally meeting people’s everyday essential health needs.

Dressed in their traditionally white superhero uniforms, they are often the fi rst and only point of healthcare in their communities.

The year 2020 has been desig-nated as the Year of the Nurse and Midwife, in honour of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, but the World Health Organisation has warned that glo-bally an additional nine million nur-ses and midwives are needed to achieve the commitment of providing all people with access to healthcare by 2030.

The North-West University’s School of Nursing has, over the past 52 years, committed itself to provide education and training of internatio-nal quality to undergraduate, post-basic and postgraduate students. Besides preventing, diagnosing and treating diseases, and providing expert care during childbirth, NWU-trained nurses and midwives also serve people caught up in humanita-rian emergencies and confl icts.

A career in the health sector is not an occupation, but rather a calling. Prof Siedine Coetzee, a passionate researcher at the NWU’s School

of Nursing, says the reason she became a nurse is deeply personal.

“My grandmother was unexpectedly dy-ing in South Africa (we were in Namibia), and a nurse made the decision to inform us that she was nearing her end, giving us the opportunity to say goodbye. She held the phone to my grandmother’s ear, and afterwards told us that my grandmother had responded to our messages and was more

Amid the current Covid-19 pandemic, Annel Rudolph, a professional nurse and alumna of the NWU’s School of Nursing, recently shared this touching and rather eye-opening message on social media:

“Tonight, for the very fi rst time in my entire nursing career, I’m lying in my bed and I’m scared! I’m afraid of what’s coming and of the unknown. I never thought that I would live in an era in which, like Florence, I have to light my candle and keep it high and shining, while half the population is hiding from a killer bug. War, I thought … yes. Maybe one day when I am old and my lamp is stored away, but a virus?

“The worst of all is that humanity is doing it to itself. The people don’t listen. Obviously not, because they don’t feel it. I, yes, I feel it. My family feels it. My husband and my one-year-old. I see it. I see the anguish in the eyes of my colleagues and in people who can’t hide. The people don’t understand how they are making this war harder to win. So tonight, I hope that the person reading this also starts to feel it and then listens.

“Listen if they tell you to stay at home. Do not go out unless it is an emergency. Don’t disregard the rules. They are there for a good reason. Twenty-one days are a long time, but imagine how it would feel if we don’t win this war. Think how long it will be for us out there who cannot hide. The only way to win this is by using our heads and listening.

“May God bless every one of you and also be with my colleagues and essential workers in the time ahead. Make Aunt Florence proud. I put all my trust and hope in God’s hands and have put on my full armour of God.”

Staff at Wilmed Park Oncology hard at work; Charmaine Rider, Nadine Viljoen, Lize Blom and Karin Verhoeven.

Not all superheroes wear capespeaceful. That evening she passed away.

“Based on that experience, I decided to become a nurse, because nurses not only care for the sick and dying, or for the physical needs of patients, they are a pivotal resource in any crisis experienced by the patient, which extends to the family and community. Often we share in our patients’ deepest and darkest vulne-

rabilities, which gives nurses the opportunity to, at the very least, im-prove clinical outcomes, but most often, change lives,” Prof Coetzee says.

Prof Welma Lubbe, an associate professor at the NWU, renowned for her research and work in midwifery and pre-mature births, says she got into nursing while waiting to be accepted for another healthcare profession.

“And then, I just fell in love with mid-wifery and realised that nurses do most of the activities that other professionals also do, but are the only ones who are next to the patient’s bed at night and over weekends. Nursing grew on me, and today I am a passionate midwife

and nurse with a deep love for premature babies and their families.

“I developed a passion for premature babies and their parents when I once stood next to an incubator in NICU and realised that we as hospital staff often need to take

over the parenting role in order to guide pa-rents towards proper care for their little one. This transformed my career into a passion for parents and their newborn or premature babies,” Prof Lubbe concludes.

There is global concern about the quality of nursing and midwifery care, and about the work environment of nurses. The focus of the NWU’s School of Nursing is ultimately aimed at improving the quality of nursing and midwifery, community engagement, in-novation and leadership.

In the year 1870 Florence Nightingale said it will take 150 years for the world to see the kind of nursing she envisions. Ironi-

cally perhaps, 1870 + 150 years brings us to the year 2020!

volgende drie weke ’n korona-kompetisie hou. Of, ons eet pandemiepasta.

Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - The Department of Transport kick-started a drive of activities to dis-tribute Personal Protective Equipment (hand gloves, masks and disinfects) to all taxi ranks across the province.

Speaking at the handing over of material at the Klerksdorp taxi rank, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development MEC, Desbo Mohono en-couraged communities to go for voluntary testing and screening for COVID-19.

She outlined the importance of lockdown regula-tions, testing and screening.

She said the taxi industry plays a significant role in the economy of the more especially in the rural areas of the Country.

The Head of Department, Botlhale Mofokeng said COVID-19 has proven to be a nemesis that respect no gender, no colour, no religion nor social stratum. She said disinfectants, sanitizers and washing hands

should become a new norm.“COVID-19 is teaching us new culture which we

have forgotten - basic hygiene. Let’s continue to comply and stay at home. Go out only when it’s completely necessary,” said Mofokeng, who further requested operators to use disinfectants and saniti-zers with respect.

“These are not for taxi drivers or their families. They are meant to contain the spread of the virus while you transport our essential services workers on daily basis.”

She continued to plead with taxi operators to strictly observe operational times as announced by the Minister of Transport.

According to reviewed lockdown regulations on public transport, operators are strictly allowed to operate from 05:00 to 10:00 and 16:00 to 21:00. Furthermore, they should only load 70% of the vehicle capacity, a regulation which also applies to private

vehicles of those who are allowed to travel with permits.

The operators are also requested to disinfect their taxis every after load be-fore getting other commu-ters, while further reques-ted to provide sanitizers to their commuters.

In total, the Department handed over more than 428 boxes of gloves com-prising of 100 each, 8140 masks and concentrated disinfectant chemicals comprising 20 litres which will be over 300 000 litres when diluted.

Klerksdorp Record, Klerks-dorp - Don’t just dream it, do it.

Local foodie Inge Wilken has taken up the task to share easy to make recipes on Facebook, with step-by-step video to make the lives of all the “stay at homers’’ a bit easier.

She came upon the idea of her Wilken Kitchen Rules video tutorials after her friends encou-raged her to teach them some of her cooking skills as “she makes cooking looks so easy’’.

Her first video aired on day 1 of the lockdown when she prepared Focaccia, a rosemary garlic bread you can enjoy with pasta, soup or even as a pizza base. Needless to say it was a hit. Then followed a selection of delicious recipes making the lockdown period just a bit more bearable because Wilken Kitchen Rules has dinner sorted.

Inge is quite modest about the following she has garnered. “I wake up every morning to whatsapps and Facebook posts of friends who have tried and at-tempted my meals. It makes me so happy,’’ she says.

She says the meals are easy to follow and ideal for the be-ginner cook. “I do not consider myself a master chef at all, if it is easy and quick, I make it. So all of my recipes are beginner friendly or passed down from generations.” Like her offering for day 8, Freaky Friday Flap-jacks, her mom’s famous recipe. She looks up to her mom, Lany Olivier, for inspiration as well as some of her chef friends. The Naked Chef, Jamie Oliver, is also a favourite.

She doesn’t really plan ahead, and share meals she and hubby Ryan will be eating for lunch

or dinner that day. The couple celebrated their second wedding anniversary on 1 April (day 6) they had Risotto with Smoked chicken and Basil pesto on the menu. “I love spoiling my hus-band with treats and good meals. It is always so rewarding at the end of the day.”

Ryan also contributes to the cooking videos by choosing the soundtrack for each video. She laughs.

“If you listen carefully in the beginning of each video, you can hear the tune of the day.”

Inge says with essentials like eggs, yeast and flour in the pan-try you can get far. She stocked up on meat, vegetables and enough basic groceries for the first week of lockdown.

This go-getter is not only busy in the kitchen during lockdown but as a dance coach and a bud-ding photographer she keeps busy by filming dance class tuto-rials to send to students.

The couple started their own vegetable garden that keep them busy as well as building puzzles, listening to music and doing a bit of cleaning and sorting out cupboards.

Her favourite dish to make is Nachos (day 11) and “an ama-zing chicken pot pie’’. Recipe coming soon. So far, the chicken curry as a meal, and fafel tarts were a big hit on her recipe vlog.

Inge’s advice to people strug-gling to adapt to the lockdown period is to embrace the time to learn a new skill.

“Cooking doesn’t have to be boring or a tiresome task. Invest in kitchen machines that help the process along. A pressure cooker is number 1 - they can do eve-rything now-a-days - even slow cook and make yoghurt.”

And remember to have fun.

Klerksdorp Record, Orkney - North West Premier, Prof Job Mokgoro, rolled out the mass screen, testing and tracing pro-gramme in the Dr KK District Municipality in Orkney this week.

The programme was kick-started on Monday 6 April 2020 in Motswedi village in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District.

So far, over 8000 people across the province have been voluntarily screened since then.

North West province received five mobile testing units.

Each district received one mobile unit and the remaining one will support the Premier and Health MEC Madoda Sambatha’s outreach program on COVID-19.

Mobile testing units are able to produce test results within 45 minutes.

Locally, mobile screening start-ed on 7-9 April in Alabama, Park Street Clinic and Manzilpark.

Councillors will communicate in their wards on dates for screen-ing that will continue until Tues-day 21 April.

Belangstellendes kan hom skakel by 074 4142455.
