Advice Hello readers, we are always so glad to get advice submissions, so make sure to keep writing your questions down and turning them in at the advice box in the office. Thanks for reading!  Dear Advice,

Life is confusing.  -Anonymous  Dear anonymous,

I know, right? Life is so confusing sometimes, but keep going and try to have some fun along the way! You do not have to understand everything all at once, you will figure it out along the way. If we knew everything about our life in advance, what would be the point?  Good luck, Zoe J. _______________________________________________________________________    Dear Advice,

People say I’m crazy because I believe humans can fly. I know it’s been scientifically proven impossible, but there is this part of me that believe that we can. I don’t know what to do. Do I drop my dream behind and no longer be known as crazy, or should I follow my dream and keep trying to find a way to fly.   -Anonymouse (They drew a very cute mouse but we can not draw so sorry.)  Dear Anonymouse,

Don’t give up on your dreams! Bumblebees shouldn’t be able to fly according to the laws of physics, but they do anyway! Besides, what are airplanes for? All these haters have probably flown in one, so they can fly. Find a way for us to do besides airplanes! I won’t tell you any cheesy puns, don’t worry I won’t punish you. Remember, “People

who are crazy enough to believe they can change the world, are the ones who do.” -Rob Siltanen  -Zoe O. _______________________________________________________________________  Dear Advice,

I have a problem with improper grammaring, are there any tips you can tell me to help me stop improperly do grammar?   -Anonymous  Dear Anonymous,

From your request for help, we can tell. Your spelling is pretty good, but you need to work on getting your words in order. Here are a few examples; “improperly do grammar” should be “improperly doing grammar.” “Grammaring” should be “grammar.” Try to work on what we told you, and soon you’ll get a lot better at grammar. Write to us again soon so we can see your progress! You can do it!  -Zoe O. and Zoe J. _____________________________________________________________________

Featured Stories A Dialogue for Two Toys- By Kaitlyn Ketchell  Lamby (the stuffed lamb toy): Oh, how I love being played with! Alexander (the jack-in-the-box): Speak for yourself. I’d much rather sit on a shelf all day than be played with. Have you seen how Amy plays with me? Down (Alexander snaps into his box)! Up (he pops out of his box)! Down! Up! Down! Up! I’m sick of it! Lamby: Oh, I’m sure it’s not that bad.  Alexander: No, I am literally sick of it. I threw up after the last time she played with me.  Lamby: Ew. That’s gross. Alexander: It’s true! Lamby: Well, maybe you don’t like being played with, but I sure do. Do you know how lovely it is to be hugged and snuggled? Alexander: Er- no. I’m not exactly the kind of toy that’s ideal for hugging and snuggling.  Lamby: Oh, you poor, poor, thing! I can’t imagine never being hugged! (Lamby thinks for a bit, and has an idea) Oh! Of course! (She begins moving closer to Alexander to hug him) Alexander: What are you doing!? Lamby: I was just trying to hug you! You’ve never been hugged before, and everyone needs to be hugged at least once in their life! Also, everyone loves hugs! Alexander: Well, I don’t. So don’t hug me. Lamby: Okay. Alexander: You know, I’m glad I’m me and not you. Lamby: Why? Alexander: For starters, I don’t get hugged all the time. Also, everyone loves a Jack-In-The-Box. Lamby: Are you saying that you’re better than me? Alexander: Yes, I am. Lamby: Well, at least Amy plays nicely with me! Alexander: At least I have an original name. Lamby: At least I’m named after what I am! Alexander: Psh. Lamby is a dumb and unoriginal name.  Lamby: Well, Alexander is a stupid name! Nobody wants an Alexander-in-the-box! Alexander: Amy did. Lamby: Yeah. She did. Maybe she doesn’t want you anymore.  Alexander: I’m sure she still loves me.

Lamby: If she loves you, why doesn’t she hug you? I think you’re unloved. Alexander: Shush! Amy’s coming up the steps! Lamby: There’s Amy. Alexander: Shh! Lamby: She’s going to pick me up and hug me! Alexander: No, wait! She’s picking me up! Lamby: And she’s hugging you!? Argh! This is so unfair! Alexander: Now who’s unloved? ~end~

Horoscopes Aries: Write everything important down- it may help you in an upcoming situation...

Taurus: Keep your friends close… and your enemies closer. Then, deal with any issues that you come across.

Gemini: Don’t be afraid to break out in song at any random moment.

Cancer: LOOK BEHIND YOU! It’s unexpected and sure to cause a surprise.

Leo: You’ll find that you lost something, only to realize it is right where you left it, wherever that may be…

Virgo: Time is on your side this month. Keep a watch around your wrist!

Libra: Accept help when it comes.

Scorpio: Love may not be around the corner- it is already behind you!

Sagittarius: Jazzercise is an amazing sport. It may save your life this month...

Capricorn: You will soon find a new hobby, although you might fall a little too in love with it… Just remember where your heart lies.

Aquarius: Your zodiac sign is lying to you this month. Don’t listen to it!

Pisces: Be sure to examine your food carefully before you eat it. It may be too good to be true. Interviews This issue, we interviewed Ms. Wilder, the teacher leading students participating in National History Day.  Kaitlyn Ketchell: How would you describe National History Day to people who have never heard of it?  Ms. Wilder: Well, usually I tell students it’s kind of like the science fair, because most kids have heard of the science fair. And it’s not something that you would get in your classroom; it’s anything

Page 13: R e d , W h i t e , & B l ue N e w s€¦ · R e d , W h i t e , & B l ue N e w s ... dream behind and no longer be known as crazy, or should I follow my dream and keep trying to

that impacts the world. I give examples of scientific discoveries that affected the world in history. You don’t have to think of it as some historical event, it could be all kinds of things that impact history. It’s a contest, and it’s really intense, so if there’s something that you would really like to study in social studies but can’t because it’s not in the textbook, NHD is good.  Kaitlyn: You mentioned that it is a contest, so has anyone from LPMS won before?  Ms. Wilder: Yes, there are three levels, sort of like science fair. You start out at a lower level and can go higher. It starts at Regionals, depending on the area. For us it’s pretty much El Paso County Schools. And because of all the categories, like exhibit, website, and so forth, you can place first, second and third in lots of categories. There’s a chance to have twenty-seven winners. In the past ten years, we have had at least four per year, but most of the time probably half or most of the winners are from LPMS. The next level, the winners go to state, and placing at state is a little harder so we’ve had, I think, four people win at state. Nobody’s won at the Nationals, though. They’ve gone, but never won.   Kaitlyn: About how many students participate each year?  Ms. Wilder: It varies, usually around forty to fifty. Sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less.   Kaitlyn: Do you know roughly how many years you’ve been doing National History Day?  Ms. Wilder: Yeah, I started at Creekside, so I’d say this is at least the twelfth year, at least.  Kaitlyn: National History Day seems like a really cool and unique experience. What do you think makes it so unique?  Ms. Wilder: What I think makes it so unique is the fact that the selection of topics is incredibly vast. I’ve had kids, for example, go to state with The History of Jazz. Last year there was some dancing and scientific inventions. Kids like lots of different things, so if there’s something you This issue, we interviewed Ms. Wilder, the teacher leading LPMS students competing in National History Day. If there’s something really want to know, and you can figure out a way

Page 14: R e d , W h i t e , & B l ue N e w s€¦ · R e d , W h i t e , & B l ue N e w s ... dream behind and no longer be known as crazy, or should I follow my dream and keep trying to

that it impacted history, and it fits in with the annual theme, I find there’s a lot of enthusiasm. If it’s something you’re interested in, I find kids are more interested. So I think that’s what makes it really unique: they can pick their own topic and they can make it related to something they’re interested in. I love to see the way that students improve their research skills, because it’s so important, and I know it’s so hard.

News

New Start Times? By Tristen Clark

The school board for District 38 has debated whether they should change the start times for all three levels of school. At the moment, elementary school starts at 8:45, middle school at 7:23, and high school at 7:40.

The new start times, should they be put into place, would have elementary School starting at 7:30, middle school at 8:55, and high school at 8:45.

Responses to this were mixed. Elementary school parents are 53% against the change, and 47% for.

Middle and high school parents, on the other hand, are 40% against the change, and 60% for.

If the start times were changed with this plan, the changes would not occur for multiple years. At the moment, the debate has not become a major issue, and the idea will probably not be pursued.
