A story about why end marks go inside of punctuation…

• It’s all about Gutenberg… So… • Who is Gutenberg? When the printing press was first invented in Europe (notice I said

in Europe… it came in China wayyyy sooner). When printing, lots of little letters are hand carved and then placed on a big plate to form words. Each piece is the size of a letter in a book. Small.

Then, after all the letters are in place, they would apply pressure to the sides to keep all the pieces in place. When the periods came at the end of a line, the pieces were so small they would often break under the pressure. To keep them from breaking as often, whenever they were used with quotation marks they would be put inside the quotes so that the quotation mark piece, which was bigger, would take more of the pressure and not break.
