Quissett Yacht Club JUNIOR SAILING PROGRAM Quissett Harbor in Falmouth, MA Head Adventure Sailing Program Instructor for Summer 2017 Job Description The Quissett Yacht Club (QYC) Junior Sailing Program is accepting applications for an experienced instructor to lead our Adventure Sailing Program. QYC is located in Quissett Harbor on the Eastern side of Buzzards Bay, convenient to sailing around the Cape and Islands, Southern MA and the Newport area. The term of the employment will be 8 weeks of instruction, from June 26 – August 18 and approximately a week of additional days of program setup and fleet breakdown. The primary responsibility of the job is working, under the direction of the QYC Sailing Program Director, to teach the Adventure Sailing Program’s two classes, including: • Developing, planning and instructing the Adventure Sailing Program classes • Coordinating relevant sailing experiences and field trips, including transportation if needed The Adventure Sailing Program includes two classes. • Adventure I is intended for beginning sailors who are too large or too old to sail Optimist prams. The class teaches the fundamentals of sailing including on-the water safety, seamanship, rigging, steering, crewing, and docking, as well as terminology, knot tying, basic weather awareness and navigation. The focus is on skill-building and fun. Bullseyes are primarily used for instruction, though other boats may be used as well. There is a broad range of student ages in this class, typically between 11-16 years. Classes run Monday – Friday from 10:15 am – 12:15 pm. This class runs for two four-week sessions. • Adventure II is designed for experienced sailors who have mastered the skills taught in QYC’s introductory sailing classes and who prefer recreational sailing over racing. This class is designed to be fun and maximize time on the water. Sailors learn fundamental skills including mooring, anchoring, flying a spinnaker, analyzing and reacting appropriately to weather signs and patterns, navigation and chart reading. The class will include extended sails to local harbors in Buzzards Bay and the surrounding waters. The class is taught primarily in Bullseyes, but may include other club boats as well. The age of students in this class is typically 13-17. Classes run Monday – Friday from 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm. Sailors may enroll in this class for a week at a time. Job Requirements Sailing instruction, cruising experience and US Sailing Small Boat Sailing Instructor Level 1 Certification are required. Pass a background check. CPR and First Aid instruction toward CPR certification will be provided by QYC. The ideal candidate is: • Passionate about sailing, teaching and working with older junior sailors
