Our fundraising efforts and our membership numbers reflect the enthusiasm our communities have for this very special place and new resource for our community. We are so grateful for your continued interest and ideas. Here are a couple ways you can help: • The Museum is developing an events calendar. If your organization would like them included, please let us know (leave message at Museum 360 765-4848). • Volunteer for work parties. There are ample “to do” lists for both inside the buildings and the grounds. (360 765-4848). I want to talk for a moment about a serious issue that we must solve as the Museum has grown and Worthington Park is becoming a reality. In a word, it is water. The existing well was drilled over 20 years ago and will not continue to support future Museum needs and the addition of the Worthington Park buildings. We have begun discussions with P.U.D., Jefferson County Fire District 2, and Port officials about what system would work for accessing the public water. We need to find a viable solution and will keep you posted on our progress. People have inquired about how to be able to use the Park. As you know, we do not yet own the property. Please remember that the park is private and will remain private when it owned by the Museum. Be assured that there will be functions where the general public will be invited and individuals can rent facilities and grounds for private functions. This is a large and complex issue. We will take the time to get it right! The Linger Longer Outdoor Theater is a stunning example which shows the volunteerism that is a hallmark of Quilcene community support. The Board approved theater concept and a new group was conceived - The Linger Longer Productions began its work. (See related stories on page 2 and 4.) The end result - a $180,000.00 outdoor theater as a gift to our Museum and to our community. Please show your support for this awesome venue - when the 2013 season is announced, bring your family, friends and neighbors to the performances. The Museum closes for the fall and winter seasons. But activities are still in high gear for the Board. We must be successful in our fund-raising efforts so that “The 10 Acres of Possibilities” become a reality for Worthington Park. Campaign for Worthington Park – Quilcene

This summer has brought exciting changes, activities, and progress at Worthington Park and the Museum’s capital campaign to buy the property, buildings and natural riverfront. Well over two hundred interested people toured the mansion, many others wanted to watch the salmon spawn ‘close up and personal’ on the Little Quilcene River, and throughout the newsletter you will read of new special events and our annual activities. Our fundraising efforts and our membership numbers reflect the enthusiasm our communities have for this very special place and new resource for our community.

We are so grateful for your continued interest and ideas. Here are a couple ways you can help:

• The Museum is developing an events calendar.

Linger Longer Outdoor Theater – a New Venue for the “Pearl of the Peninsula”

Salute to Campaign Business Volunteers

2012 witnessed the arrival of an amazing new event venue in Quilcene: The Linger Longer Outdoor Theater. Designed by Brinnon architect Gene Thompson and constructed entirely with volunteer labor, the stage features two wonderful totem poles carved of huge local cedars by Quilcene-born carver Robert Canterbury.

A prominent character on the totems is the beaver, fitting due to the stages’ pond-side setting and local Native American history. The beaver has become a mascot for the theater, with a design contributed by Quilcene artist Anne Ricker.

The stage idea began with Quilcene resident, Bob Rosen, who had for years imagined developing a multi-use family event venue right in town, a place that could host many memorable occasions and stimulate our local economy. He met with the Museum Board to discuss the Worthington Park local and came away knowing it was the right place.

Phenonemal support through donations to purchase needed materials poured in – over $23,000 and the incredible volunteer effort to build the structure highlights the community’s generous nature – an estimated low number of 1,500 hours of donated professional and business hours were donated.

The Linger Longer Outdoor Theater was dedication on July 7, 2012 with a gala community celebration. The very first concert was July 21 and featured country-music star Chance McKinney, with singer-songwriter Kellee Bradley opening. The second event was September 1and featured northwest talent Cloverdayle and Hannah Weeks.

While the primary thrust of the stage is to host events benefitting the Museum on an ongoing basis, the venue is perfect for weddings, reunions and community events of all variety. For more information and photographs, please visit www.lingerlongerproductions.com

And the work goes on…

In October, once again the volunteers were out in the Park fields. Between Glen Huntington, Chimacum; Doug Reeves and Gary Phillips from Quilcene, the field was tilled, leveled/dragged/ and compacted. Watch for a new level green field next year. (It is closed for the season. Please do not enter as the ground is freshly seeded.)

We are grateful for the support of local businessmen and women who give professional services, time and advice, and wonderful in-kind services.

Quilcene resident, Erwin Dence, professional painter, designer, and yes – a screen play writer, has designed and created outdoor signage on the ‘triangle piece’ of land adjacent to the Museum and a campaign announcement board on the grounds. Erwin designs giant special event cards for the Museum such as the Museum 20th birthday party and the LLP dedication card.

Highway Specialties owners, Cathy and Rich Holtman, helped out with reusable banners for the WP “float” and marchers in the Quilcene Parade this past September. This business is located in Port Hadlock.

Professional arborist and landscape designer/installer Richard Hefley, “Gardens by Design” on Marrowstone Island advises the Steering Committee regarding the tree collection at the mansion.

SOS Printing owner, Dan Huntingford, provides generous in-kind support with the many printed projects of both the campaign and the Museum. SOS is located in Port Townsend.

And, giving great advice on saving mailing costs and donating her time in our many mailings, we thank very much Caroline M. Stuckey, Olympic Mailing Services, Sequim.

It’s that time of the year again – the Museum membership drive

You, our Museum members provide the “lifeblood” for our operations. That plasma is in the form of your yearly membership dues. This drive begins in the fall of every year and the dues are a bargain.

We have not raised membership dues since the Museum opened in 1991. One Board member (who has a mathematic bent) looked up the consumer price index. For the years 1991 through 2012, it shows an increase of 71 percent over this time. That means the $10 level would be $17, the $15 - $25.50; the $25 - $43, the $50 - $85, the $150 - $256 and $200 - $341.

The same goes for the cost of Museum operations – we have seen major price jumps fuel, electricity, supplies, etc. We are doing our best to live with these budget limitations and at least for the 2013 year, all dues will remain the same.

Here’s an answer to a frequently asked question. “If I became a lifetime member previously, do I need to join again? The answer is no, once you become a lifetime member that remains in place forever.

Please join the Museum. Keep this community resource “alive and healthy” with your membership. You’ll note there is a new category in which you can support the Museum. An optional donation, marked “ sustaining contribution” helps us in our budgeting process.

Mail 2013 membership form and check (made payable to the Quilcene Historical Museum) to the Museum mailing address: P. O. Box 574 Quilcene WA 98376.

It’s a Living and Working Museum

The Museum is proud to sponsor special events and activities that bring people together at the beautiful venue of Worthington Park and the Museum grounds. This past season it included:

Salute to Lifetime Members

On March 24 the Board hosted an afternoon reception to honor Lifetime Members of the Museum. Due to the generosity of the attendees, $7,000 was raised in one evening.

Fifth Annual Alumni Weekend LuncheonJune 23 proved to be another fun opportunity for Quilcene High School Alumni to gather at the Museum for an informal lunch, to renew friendships, trade stories, and wander through the exhibits.

Linger Longer Outdoor Theater Dedicated July 7

The newly constructed stage was decorated in red, white and blue bunting and flags. With the stage crew volunteers and over 125 people from the community, the facility was dedicated to "The Quilcene Native Americans, The pioneers and adventurers of the Peninsula, the past and present citizens of Quilcene, and the future generations of all people" in the area.

A French Country Picnic in the Park

August 9, 2012 normally would have been the date for a Ninth Night at QCC; however, this time it was shifted for a special evening for QHM to entertain at the Linger Longer Stage. The invitation encouraged everyone to bring a “country” potluck and QHM provided the refreshments and gave tours of the Worthington mansion.

Wine and Beer Tasting Evening

Using the new Outdoor Theater setting for it setting, the Fourth annual wine and beer tasting was August 18. The wine tasting experience was provided by Joe Euro, owner of Wine Seller in Port Townsend. Kim Sands from Port Townsend Brewery presented the beer tasting and guests sampled cheeses from Port Townsend Creamery and bread from Pane D’Amore. Chamber music selections were provided by the Jue Pu Duo from Bainbridge Island.

Museum Hosts Mason County Historical Society

On August 19th the Quilcene Museum hosted nineteen members of the Mason County Historical Museum who held their annual potluck picnic on the Museum grounds, with the Quilcene Museum providing coffee, cake and cookies. As Jacque Booth’s sister-in-law is a volunteer at their Museum she came to visit her, and also gave them a tour of the Worthington Mansion.

Estate/Garage Sale at Worthington Park

So many items were donated from two estates and people who wanted to support the fund-raising campaign, the sale, scheduled for one day only (September 15) continued on Sunday. People were lined up ½ hour before it started and were rewarded with sale tables piled high with a huge assortment of goods of interest to the sales goers. The event took in $1,403 to support the campaign.

Quilcene Historical Museum Research Department

The research department has been fairly quiet this year, but still we were able to provide an article and picture to a family with brand new information. Also, a gratifying letter came from a woman from Illinois who thanked me for writing my book, “Quilcene’s Heritage”. Her dad had been in the CCC Camp here in the 1930’s, (she later found out her uncle had been here at the same time), and she bought the book just because of the chapter on the CCC Camp. They came to visit Quilcene just so she could get a “feel of what Quilcene was like”.

With thanks to the Jefferson County Historical Society and the Genealogical Society, we now have over a 100 ledgers of bound Port Townsend Leaders, 6 to 12 months worth in each and are quite big and heavy and now stored in the attic. If you have a time period, and the time to come to do research, they are quite valuable in finding “tidbits” on families. A reservation is required, as we need to know in advance those "years you need" and we'll have them out for you.

Passages

The Board acknowledges with sadness the loss of Museum friends and supporters – Vern Bailey, Dodee Brown, Robert Jackson, Alice Kawahara, Wanda (Leavitt) Olin, Bud Taylor, Mary Beth Yntema, and Eilleen Worthington. We miss your wonderful help, kind words, and a ready smile. Peace to you. We will not forget you.

Larry McKeehan, founding and charter member of the Board, remembers Eilleen in this special tribute.

In Memory – tribute to Eilleen Worthington “I count this thing to be grandly true: That a noble deed is a step towards God, Lifting the soul from the common clod to a purer air and a broader view.” (Gradatim) Fitting words for Eilleen Worthington …. Someone who definitely did noble deeds … deeds that are general knowledge (school library, school greenhouse, county library) but also deeds that are barely known (school supplies and field trips for individual kids who needed a little financial assistance, buying Book Fair books for classrooms, planting of trees to raise funds for elementary science studies). And the list goes on and on. And she could recite most of this poem from memory even at 92 years old!

She loved to “converse” about birds, politics, plants, the school, weather, Mars and modern technology. Also the School Horticulture and Garden Program, greenhouse, composting, worm bins, students and projects. And then maybe continue with the good old days, the days to come, food, travel, family, writing and poetry as major topics. And she loved crossword puzzles, ornithology, flowers, education and just about any social or scientific issue of the day.

Poetry was one of Eilleen Worthington’s favorite passions. She read, wrote and recited. A word, an idea or thought could set her off onto a path of recitation of one of her favorite poems, songs, psalms or nursery rhyme verses. A stumble here, a forgotten word there … but forward she would go … maybe to stop short of the end, but most likely to continue all the way to the end. Or sometimes she would pause and have to say: “Honey, see that thick blue book right there on the shelf. Look in there for the missing word.” Even more special are Eilleen’s original poems.

Eilleen was a free thinking, classy, liberal, well-read, nice person! She loved the idea of financial help she gave to the school greenhouse and garden program, helping to raise student test scores in science. She realized and understood that there are new thoughts and technology needed for today and the future; make learning relevant to the real world with hands-on experiences and the possibilities for a successful future is unlimited. Thank you Eilleen from all of your friends in the Quilcene Schools, Museum, Community and beyond. We truly respected and loved your support these many years. Peace and love to you & your family.

Message of support to Noel

The Museum is very grateful to Eilleen Worthington’s son Noel Criscuola for the confidence and trust he has given us these past 5 months. He has allowed us access to the Worthington Mansion and property to begin the preservation, cleaning and landscape worked needed to showcase this marvelous project. We have welcomed his approval and suggestions with donations, arrangements, visitors, special events and tours that we have had. Thank You Noel for your help and understanding.

Docent Volunteers

New to the Museum Collections

A big thank you to the 29 docent volunteers who greeted visitors during the 360 hours the Museum was open this year. Thanks are due to those who opened the doors outside the regular hours for special tours, book purchasing, research, or community events. The top “sitters” were Larry, Bonnie, Nancy, Winona, Mary Ann, and Bob McDaniel. Thanks to the rest of the crew – Cleone, Georgena, Dave & Margot, Carol and Jim, Mari and Gary, Lorna, Riann Maki, Ellen, Christina, Marti & Wayne, Jacque B., Claire, Jan, David Bonnie McD., Gloria, Jackie B., and Becky Gibson. The Museum is open because of you.

During 2012 we received 135 artifacts, photos or documents from 40 different people from 3 states and 14 Washing cities. In addition we received many items from Worthington/Legg family members (Eilleen Worthington, Ellen Jenner, James Worthington, Stephen Worthington and Eleanor Legg Worsham) or others who wished to contribute to the re-furnishing of the Worthington mansion (Noel Crisuola Davis Steelquiet (Earl Miller Estate), Sue Borges, and the Anderson estate. We appreciate and treasure each item entrusted to our care and preservation.
