Summary of the main activities:
African Studies
Dr. Vilhanová continued with her activities and work on the international project
Fontes Historiae Africanae (FHA) focused on the study and critical edition of the
historical records related to the African history, mainly the history of Sub-Saharian
Africa. This international project under the auspices of Union Académique
Internationale (UAI) has been working under the guidance of Dr. Vilhanová as the
principal co-ordinator of the project since 1996. The countries of the European Union,
Africa and individual scholars from other countries take part in this project. In the last
four years Dr. Vilhanová participated in several scientific conferences, meetings,
symposiums, workshops related to the scientific, organisational and technical
aspects of the FHA project. The scientific edition of records related to the stay of
Móric Beňovský in Madagaskar should be the Slovak contribution to the FHA project.
Initiative and vigorous was her taking part in the work of the Presidium of the UAI
during the symposia in Paris in 2003, 2004 and 2005, as well as during the general
assembly in Lisabon in June 2003. At the anniversary general assembly of the UAI in
Brusel (May 30 – June 4, 2006), the FHA project was one of the fifteen ones
evaluated for the four years period. The FHA project was characterized by an
anonymous assessment report as one of the most prestigious projects of the UAI.
The report highly appreciated the progress concerning the publishing activities and
the international co-operation. Thanks to more active and numerous participation of
African historians in the FHA project, the workshops of the national committees and
5
international colloquiums held in Ghana (2002) and Senegal (2004) led to an
enlargement of the international dimension. Another colloquium will be held in Niger
in January 30 – February 3, 2007. Its subject will be Les manuscrits arabes et ajamis
comme sources historiques en Afrique. Along with her activities related to the FHA
project, Dr. Vilhanová has been dealing with the problems of relations between Africa
and Europe from the historical point of view. She concentrated her attention upon the
question of colonialism, Christian missions in specific African regions, and actual
problems of ethnic conflicts between some African nations. She has published the
results of her studies in the AAS journal and proceedings from the conferences held
in Slovakia and abroad. She wrote the entries in the national encyclopaedia Beliana.
She lectured at the universities in Bratislava and Trnava.
Arabic Studies
Two Slovak Arabists carried out separately the research in history and linguistics.
Historical research carried out by Dr. Sorby brought seminal results in the form of
some considerable publications, one of which was published in the Great Britain, as
well as several other studies published in the journals. Sorby put his emphasize on
the specific problems of historical evolution of Egypt in the 19 th century, and Arabic
countries of the Near East in the 20 th century. Altogether, Dr. Sorby has published in
the period of assessment 2003–2006 four monographs. In addition to this, he
published two textbooks of Arabic. The latter are important not only for the students
at the universities but also for the Slovak public. He published his partial studies in
the AAS journal and in Historický časopis as well as in other publications. He actively
co-operated and lectured at the universities in Nitra and Banská Bystrica. He
officiated as external adviser of Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Slovak Republic,
and the expert for the activities of the Slovak Armed Forces in the Arabic countries. In
the period of assessment, Dr. Sorby achieved academic and pedagogic degrees,

3. Concept of R&D activity of the Organisation for the next four years (max. 5 pages)
i. Present state of knowledge and status of ongoing research related to the subject of the Concept, from both international and national perspective
IOS is a multidisciplinary institute with the basic research in several disciplines
of the Oriental studies (see above). Since the IOS is the unique institute of its
kind in the Slovak Republic from the point of view of its fundamental mission
(basic research, PhD. study), structure (ten Oriental disciplines), number of
employees (total number 19, researchers 15), scientific positions (prof., doc.,
Mgr., PhD./CSc., DrSc.), historical tradition (since 1960), achieved partnerships,
contacts, experiences, results, etc., it can be said that, the IOS is a natural
authority in the scientific and research structure in the Slovak Republic.
Importance, significance and authority of the IOS can be attested by:
- appreciation and prizes in Slovakia and abroad
- offers and calls for the co-operation from the Slovak and international
institutions
- publishing the results of the research in abroad
- interest of the state institutions and the public in the results of research,
expert opinions and knowledge related to the Orient
- interest of the Slovak universities in the co-operation in the pedagogical
process
From the point of view of human or social sciences, each of the ten mentioned
areas of Oriental studies represents a set of complex subjects of various kinds.
Naturally, the researchers of the IOS approach their specialization from their
point of view. Results of their research are based on the deep knowledge of the
problems and records. This approach is attested by a number of various
activities focused on and consists of researching, observing, gathering and
studying the relevant material and data. Co-operation with the international
institutions represents the natural component of the activities mentioned above.
The capability to acquire and use the latest knowledge, theories, methods of
research, etc., forms an important part of the modern Oriental research
including inter- and multidisciplinary approach. The research results of the IOS
are important not only for the Oriental studies or science as such, but they can
11
also be used in other social sciences, social praxis, and last but not least, they
favourably influence the process of self-education of the population and
enhance the level of the intelligence of the individuals and the public. In this
connection, one can mention the expert reports, reviews and other references
for the state institutions, the pedagogical process, the presentations in the radio,
televisions, popular activities of all kinds which represent valuable and important
instrument of improving educational process, and implementing and involving
the public into it.
ii. Organisation’s role or significance in the overall research effort within the field of the Concept on both the national and international scales
In the general sense, the Oriental studies are focused on the cultures of Africa
and Asia in different spaces and at different periods. The process of deepening
and extending our knowledge about the populations and countries of these parts
of the world always has had an important meaning for the so-called Western
civilization. On the basis of the global evolution of the civilization, it can be said
that the meaning of Oriental studies has a rising tendency. This can be said not
only from the perspective of cumulating the scientific data but also from the
evolutionary point of view. Africa and Asia as the cradles of the civilization,
writing (and the former also the origin of modern humans) represent a source of
rich cultural diversity, human power, mineral deposits, economic potential,
opportunities for the various kinds of co-operation on the one hand, however,
they are the source of a number of problems, conflicts, etc. on the other hand.
For our country situated in the middle of Europe understanding of this world and
the accumulated knowledge can have a strategic meaning from the perspective
of their effective and rational use. In the present world of dynamic development
of information technologies, human migration, cultural clashes of various kinds,
the Oriental studies play a very important role in the Slovak society. New goals
and tasks follow from the membership of Slovakia in the European Union and its
scientific and research space. Of course, the Oriental studies exceed the limits
of Europe by their research subject. In this connection, several goals and tasks
of the IOS can be mentioned: continuity in the scientific research, continuity in
12
the PhD. study, the deepening of the co-operation with the universities and
searching for the new areas of this co-operation, intensifying the co-operation
with the state institutions and the public sector.
iii. Objectives of the Concept
Along with the scientific research it will be important to continue in the process
of the PhD. study as a very effective instrument and a source of new scientific
researchers needed for the IOS. In this connection, it will be necessary to
respond to the relevant changes in legislation, since it creates the fundamental
framework and opportunities for other development of the education process. At
the same time it will be necessary to search for the new areas of co-operation
with the universities, where at the moment it is not possible to teach Oriental
studies in the third degree of higher education anywhere in Slovakia. IOS
disposes of human, scientific and material potential that can be used to help to
improve the situation at the Slovak universities in connection to build some new
oriental study programmes. Another task for the next period will be the
intensification of the relationship with the state institutions and the public sector.
The Slovak society is not ethnically homogeneous and Slovakia is not only a
transit country for the people coming from Asia an Africa but our country
becomes a new homeland for those people. Interactions and clashes with new
cultures might result potentionally into some sorts of problems and conflicts
following from misunderstanding, bias, etc. In order to precede such a kind of
situation, the IOS can help by its authority, scholars and knowledge to our
society and its institutions. Last but not least, it is important to mention the future
activities of various kind focused on the public, educational process in the
society and more effective and intensive support of this sort of activities
provided by the IOS.
iv. Proposed strategies and methods to be applied, and time schedule
13
The above-mentioned goals and plans can be achieved under present
conditions only applying the step-by-step method. In this connection, it will be
necessary to start discussion with authorities of the universities how to develop
Oriental studies at the universities. Further, it will be important to continue in the
PhD. study. This process represents a very effective instrument and natural
source of new scholars with fresh ideas and the new research programmes
applied in and utilizable by the IOS. Junior research fellows of the IOS should
continue with the process of achieving higher academic degrees in order to be
able to participate in the educational activities involving the PhD. study at the
IOS or providing this sort of services at the universities. As for the basic
research, realization of which would depend upon large financial support, it will
be necessary and useful to ask for such a support the scientific agencies and
foundations. Some international programmes and projects of the European
Union require significant financial contribution and support in case of
participation. One of the basic priorities of the IOS for the next period will
concern the AAS journal and its acceptance by the Thompson scientific and the
presentation of the AAS journal on the web of science database.
III. Partial indicators of the main activities:1. Research output

All the relevant information concerning the scientific outputs of the IOS can be
found on the website of the IOS www.orient.sav.sk. Comparing the number of the
scientific outputs from the actual period of assessment 2003–2006 on the one
hand and those achieved in the former assessment period on the other hand one
can see a quantitative rise of the outputs in all publication categories in the period
2003–2006.

iii. Supplementary information and/or comments on responses to the scientific output of the Organisation
Since the citation databases are based on the selective principle and do not contain
all the Oriental publications issued throughout the world, in principle, it is not possible
to registrate the real number of citations for the certain year. Majority of the citations
of the researchers of the IOS comes from in the international journals and books.
Citations from Slovakia form a minor part of the whole. This fact follows from the
small number of the Slovak Orientalists working as scientific researchers and at the
same time this situation is partly caused by the fact that in one Oriental discipline
often works only one scholar.

iii. Status and development of research infrastructure incl. experimental, computing and technical base (description of the present infrastructure, premises, and material and technical resources. Infrastructure, instrumentation and major technical equipment necessary for the achievement of the objectives specified in the research Concept)
The area of the IOS with 19 employees consisting of workrooms and stock for the
books is 108,8 square meters. The property of the IOS consists of 15 computers,
7 printers (some of them function as copy devices too), 1 digital camera with
equipment, 1 dataprojector with equipment. In the next period, it will be useful to
enlarge the number of notebooks which are important for the work in aboard.

iv. Status and development of bibliographic resources, activities of the Organisation’s library and/or information centre
In the period of assessement the lOS library acquired altogether 386 new books
(status quo of the library dated to 31/12/06: 12 886). The number of periodicals
arose from 24 in 2003 to 38 in 2006. The number of new books and periodicals
depends primarily on the financial ability of the IOS and partly on the exchange of
publications. The works continued with the mentioned exchange, and recherché
services. New data and information were acquired concerning the AAS journal
and its registration in the international databases.
v. Describe how the results and suggestions of the previous assessment were taken into account
One of the recommendations was related to the reducing the average age of the
research employees of the IOS. In this connection it can be said that two young
scientific researchers have joined the IOS. Further possibilities depend upon the
financial situation and the existence of the appropriate candidates. Another
recommendation was concerned the AAS journal and its management. The
changes in the editorial board were made. The list of the international databases
with the data related to the AAS journal was elaborated and continuously
updated. The IOS is in touch with the Thompson scientific and had applied for the
registration on the web of science. At present the AAS journal is in the monitoring
period. It should be said the the criteria of the TS are exclusively of technical
character. The decision of the TS to include (or not include) the AAS journal on
the web of science is expected in the period 2007–2008. The other
recommendation was related to the improving the technical facilities of the IOS. In
the period 2003–2006 the IOS updated majority of the PCs and other technical
equipment. In conclusion one can say that a majority, if not all recommendations,
of the previous assessment were fulfilled.

vi. Supplementary information and/or comments on management, research infrastructure, and trends in personnel development
In 2005 the IOS acquired some financial support from the Commission of the SAS
and decided to buy two notebooks, one digital camera and one dataprojector
(both with equipment). These instruments are necessary and very helpful in the
work, especially abroad. Since January 1, 2005, the name of the organisation has
been transformed and it exists under the new name – The Institute of Oriental
Studies of the Slovak Academy of Science.
