Presenting my planning

egoldie.blogspot.com

I created my own personal BlogSpot account so I could upload and present documents with

comments annotating on my work and how this helps me with my own soap.

I will also comment on my own work and explain why I have done this in depth.

Planning

To keep all my planning in order

clearly, I used blogspot.com and created my own

account, this enabled me to present all my planning and make

notes and deconstruct the specific planning notes, story boards,

and scripts I had produced.

Soaps, Forms and Conventions Q1.

Before we start to produce our own trailer for a Soap Opera it is important to understand how the codes and conventions are shown and how they work.

To understand how these forms and conventions are shown in a soap, we must deconstruct and evaluate an existing TV Soap Opera. These next few slides will show how I have taken apart an episode from an existing soap and use these conventions when producing my own soap opera.

Page 7: Question 1 Of My Evaluation

Q1.Evaluating an existing Soap Opera Costumes are quite cheap and tacky, and also very dated, this represents a setting of a middle/working class area

In door shot in the day time, lighting is quite restricted from the cluttered house.

Character’s both at home in the day time, may reflect the countries economic state as they may have previously lost their jobs.

Southern ‘Cockney’ accent is the regional identity of this soap in the east end

Feminine decorations placed around the house also floral pattern wallpaper very dated, reflects the characters personality and looks.

Q1.Evaluating an existing Soap Opera

This panning shot helps the audience understand the relationship of these two characters, it also shows the direction to where the next scene will take place

This medium close up shot of these two characters interacting it clearly states who is controlling the conversation at that exact camera shot.

This big close up tells the audience exactly how the narrative is feeling emotionally, it makes the audience feel that they are highly involved

Comparison

Big Close Up

Medium Close Up

Natural use of make up, sense of realism.

Natural light in every shot type, makes the soap look realistic.

We purposely shot in the day to get a good tone of natural light, even when filming inside we got the same brightness and tone of natural light

Panning Shot

Page 11: Question 1 Of My Evaluation

Comparison Q1.

Our set throughout is very neutral looking which makes the mise en scene stand out more than it would on a normal soap. You can see this by the shot below from Hollyoaks.

We used the same shot type as the clip on the right. You can see the difference between my soap and Hollyoaks. Hill Top Farm is ‘classier’ than Hollyoaks from the colours and clarity of the camera filter.

Page 12: Question 1 Of My Evaluation

Evaluating an existing Soap Opera Q1.

A common theme in our soap was to create tension by ending dramatic clips in slow motion, we did this to emphasise what is going on, to make sure the audience get a better understanding

of what is happening.

Creating Mise En Scene

Sambuca – Throughout she is wearing dark red, this indicates she is a promiscuous character. She also makes her self up heavily with bright red lipstick and dark black make up on her eyes, almost as if she is hiding herself.

In our trailer for Hill Top Farm we created various themes to match the characters personality, and their role in the soap. These include the following:-

Messy lipstick on their faces = messy

relationship

Important shot- two arrows indicating different directions, bigger arrow pointing

in Bella’s direction ( she is the biggest part of his life)where as Sambuca’s is

small.

High angle shot to represent that Bella is dominant because she

knows their secret.

Q1.

Page 14: Question 1 Of My Evaluation

Creating Mise En Scene

Bella – In the soap Bella is always wearing neutral coloured clothing, supported by her natural hair style & make up. This makes the audience know she is the innocent character in this soap, and Bella’s appearance completely contrasts to Sambuca’s cheap appearance.

Sleeping turned away from each other reflecting

their relationship

Linking arms, not stereotypical body contact in a relationship – parting away

Holding a folder containing work,

shows she is doing well for herself, contrasting to

Sambuca

Archie – At the start of the trailer Archie is wearing a plain white t-shirt, this shows that he is playing innocent when he is with Bella. But when the scene changes to Archie and Sambuca his clothing changes to a vivid orange which means danger is ahead.

Page 15: Question 1 Of My Evaluation

Creating Mise En Scene

Mother – In the short clip that she is in, she is wearing all black, this means she is hiding a very big secret and is hiding it from people around Hill Top Farm.

Mark – Mark is the local murderer, he also wears black throughout the trailer to indicate that he is purposely hiding his true identity and the gloves are worn to hide traces of him when killing his next local of Hill Top, this also shows that he is a wanted man.

Set is very rural as if mark is in hiding.

Set is like a normal everyday household but when she drops

the bombshell its not like every other teenagers house.

Q1.

Page 16: Question 1 Of My Evaluation

Creating Mise En Scene

Sarah– She is dressed as an every day normal teenager, but placed in a rural setting. The speech is the main importance to this clip as her friend is checking up on her as she knows she shouldn’t be in this forest because that’s where the local murderer captures his victims

Hand held camera, like Mark is spying on her from up close.

Shaken camera to build up tension

We then see mark hiding behind the tree, we know

what is going to happen next and the chorus then kicks in

Music chosen for the trailerFor our final trailer we used Set Fire To The Rain by Adele we chose this song for various reasons:

Girl meets guy, she falls really quick for the guy. He tells her all of these wonderful things, but really they were all a lie and now she is left with a broken

heart.

Meaning of the song..

Artist is currently in the

charts a lot, audience for Hill Top Farm listen to chart music and will know this song well.

It is a power ballad, and a swelling string arrangement over a mid-tempo rhythm, creating a wall of sound for the singer's mourning vocals.

The song is like Bella is telling a story about what she has gone

through and how she dealt with the pain

Audience can also relate to the song

as well as the story line in the soap, which may

draw them in even more

Music chosen for the trailerSet Fire To The Rain lyrics

I let it fall, my heart,And as it fell you rose to claim itIt was dark and I was overUntil you kissed my lips and you saved me

My hands, they're strongBut my knees were far too weakTo stand in your armsWithout falling to your feet

But there's a side to youThat I never knew, never knew. All the things you'd sayThey were never true, never true,And the games you playYou would always win, always win.

[Chorus:]But I set fire to the rain,Watched it pour as I touched your face,Well, it burned while I cried'Cause I heard it screaming out your name, your name!

Archie has to claim the baby is his

Dark and sad time for Sambuca and Archie

Bella finding Archie and Sambuca arm in arm

The beat of “arms” Bella drops her folder to cause a noise.

“But I” when Bella hits Sambuca, shows the song is how she feels

“fire” fight starts to happen

“pour” Sarah’s emotion and slow motion blink matches length of the word

“pour”
