During my research I become aware of certain conventions that music videos have. Performance based, narrative and concept based. I took inspiration for my music video as because it’s based around teenage boys in a band and explored the stereotypical themes of events that most teenagers go through such as having a crush, and having a group of people/ person that they admire or who is iconic to them which is the idea of the song. I chose performance based as the songs musical composition was dominated by the rock sound produced by the guitars and upbeat rhythm matched with the effortless sounding vocals. Immediately I had the idea of having boys aged 17/18 playing in a band in a small room rehearsing in their band and I wanted it to cross between that and a narrative based theme going on. This is when I brainstormed the ideas of things teenagers go through so I came up with the idea of exploring relationships and friendships.

After going through a few ideas of ideal settings to shoot the scenes at I went from choosing people’s houses, to the idea of shooting at a park and eventually changed it to the idea of the street outside school as it was quickest access and quietist road which was important as it made it easier to film. The issues I had with other settings was that it wasn’t realistic to shoot as people weren’t able to turn up at same time for the park or going to the house and because it was winter it was too wet and cold to shoot in the park so coming up with the idea of shooting on the street instead was more convenient as it was quick and easy and still produced a clear scene.I learnt that real music genre conventions in my video had to be based around the song itself which was pop combined with rock. Conventions of this genre were easy to adapt to as it’s a popular genre of music that my target audience were also into. The lyrics of the video explored most of the narratives and the actual music video by The Vaccines. I also analysed videos of the same genre such as “You and me” by One Night Only which is where I took most my inspiration; such as the idea of using monochrome to explore the rock theme and the crossing of performance based and mostly the narrative of the boy seeing the girls on the street.

This made it appropriate for the genre as it’s popular for teenagers to experience or be able to relate to the music video. “Monkey Wrench” by the Foo Fighters was another example of a video which I analysed which immediately influenced my ideas, for example the use of the fish eye lens made it appropriate to the genre as it created this entertaining point of view and looked different to the narrative based scenes which is another way the audience would want to watch it as it’s a way of escape. My audience being teenager was important to explore the genre further in all three of my products the video, digipack and advert so I maintained my rock colour scheme on all three of red white and black, I also used this on my blog. I used the same font for the titles and similar fonts for other text which were all simple and clear to read for teenagers in mind.
