2 Writing practices, processes and resources Shaping multimodal textsStudy the photograph and read the passage that follows.

Tens of thousands of refugees, fleeing war and genocide, moved like a human river across Kosovo’s borders into Macedonia and Albania. They frequently were stripped of their valuables, and had their documents burned and their identity papers destroyed before they were allowed to leave their homeland. Across the borders, refugee camps awaited them. Families were separated, food was in short supply and shelter was scant. The human misery was made worse by the spring thaw and the muddy terrain that accompanied it. But still they came, day after day, to escape the genocidal violence that ravaged Kosovo. The Washington Post sent two photographers to the refugee camps, Carol Guzy and Lucian Perkins, and a short time later added Michael Williamson. All were seasoned photojournalists who had worked difficult assignments before. All were previous Pulitzer Prize winners.

‘We wanted to tell the refugee story in a way that went beyond the mechanics of regular coverage,’ Perkins says. ‘Our goal was to follow individuals closely, to explore avenues of the story that were offbeat and at the same time photogenic.’Perkins arrived in Skopje not far from the camps, and Guzy headed for refugee settlements near Kukes. Though only 25 miles apart, the condition of the roads and the immense crowds made contact between them a two- or three-day trip. Each photographer worked alone in covering the story.

At one point Guzy watched a family reunion. Some refugees were inside the camp as members of their family arrived from Kosovo. They met on either side of the fence and, in their joyful reunion, passed babies back and forth through the barbed wire.
