Motor skills

A motor skill involves

a muscular movement to

complete a predetermined

task.

Skill acquisition is a sub-discipline of the exercise and sport sciences. It

is primarily concerned with acquiring, developing and enhancing skilled

performance. A number of theories have been developed to explain the

different stages of learning and the ways in which movements are learnt. This

knowledge has applications for teachers, athletes and coaches in developing

the appropriate structure to enhance the learning environment.

What is a motor skill?

A motor or movement skill is an activity that involves voluntary muscular

movement with the correct degree of muscular control, to complete a

reasonably complex predetermined task. Just how well the skill is completed

will depend on a number of factors such as how often the movement has

been practiced, how much is learnt through that practice, and how well that

learning is applied to make the movement more effi cient.

Examples of motor skill include:

catching a cricket ball

performing a handstand

running a race

goal shooting in netball.

Compare the complexity of throwing a ball at a target with your right arm

and throwing with your left. If you are right handed, you will have practiced

this movement many times and the result is a smooth coordinated movement.

When you compare this with the throwing action of your left hand, you begin

to realise that a seemingly effortless motor skill such as throwing requires

practice and learning before it becomes profi cient.

Characteristics of

skilled performers

Skilled performers have a highly developed capacity for information processing,

which allows them to exhibit some of the following characteristics. They:

anticipate their opponents

perform consistently
