2. BOOKS - USING THE LIBRARY CATALOGUE (QCAT) Screen capture of the QCAT Catalogue tab on the library homepage

Search the library catalogue (QCAT) to find materials (such as books, videos, journals, maps, newspapers and government documents) available, in print and online, at Queen’s University Library. • Search by Author: last name first name • Search by Title: omit initial articles (the, a, an, le, la…) • Search by Journal (Periodical) Title: eg Progress in Human Geography • Search by Keyword (“and” is automatically placed between words) Search by Keyword Boolean: To narrow the scope of your search you can join together your search terms with “Boolean operators.” Boolean operators are used to indicate the relationship(s) between words/concepts. They are: [and, or, not, “a phrase”]. In addition, there are special characters (such as “?” for truncating) that allow you to perform more sophisticated searches.

Example: Search for KW “James Bay” and “Hydroelectric” and “Cree”

Once you have found one book that looks right on topic, it is good strategy to use the subject headings that have been used to describe that book to locate more books on the same (or closely related) topic. Title: Social and environmental impacts of the James Bay Hydroelectric Project [electronic resource]

Subjects:James Bay Hydroelectric Project. Hydroelectric power plants--Environmental aspects--James Bay Region. Hydroelectric power plants--Social aspects--James Bay Region. Cree Indians--James Bay Region--Social conditions. Environmental impact analysis--James Bay Region. James Bay Region--Social conditions.

3. SCHOLARLY JOURNAL ARTICLES START WITH A MULTI-DISCIPLINARY DATABASE, SUCH AS: Google Scholar A good starting point…but never search only Google Scholar for journal articles. Also try: Academic Search Complete Indexes more than 10,900 publications including peer‐reviewed journals, popular magazines, conference proceedings, monographs and reports. Summon A Library search engine that lets you search for many Library materials ‐‐ books, journal articles, newspaper articles and more ‐‐ from one search box. Once you have search results use the facets on the left‐hand menu bar to narrow your search results: Scholarly articles; Full‐text online; Content type; Subject terms; Date.

Screen capture of the Summon search box on the library homepage http://library.queensu.ca/summon AND THEN, MOVE ON TO A DISCIPLINE SPECIFIC DATABASE: Here are four suggestions, but if your research is in a more specific area like Environment, Health, Social topics, etc. you might want to consult the subject guide for a database relevant to that discipline. A few examples: GEOBASE A comprehensive, international and interdisciplinary database for the fields of physical and human geography, including geology, ecology, geomechanics, mineralogy, oceanography, environmental issues and Third World studies.... PAIS Comprehensive, international index to the literature of public and social policy, and to the social sciences in general. Covers journal articles (scholarly and popular), books, government documents (emphasis on Canada, USA, UN), statistical compilations, committee reports (private and public), and directories. Bibliography of Native North Americans Covers all aspects of native North American culture, history and life. America, History and Life History of the United States and Canada from pre‐historic times to the present. Indexes journals, books and dissertations on history, culture, government and political science, ethnic studies, folklore, international relations and current affairs.
