Fr. Edward Mikolajczyk Pastor

1998—2018 With Gratitude—

for Your Faithful and Loving Service to the People of Queen of Martyrs

It seems appropriate for me to celebrate my Retirement Mass on the Solemnity of the Birth of John the Baptist. John was chosen to be the forerunner of Jesus to prepare a people fit for the Lord. He was a man of integrity and truth. He was a leader recognized by the people who was not afraid to speak his mind. He executed his role perfectly as he gave witness and testimony to the Lord even to the point of death. Throughout the course of his life, he has remained an inspiration to many. As I reflect on my 45 years of ministry and 20 years as

Pastor, I am humbled by the blessings the Lord has given me. Like John, I heard the call of the Lord early in my life. My family was supportive in my journey to look at priesthood. Although there were challenges along the way, I was able to fulfill my dream when I was ordained on May 9, 1973. From that moment, it has been a wonderful and exciting journey for me. It is difficult for me to believe that it is now time to enter a new phase of my life. I owe most of my gratitude and appreciation to my parents, Norbert and Bernice, who encouraged me to never give up. The support of my two brothers, Michael and Donald, were also important to me. My aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephew, my friends and parishioners gave me the incentive to do my best. I was blest not only to be a parish priest, but also had the opportunity to teach in the Seminary, an experience that I will always hold close to my heart. The students I taught and the people I served in my various assignments helped me to be the priest that I am. When I came to Queen of Martyrs, I wasn’t sure what God had planned for me. Here I am 20 years later, reaping the rewards of my labor. The 20 years have gone by quickly. I am grateful for all the love and support you have given me. We had our ups and downs, successes and failures and we have survived. If there is anything I said or did to cause hurt feelings, I ask for your forgiveness. For me the positive outweighs the negative. You have been an inspiration to me. You have given me the stamina and energy to live out my ministry. My greatest joy came in working with the Rectory and School Staff. Many people don’t realize the treasure that exists in the teachers who teach. They are a wonderful group of men and women who want nothing but the best for your children. The joy I had was having the opportunity to greet them every morning seeing the smiles on their faces as they walked or ran through the front door. Having the opportunity to mentor the associates who served with me was challenging and rewarding. I hope that I was able to share my priesthood with them and help them understand the importance in being a pastor. I continue to pray for Fr. Doyle, Fr. Simonetti, Fr. Highland, Fr. Beltran, Fr. Panthananickal, Fr. McCray, and Fr. Kituli. I am indebted to the one who helped form me as pastor, Fr. William Murphy. He always has a special place in my heart. I am grateful to my favorite Deacon Bob Landuyt for keeping me honest. Finally, I am grateful to all of you, the parishioners of Queen of Martyrs, who have been there for me. You have helped me to understand the meaning of “Martyrs Pride” and what it means to be a Wildcat. I leave you in good hands with Fr. Marty Marren who succeeds me as pastor. May his time here be as rewarding as mine has been. I ask you to pray for me as I begin my retirement. Like John the Baptist, I must decrease while the work and ministry of Queen of Martyrs increases. I am grateful for the time I had to be your pastor. I look forward to the future and to what lies ahead. Know that you will always hold a special place in my heart. Thanks for helping me to fulfill my priesthood and helping me to make it the rewarding memorable experience it has been. Know that you are always welcome to visit me at Our Lady of the Woods. My address is: Fr. Edward Mikolajczyk, 10731 W. 131st. Street, Orland Park, IL 60462, Ph: 708-361-4754.

Have a good week.

God Bless,

“John the Baptist was the forerunner, the ‘voice’ sent to proclaim the Incarnate Word. Thus, commemorating his birth actually means celebrating Christ, the fulfillment of the promises of all the prophets, among whom the greatest was the Baptist, called to prepare the way for the Messiah.” (Pope Benedict XVI) The hand of God guided John to his ministry. How will God’s hand guide you this week?

The members of Parish Outreach would like to wish Father Ed many well-deserved years of retirement as he begins this new chapter of his life. We would also like to thank him for his guidance and assistance over the years. Good luck, Father Ed - you will truly be missed!

“You, child, will be called prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare

his way.” (Lk 1:76)

John spent his youth leading a hermit’s life in the desert, until he was thirty years old. Far from the turmoil of the world, he served God with prayer, fasting and contemplation, and grew daily in grace and virtue. Great fortitude was required to lead such a severe and self-denying life for so many years. Would you be willing to sacrifice one hour each week, outside of Holy Mass, in Eucharistic Adoration to be “strengthened in spirit” like John the Baptist? Sign up at the Adoration Chapel or call Marion, at 708-424-8433, for more information.

Queen of Martyrs School Bids “Farewell” to Father Ed

How do we say goodbye to one of our constant supporters? It is certainly hard to do so but we wish Father Ed the best of luck in his new assignment. We want to thank him for all that he has done for Queen of Martyrs School and Parish. His hard work and dedication has not gone unnoticed! We will miss his presence at so many of our events, including our prayer services, celebrating Sacraments, speaking about vocations, opening our special occasions with prayers and encouragement, playing in our Student/Staff volleyball game and officiating our end of year water baloon toss. Most of all we will miss his friendly smile each morning as he greeted our students as they came to school! There are countless wonderful memories to recall. We are so grateful to Father Ed for making Queen of Martyrs School and Parish a solid place committed to faith and family. We will continue to carry on his tradition of being “Martyrs Strong!” We want to remind Father Ed of our saying “Once a Wildcat, Always a Wildcat!” We wish him a wonderful retirement! We end with this final thought “A heart is not judged by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others!” We will miss you Father Ed, we have been blessed by your presence!
