SCHOOL PROFILE General Information Queen Elizabeth II Primary School is located on the outskirts of Pomeroy village, approximately 10 miles from both Cookstown and Dungannon. It was opened in 1978 to service Pomeroy and the surrounding areas and caters mainly for children from a rural background. The pupils enjoy a friendly family school where individual children have a close relationship with staff and their personal and individual needs are supported. Academic standards are high and the staff are constantly updating their curriculum planning and teaching. Hard work and learning go hand in hand with respect, courtesy and kindness for each other.

The building is of modern design with all the facilities one would expect. Classrooms are linked to C2K computer systems, each has an interactive whiteboard, and lead on to a central library. The infant classroom has en-suite toilet facilities; an enclosed tarred outdoor play area and a mobile classroom set up specifically for structured play activities. A further mobile classroom is fully furnished with a well-resourced art area for all creative activities during or after school. This mobile is also used for all cross curricular visits, Extended schools activities and for special needs support. Outside, there are extensive playgrounds with an outdoor soft play area fully equipped with climbing frames, a grass soccer pitch, environmental pond area and bordering shrubs, giving the site a pleasant appearance. The most recent school inspection by the Education Training Inspectorate verified the school’s ability to provide an excellent standard of education for all pupils. The report concluded ‘In the areas inspected, the quality of education provided by this school is very good. The school is meeting very effectively the educational and pastoral needs of the children and has demonstrated its capacity for sustained self-improvement.’

School Aims & Values The school aims to implement the Northern Ireland Curriculum, so that all pupils: -

Become articulate, literate and numerate.

Acquire knowledge, skills and practical abilities in language, maths and science, which they can apply positively in everyday life.

Develop a reasoned set of attitudes, values and Christian beliefs.

Develop healthy and fit bodies.

Develop a sense of respect for themselves and the environment through scientific, historical, geographical and religious enquiry.

Understand and respect the multicultural nature of society.

Develop lively, inquiring, imaginative and creative minds through practical, creative, artistic and physical skills.

Become independent, disciplined learners who are able to make informed choices and decisions using all the resources available to them.

Ethos

Queen Elizabeth II Primary School believes in promoting the personal development and aspirations of each child to achieve their full potential, in a safe, caring and supportive, small school setting. This ethos is based on Christian values while promoting the intellectual, moral, emotional and spiritual development of each child.

Staffing This is a two teacher school with thirty seven pupils, currently a P1-4 class and a P5-7 class. There is also a principal release teacher employed for 2 days/wk. Governors are presently in the process of employing a further teacher to take P1/2 pupils next year, to split up the multi-composite P1-4 grouping this year. There are two classroom assistants, a secretary, building supervisor, catering assistant and two lunchtime supervisors. Class Organisation

At present the children are organised in composite classes, where every effort is made to ensure that the children receive the best possible education. The particular skills of teachers, however, are exploited in late afternoon classes where teachers adopt a semi-specialist role in such subjects as Art, Drama, Music and Physical Education.

Parent Teacher Association

Queen Elizabeth II Primary School has an active P.T.A., which works throughout the school year organising a wide variety of events and raising significant sums of money for the benefit of our school and pupils e.g. reading resources. They also volunteer their services to maintain the school building e.g. painting, gardening, etc.

Eco Schools

The school has an Eco Council and already has gained a bronze and a silver certificate in developing an Eco friendly school. Children meet and draw up action plans to improve the effective and economical running of the school and contribute to improving the local environment. So far the children have been planting native trees and shrubs around the school. The Eco group are currently working to gain the top Eco Schools award – a green flag.

Extra Curricular Activities

Our school has always provided after school clubs for the pupils, giving them a choice of a sporting activity or an arts and craft activity in a more informal setting. The Extended Schools clubs now replace most of the previous after school clubs and consequently, parents do not have to pay for the majority of coaching or expert tuition given. A number of sporting activities are provided for children in the Key Stage 2 classes. Staff and qualified coaches give the children the opportunity to participate and compete in these activities during and after school hours. During the year pupils are able to take part in Soccer, Team Ball Games, Swimming, Netball, and Hockey. Educational Visits Educational visits take place on a regular basis. School visits for individual classes involves children visiting places of interest connected to their World Around Us topics e.g. museum, National Trust property, etc. The whole school also enjoy a Christmas visit to the Opera House in Belfast or Armagh Theatre, to see a pantomime. A whole school summer outing takes place in Term 3.

The present principal teaches P5, 6 & 7 for 3 days each week. The other 2 days are

office/administration days.

The key responsibilities of the current Principal include:

Designated Child Protection officer
