Said Paul Ryans Budget Included Common-Sense Entitlement Reforms for Medicare and

    Medicaid

In April 2011, Quayle said he supported Paul Ryans budget proposal because it included common-senseentitlement reforms for Medicare and Medicaid.

He said Chairman Ryans plan delivers something that has been unacceptably scarce in Washington foryears: leadership. Without question, Chairman Ryan deserves significant credit for offering such a boldplan, however, simply telling the American public the truth shouldnt be considered such an unusual step.

Pledged enactment of commonsense entitlement reform. In addition to the $100 billion in cutsRepublicans have offered over the next year, we have also made clear that our upcoming budget willinclude serious, commonsense entitlement reforms. [Quayle Floor Remarks, 3/1/11]

Was Pressed at a Town Hall on His Vote to Cut Senior Benefits Rather Than Cut Oil Subsidies

During his town hall in 2011, Quayle was asked by a constituent about why he voted to cut services forthe elderly, while supports tax cuts for oil companies. He said the tax deductions were not specific to theoil industry.

The constituent asked, Id like to know why youd want to do this on the backs of seniors, and ofwomen. All thecuts are going to hurt seniors, future seniors, and women!...And why are you arechoosing that way rather than cutting oil subsidies Quayle said, Now, the things theyre talking aboutwere actually tax deductions that corporations across all sorts of sectors take in terms of R&D, in terms ofequipment deductions, over the life of the equipment, those are the deductions that they are talking aboutand its not specific to the oil industry... Opposed Environmental Regulations That Hinder American-Mexican Border Security

In June 2011, The Arizona Republic reported that Quayle blamed a lack of border security on the

environmental regulations. Environmentalists countered that anti-environmental lawmakers wanted tocreate solutions for non-existent problems. Quayles bill would give the U.S. Customs and Border

Protection access to federal lands for security activities. Quayle said The different trails that drug

smugglers and human smugglers use change depending on where Border Patrol agents are stationed . . .

Our agents need to have the ability to move quickly. But sometimes its taking as much as four months to

get them through all the hoops. Quayle continued, The environmental damage that is currently

occurring from drug smugglers and human smugglers will vastly outweigh any damages by the Border

Patrol . . . The Border Patrol will have much better sense and take much better care of the area. [ArizonaRepublic, 6/13/11]

Opposed Expansion of Clean Water Act

In 2011, Gosar signed on to a letter sent to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the ArmyCorps of Engineers to oppose expansions of the Clean Water Act.

Gosar said This is just another example of the Environmental Protection Agencys attempt to circumventCongress and develop rules and regulations that far exceed the authority granted to the agency underexisting public law, said Gosar. In addition, these rules and regulations are being developed withouttransparency and with little consideration for the negative impacts they may impose on our localeconomies. [Rep. Said Both Medicare and Social Security Could Not be Maintained by Next Generation

In 2011, Quayle defended the proposal by Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan to change Medicare to a vouchersystem. He said, We should give seniors the option to choose their health plan. He also felt that thenumber of now-retiring Baby Boomers could bankrupt both Medicare and Social Security. The nextgeneration cannot afford to maintain them, he said. [Arizona Republic, 5/19/11]

Headline: Anthem Audience Challenges Quayle During Presentation on Medicare

In 2011, at a town hall Quayle presented the Republican budget to his constituents. Members of theaudience had signs that read Hands off our Medicare. The Arizona Republic reported Part of the GOP budget proposes to privatize Medicare for Americans under age 55. Quayle claimed thatthe proposal was not a voucher program.

The seniors can then choose which policy best fits their need and then the federal government willdirectly fund for that insurance policy. . . . Now, it is also weighted, Quayle said. So those who areolder and are more sick get more health, and those who are younger and less sick, they get less subsidy. So it equals out. [Arizona Republic,5/19/11]

Defended His Position to End Medicare as We Know It

Quayle was asked And youve taken some heat of course about your Medicare decisionyour plan is togive seniors vouchers to buy health insurance on the private market.

Quayle said, Its not a voucher system. What the system that we proposed is something that will notaffect those who are in or near retirement. But for those who are younger we would actually put apremium support system, which is very similar to what members of Congress, if they take part of thefederal health care program. And so this would allow those seniors down the line who are 55 now andyounger to actually look in the private market place where wed have an exchange and see what policywould be best for them and then the federal government would actually subsidize it and pay directly tothose private sector insurance companies. I think it is a great way to start to keep our costs going down. Ifwe do nothing than our Medicare will be bankrupt and that is the biggest catastrophe that could happen.[ABC 15 Interview, Accessed 5/17/11]
