A Greenhouse Gas (GHG) footprint is a measure of the GHG

emissions that an individual or company emits from his / its

business as-usual operation or activity. These emissions often

transpire from activities that require combustion of fuel and

electricity as well as use of paper.

"The Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) is the most widely used international accounting tool for government and business leaders to understand, quantify, and manage greenhouse gas emissions. The GHG Protocol, a decade-long partnership between the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, is working with businesses, governments, and environmental groups around the world to build a new generation of credible and effective programs for tackling climate change.

THE EQUATOR PRINCIPLES

The Equator Principles is a risk management framework, adopted by financial institutions, for determining, assessing and managing environmental and social risk in projects.

Currently 81 Equator Principles Financial Institutions (EPFIs) in 36 countries have officially adopted the EPs, covering over 70 percent of international Project Finance debt in emerging markets

Nigeria has signed to this principle and developed the Nigerian Sustainable Banking Principles.

Principle 1) Our Business Activities: Environmental and Social Risk Management We will integrate environmental and social considerations into decision-making processes relating to our Business Activities to avoid, minimize or offset negative impacts

Principle 2) Our Business Operations: Environmental and Social FootprintWe will avoid, minimize or offset the negative impact of our Business Operations on the environment and local communities in which we operate and, where possible, promote positive impacts

The Case for a Carbon Tax• A carbon tax would raise the price of fossil fuels, with more taxes collected

on fuels that generate more emissions, like coal. This tax would reduce demand for high-carbon emission fuels and increase demand for lower-emission fuels like natural gas. Renewable sources like solar, wind, nuclear and hydroelectric would face lower taxes or no taxes. To be effective, the tax should also be applied to imported goods from countries that do not assess a similar levy on the use of fossil fuels.

• Around 1.1 billion people worldwide—roughly the population of India— still live without access to electricity with most concentrated in Africa and Asia. Another 2.9 billion rely on wood or other biomass for cooking and heating, resulting in indoor and outdoor air pollution attributable for 4.3 million deaths each year.

• Energy is fundamental to economic growth and environmental sustainability. Access to affordable, reliable and sustainable energy is vital to ending extreme poverty and promoting shared prosperity
