This scientific activity began with early man studying the night sky and trying to sort out what the stars were and devising patterns that we now know as constellations in order to remember what the night sky looked like. Over the ensuing centuries, we have applied a variety of instruments of continually improving precision to the measurement to the study of what we now call the Universe. The purpose remains to determine what it is, how it was created, and how it works. We, as quality practitioners, know the need for quality assurance, calibration control, training, and other quality processes to assure that the measurements obtained meet the scientific requirements for correct results. In this presentation, Barry will give a brief introduction to astronomy and our Universe, Lockwood Park Observatory (LPO) and its functions, and an example of how quality is important to the science. He will show how the use of a simple, optical test invented in 1858 could have prevented a major embarrassment associated with the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope. We will conclude with plenty of time for questions and, if we have clear skies, observing with the LPO ten inch Astro Physics refracting telescope. We will also observe constellations with our unaided eyes! Section 1205 at Discover EngineeringOn February 25th Barry Beaman and Diane Konopa attended representing ASQ Section 1205 at the Discover Engineering event at the Discovery Center Museum.

Ann Marie Walker, the Director or Marketing sent a personal thank you to Barry and Diane stating that everyone at the Discovery Center Museum truly appreciated the time they gave to help interest kids about engineering!

The event set a new record of 1,357 visitors that day. Section 1205 was one of 20 companies and engineering societies that participated in the event. There were also four high school robotics teams and one junior robotics team that participated and approximately 20 students from their robotics teams demonstrated the robots and let children take turns at the controls

Diane and Barry were two of the approximately 85 professionals that volunteered.

Many of the companies or societies that attended offered multiple activities for children to do and demos to witness, so there were things to engage everyone from preschoolers through grandparents. Countless visitors told Discovery Center Museum staff how fun the day was and how thankful they were to have this day for their kids.

In addition to exciting children about the world of engineering, the day also provided adults with a glimpse at many companies and engineering societies they may have heard of, but didn't really know what they produced or represented.

Barry and Diane along with ASQ Section 1205 are happy to help foster awareness of the many important things our local companies and engineering societies do to improve the world around us!
