s the mission of Brethren Christian critical? Is the planet facing a spiritual struggle that transcends national boundaries, ethnic backgrounds and religious traditions?

Are we in desperate need of light for these dark times? Then yes, the mission is critical!

The school has always nurtured students toward the vision Paul had for believers in Philppians 2 “. . . that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God, without blemish, in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the

world, holding fast to the word of life . . .”And that light has been burning brightly for more than 65 years. Graduates currently serve

Jesus Christ all over the planet, in the world of politics, the NFL and in professional and other positions of influence spanning the globe.

Current students are busting the curve on the College Board SAT exams and Advanced Placement tests.

Those same millennial BC students are winning a staggering array of fine arts awards including a “Sparky” from the OC Arts Council for sustained excellence and the “Childress” award for the best high school play in Orange County, bar none!

Our boys’ varsity basketball squad will try to capture the league title for the sixth consecu-tive year, and our all-star gridiron coaching staff (who has appeared in a total of six Super Bowls) will try to lead our team to the playoffs for the third consecutive year.

These achievements are signs that BC students are fulfilling their mission. They are learn-ing to think critically about the world around them. Their work ethic is obvious.

Most importantly they have an accurate and thorough understanding of God’s Word, and a loving, obedient personal relationship with Him. They are brightening our planet with His light where ever they go.

Help us “keep the light on” by making a generous donation to BC’s general or scholarship fund. The school operates on a positive, but razor-thin margin each year.

In other words, your gift makes a BIG difference. Seriously, the world needs this light!

From a young age, Stephen Keenan felt that his future involved mission work.

His plan was to go to El Salvador and work with an organization that helps needy families whose children are at risk of being placed in orphanages.

During his five years at Brethren Chris-tian, Stephen served in various ministries in Mexico, Bosnia, Rwanda and El Salvador, further affirming that this was the path God chose for him.

The plan was to spend nine to 10 months in El Salvador and then decide whether to return to the U.S. and attend college, or stay in El Salvador and continue with his mission work.

With his plan in place, and the majority of his funding earned, Stephen was ready to leave for El Salvador.

This is when the Lord revealed a new direction for Stephen.

On July 2, Stephen and several Brethren buddies went hiking in Eaton Canyon in the San Gabriel Mountains. They hiked up to the top of a waterfall, climbing over rocks to view a stream and water below. It was a hot day so they decided to take a dip, jumping about 15 feet into the pool of water.

“It seemed safe to me, and the other guys who had jumped first looked to be OK,” Stephen said.

So he took the leap, landing on a rock in the shallow water.

As soon as he landed, Stephen knew something was wrong. He felt tremendous pain and could not stand by himself. Eventu-ally he was able to gather the strength to get up with the help of his friends and hike more than two hours back to the car and drive home.

“I thought if I could get home, things would feel better the next day,” he said

But when he didn’t feel any better as he’d hoped, he and his mom Stephanie sought medical attention. The doctor determined that he had broken several vertebrae in his lower back. Stephen underwent surgery to place rods into his spinal canal to stabilize the spinal column. The surgery was success-

When we started writing this article about Stephen Keenan for Brethren Magazine, he was days away from heading to El Salvador to work with at-risk youth. An accident redirected his course back home to helping kids in Orange County ... at least for now.

Sometimes God reveals direction by ‘accident.’

ful and, amazingly, he sustained no nerve damage.

Stephen’s doctor was quoted in a local newspaper as saying, “He’s the luckiest patient I have treated in my 25-year career. Had he jumped from just a few feet higher, he could have been permanently paralyzed from the waist down.”

Stephen added, “This is not luck, but something that is a part of God’s plan for me and my future.”

Stephen has spent the summer in a body brace, unable to bend, twist or lift objects. He is healing well, according to his surgeon, and sometime next year the rods and screws will be removed from his back.

He hopes to be able to return to El Salvador. Until that time, he plans to attend a local community college and work with at-risk kids in Orange County.

Stephen was raised by his mom in a godly home with extended family involved in his life as well. His grandparents actively encouraged his spiritual growth, including the provision of a Christian education. He said he is grateful for the spiritual instruction and the examples of caring for the poor and disenfranchised that he has received from each of his family members.

He says he looks forward to serving oth-ers for the sake of the gospel wherever God would have him go.

y day, Brethren Christian senior Quinton Fults focuses on

rigorous advanced placement calculus and English classes.

By night, Quinton grabs his banjo and washboard and, along with his band, can be found at such venues as the Signal Hill Soup Jam, the Long Beach Bluegrass Jam or maybe the Alta Coffee Shop in Newport Beach.

Meet Quinto and the Beans, which Quinton refers to as a “new grass band.”

“We combine styles of bluegrass, rockabilly, rap and alternative music,” Quinton said.

Quinton plays the banjo, the washboard and the harmonica and is the lead vocalist for the group, which also features a guitar, upright bass, another vocalist and a band manager who sets up the sound system and comes in for about half the songs during any gig.

Quinton said he took banjo lessons from Andy Rau of the Andy Rau band, “but it changed from him teaching me to us just playing music together. I picked things up within an hour.”

The group Quinto and the Beans practices whenever the members can get together, often meeting at Quinton’s family’s home in Fountain Valley.

Quinton is one of five worship leaders at Mariners Church in Irvine.

“I’m in charge every five weeks and I lead worship in the high school ministry,” he said.

Quinto attended St. Hedwig School in Los Alamitos before the family discovered Brethren Christian.

“Brethren came as a surprise to us,” Quinton’s mom Christine said. “My best friend’s son was a year older than Quinton and looking for a high school. So I drove over there and looked at the campus, looked at their website, and I said, ‘I have a feeling this where God wants Quinton to go to high school.’ It’s a Christian school and I like the small classroom size.”

Quinton is active in the school’s drama department. He assembled a band that performed the opening, closing and intermission music for the school’s presentation of “Steel Magnolias.” He’s portrayed Joseph, the superintendent of angels, in Brethren’s “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

“The drama department is my passion outside of academics,” Quinton said. Add his musical interests and “it’s a challenge to balance all three,” he said.

“Like most people, we hope for the best and tried to raise him with values,” Quinton’s dad, Craig, said. “What has been important to us is raising him in the church and having a strong faith and stressing creativity.

“We’re very proud of him,” Craig Fults added. “Watching that talent come out of him is just a fascinating experience. I can’t even carry a tune.”

Quinton says he is interested in attending either USC, UCLA or UC Irvine after graduation, and he hopes to study computer engineering.

“Drama and music—they’re hobbies. “I’ll try out for plays at my college and I’ll continue to finesse my technique,” he said.

QUINTON FULTS and an Eagle project

Quinton is a member of Boy Scouts Troop 671, based at St. Hedwig School in Los Alamitos. He is working on his Eagle project.

Quinton produced a “family-friendly charitable variety show that included a magician, a comedy improv team, a rock band, and other acts to benefit Working Wardrobes of Costa Mesa,” Quinton said.

The show was Sept. 27 at Mariners Church Student Center in Irvine. The ticket for admission to the show was one pair of gently worn men’s or women’s dress shoes for the benefit of Working Wardrobe’s mission.

eryl Dyson is up for the challenge.

Dyson, who spent the last four years coaching cross country at Fountain Valley

High School, is the new walk-on head cross country coach at Brethren Christian High School.

Why leave Fountain Valley?“The program had probably gotten better than I was as a

coach,” said Dyson, who was also a walk-on coach at Fountain Valley. “I had two really good assistants who could be coaches on their own.”

By day, Dyson is an accountant with an Irvine CPA

firm. He noticed Brethren Christian had an opening for a cross country coach on the CIF website, which lists open positions.

“I knew all along that to continue coaching I’d have to be somewhere close to home,” he said.

Brethren Christian fit the bill.“I like being at a small school.

It’s fun not being at a large public school with 3,600 kids,” Dyson said. “The kids are great and the parents have been very supportive.”

While coaching at Fountain Valley, Dyson led the Barons to the Sunset League championship in 2011 and 2012. Fountain Valley advanced to the CIF Division I Prelims three times and the CIF Finals in 2011.

At Brethren Christian, Dyson has 11 runners —six girls and five boys.

“It’s fun getting to know them. It’s a small group and they’re out there whenever they can. I don’t think there’s a kid at Brethren who’s only involved in just one activity. I try to be very accommodating.”

Deryl and his wife Patsy have two grown children—daughter Emily who now lives in New York; and son Eric, a Fountain Valley High grad who ran cross country all four years.

Deryl’s ready for the challenge at Brethren Christian.

“It’s a great school. Hopefully over a period of 3-4 years we can build a cross country team that can compete,” he said.

Dyson added, ”I know there are more kids on campus that can run. I just have to find them.”

responsible for planning its own reunion. Brethren Christian High School does

its very best to maintain current contact information on alumni, and we are happy to share your current class list to assist you in your planning (and we appreciate your help).

Reunions may be held at Brethren Christian’s Huntington Beach campus.

If the Alumni Office can assist you in any way, please contact Janine Ransom at [email protected] or (714) 962-6617, ext. 25.

1960s Liz Ann Pearson (’64) writes to Brethren:

“I work for a company called Esri, which is headquartered in Redlands, CA, as an administrative assistant. I graduated from Mankato State University, MN, with a degree in elementary education. I worked 14 years as a Realtor in Colorado before moving back to Minnesota. I have been married to Lane Pearson for 45 years ... 46 this year! We have three grown daughters and 10 grandchildren.”

1970sEvonne Cashman (‘75) credits a snorkel

and mask with saving her life in a July 31 attack by a 14-foot tiger shark as she snorkeled in Maui. Her brother, Ed Cashman (’71), chairman of the Bible department at BCHS, says “the shark had his entire mouth around her.”

Von sustained an 18-inch bite on her back and numerous cuts, requiring stitches on her hands and face. She said she “felt like she had been hit by a Mack truck,” because the impact was so great. “I never felt I was going to die, I was alert the whole time,” Von said. “I was very fortunate.”

She says she is not afraid to return to the water and plans to snorkel again. Von’s story was featured on TV and print news reports around the world.

When Deacon was born, the cord was wrapped around his neck three times and tied in a knot. The doctors did an emer-gency C-section at 30-weeks. Mom, dad and grandparents, Dave and Joyce Coley, wish to thank all of you who prayed Deacon into this world.

Jeremy Niswonger (‘98) and Shana Niswonger have been blessed with a little girl, Eliyanah Grace. She was born on Aug. 20; weighed 8 pounds 8 ounces;

and measured 18½ inches long. Eliyanah means “God has answered me”

in Hebrew. BCHS principal and junior high teacher (respectively), Rick and Janet Niswonger, are the doting grandparents.
